Title: Advice on a bat crack, please
Post by: rickjames on September 25, 2016, 06:08:24 PM
My B3 took this today on a nothing cut shot.

I'm no expert hence asking but is there anything I can do? Bat was knocked in properly and all that stuff. I've sent Streaky an email but if I was being honest I'm not holding out for much.

Looks like either a shake crack where the handle has been put in too tight causing a compression crack that has then spread and exploded with use or storm damage to me, or a mixture of both, dependent on how old the bat is you should be able to get a replacement

Bought it in January as part of B3s 50% jig.

I would agree it looks like the Handel was tight and the bat broke at the weakest point

I would speake to b3 as its under a year old and if the handle has been put it in to tight they might even replace it

I'll just wait and see what they say, I'm just glad the season is over with so I can't get super sad over it.

How will they know it's a B3 though? There aren't any stickers to confirm what brand it is...

Very, very, good point, Cameron.

Handle could be too tight as others have said
Also worth looking at the back half of the bat and look closely for fine horizontal lines going across the grain

This happened to my h4l except it went in two.

Pics look too big in my browser to hard to see the crack in relation to rest of the bat.

I thought their pressing precludes such edge cracks and breaks.

Yeah it's just a small edge crack, will sand out 🙊😂😂😂

If its had a full seasons use, seems a tad harsh to expect a replacement

^ Maybe it is a blessing in disguise - time for a better bat.

Think I've been at the crease 7/8 times this season, so not much

So if you bought a new car that had a year long warranty, and it broke down after 364 days with 12,000 miles added since you'd picked it up, I take it you wouldn't take advantage of the warranty as it would be "a tad harsh"?

Even if you can't see the pics well, the other replies should give you more than a hint that he's not talking edge cracks.

Firstly the bats had it a pic  of the face should  help identify storm  damage also the damage without a pic of the vee  and shoulders can't really tell if it's  over tight handle damage  but  the damage  is a little low for an over tight handle maybe the blade was lacking in moisture.

Little low for a handle being too tight when it's cracked right at the bottom of the V where the handle is 😂😂

B3/Streaky looked after me well when I had a bat go right in half after a similar amount of time/use, I'm sure they'll give you a fair response! Always gutting when a bat lets go like that though, commiserations pal.

Actually, one of the visible pictures had a red ball mark on edge hence the "edge crack".

Wasnt aware of warranty on bats. My bad. And using a bat 7/8 times is different to a whole season.

dude why post here when you haven't even given them enough time to reply?? looks like a defect (either in the willow, or with the handling etc), but again, I strongly disagree with posting here - not fair to the bat maker.

I don't see the problem; I've asked a forum full of knowledgeable people for some advice/opinions on a bat and whether it can be fixed or not. If I had said something completely stupid and uncalled for about the batmaker then you'd be right. But I haven't.

@rickjames isn't slagging off B3. He is just asking if there is any life left in his beloved B3. I am sure he will email Streaky and ask if there is anything can be done their end. I don't see anything wrong with this topic.

Nice work you pitchfork-wavers!!!!  He's not slagging B3 off at all, simply asking for opinions on the damage whilst he waits for a response.

Lot of caped crusaders on here who don't read properly :)

Asking for an opinion isn't that one of the reasons the forum exists

This thread is absolutely fine

my experience of dealing with manufacturers on has been very good when something like this happens

B3 are one of those with a great customer service reputation, you don't get that without actually providing it.

hopefully it works out ok for you rick

Just to update this, but after sending the bat to B3 Streaky has agreed to replace it. +1 to say that their customer service is second to none.

This came today  :)

Never been too fussed about the amount of heartwood or blemishes, but feels like a beauty and it'll be a fun weekend getting the linseed oil and mallet out.

Again, can't stress enough about how brilliant the service at B3 is and many thanks to @The Doctor for sorting it out, above and beyond is an understatement!
