That's an extremely low middle! And the concaving is the whole bat! Never seen anything like this before.
-
Looks beautiful quality willow....
Is must be a custom for someone so they must of wanted this.
Personally and this is just my opinion I can't help thinking what other shape could of been made when you get such a nice looking grade of wood...
-
It's for a customer in the states.
-
I like the stickers and the basic shape, but not so much about the concaving
-
Let me just spoon my eyes out
-
It's hurting my eyes not nice at all
-
I get it's what the customer wants, but really what does this shape bring to the table?
-
I'd be worried about the handle breaking or the shoulder cracking. I'd dread to think what would happen if he caught a top edge right near the shoulder :(
-
thats quite an extreme shape, hope they enjoy it
-
Nothing custom about it as they were flogging the limited edition players bat back in the summer (£500), presume they've a few left. Can only think it's useful for laying on the wicket face down for the 'ramp' shot.

We had a couple of these come into us this summer for our knocking in service. Personally, I thought they looked weird and really couldn't quite see any reasoning behind the design. I didn't use them of course, so maybe if we could hear from someone thats actually used the bat that would be good....
-
I absolutely love those black M&H stickers - loved them when they came out and still adore them a few years later!!
-
I'd be worried the edge would snap off the back if you snicked off :-[
-
A bat for non bouncing batting tracks
-
Or croquet.
The livery is fantastic thou, on the second bat that's from the 1990's and still looks fabulous today.
Unless you have a e type jag sat in the garage how many designs can you actually say look better today than all those years ago.
-
Would be quite interesting to see how these actually play in fairness, even if it is a horrible design it could be good for off centre shots in the same way a GN scoop is.
Both stickers posted I'm here are some of the absolute best, just such a shame what's happened to the brand. Always wanted an M&H for years, then you see what they're producing now and how much they cost and it's a tragedy.

What about an Austin Healey Sprite ;)

i can somehow picture you driving that round Windsor :)
-
Id send that back, it's awful! Stickers on both bats are nice though
-
Could be experimental. Laver also experimented with some shapes - there is a triangular club that they produce for low and slow pitches.

Im fairly sure hanky dad has at some point :D

Experimenting how much you can concave a bat before the middle becomes transparent?
-
Keep the stickers, send the bat back...

Postage might be a bit expensive back to India

probably still worth it... I had an M&H bat recently that was this concaved. The worst performing, worst balances M&H bat i have ever owned. It was worth posting back from Aus. :)
-
I like it
-
Genuine question - Why does the bat get a lot larger again at the edge? What does this bring/help if and when bats are largely conclaves? Why don't they just go to a smaller edge?
-
Placebo effect of bigger being more powerful, also scientific as Chris king has talked about previously of creating an arc in the back of the bat for strength and reducing twist of the willow allowjng you to get more power transmitted through the shot as less is lost to vibration and twist

I still think that video about arches was nothing more than a marketing ploy to sell more concaved bats, but that's probably just me being cynical...
-
It's got scientific validity to it, I mean I'd still take a full shape given the option personally, and agree that it probably has helped shift some concaved bats, but equally Im not sure it makes all that much difference if im honest though, I've seen concaved bats tap up well all over and full bats tap up well all over

You're not wrong, haven't seen a video but the stuff in the cricinfo interview was a load of nonsense - not how arches work at all.
M&H do it because they can then market a '50mm edge' which your average punter likes the sound of.

Years ago on of my team mates bought a bat with a very similar shape from Pakistan along to practice, think it belonged to a friend of his. It was concaved to the max. Not sure if it was the shape or the density of the wood but it was one of the lightest bats I have seen. Not sure if it was English willow as I never saw it being used. It felt it might have shattered.

I think you are referring to this bat from CA;

One of my teammate has it, this bat is massive and picks up really light. From look of the wood, it seems if its a tape ball bat.
-
Having a full profile bat is going to be the more favoured option, as the more wood you have in a bat the better it should be. Concaving is however necessary to keep bat weight down, and also helps with pick up and balance.
I think a little concaving doesn't matter too much, especially when you take the opinion of Chris King into account.
-
It certainly wasn't a CA. It was some small brand in fact I don't even think it had stickers.

I've just spent the last 15 mins looking through millichamps twitter page and their website to see what they were offering up this year and they are concaving the nuts out of all their bats. The bat used by nick Compton on their recent open day which they've given away in a competition...well if they'd shaved any further into the bat they'd have come out of the face pretty soon! just look at the spine and the edges from this view, why?! Am I missing something here??

Why are they making these bizarre profiles?? I just can't imagine they feel great to use at all. I'm not trying to bash them deliberately I'm just sad and puzzled that looking through their stuff where ten years ago I'd have been drooling and pining for their kit now I wouldn't even consider it at all, in fact I'd actively avoid it. I remember the first bat I had from them everything about it was special. The look, the smell, the feel. It had this incredible imperfectly perfect feel about it that comes from something being totally handmade. I nearly cried tears of joy when I received it! Could barely stand to use it it was such a thing of beauty. What happened m & h!

When you look through the photos and see how tidy the workshop is you can tell that there isn't much done. Either that or they tidy it before every photo! Then you look of the workshop shots of Pete's Custom and you can tell that it's a busy place, sawdust and shavings everywhere!!
-
I'm trying to comment on goldens post without looking back thru rose coloured spectacles, similar to the Newbery thread, some of us on here remember when you got one of these bats, you were buying the absolute best in the business.
They are successfull now....what they do sells
I think I'll pretend it's 1980 and if you bought a bat it was a bat not a ski slope :)
Duran Duran anyone?
-
I adored the m&h master, the shape and stickers. Mate of mine bought one and it goes miles. Although it could be him, at the time they only did the master in 3lb. They did eventually bring out a few as light as 2lb10oz. Still regret not buying the one i picked up, it was beautifully balanced (it was £400! Back then). It is sad they are so much less desirable now.
-
Spotted one of those at club nets at the weekend, with a big chunk split out of the edge at the back!
-
I try not be cynical about M&H as I've had some fantastic bats in the past, but that's got to be the cleanest workshop I've ever seen, especially for a company that must product 1000's a year.
-
I think concaving definitely helps pickup, but I believe the maximum concaving any bat can have is upto the level of the edge. If the scooping goes further below the level of the edge, the cons outweigh the pros.. compared to a thin edge and a straight line from spine to edge (effectively no concaving and a traditional bat shape), I would prefer a bigger edge and some concaving whilst strictly never going below the line of the edge and i find it spreads the sweet spot wider...it also gives me (additionally) some placebo effect as i know what i see on the edge, i have atleast that much in the interior or more....But when the concaving is going below the edge line as in these M&H models, I am not sure about the placebo effect as you know that the interior doesnt have as much wood as the edge you are seeing..

@DorsetDan, holy post resurrection (on my behalf, sorry) - that Heritage Elite brings back great memories... muSSt not be fooled. Has anyone had eyes on one? Despite everything, I am very tempted.
-
Very tempted myself
-
@JB - I am like a moth to the light. I cannot explain it but there is something that keeps drawing me back.
-
I'm quite fond of an m&h myself! Never had a bad one, I know that there a few that have been disappointed but I also find myself drawn to another. Would quite like to have a good look at the new range. Must admit though that the overly concaved models aren't for me
-
The heritage is more of a return to some of the old models. Less concaving and it looks to me like a cross between the distinction and the amplus...so def a possible winner.
There's a fair amount of threads on this brand and some anger in the past. Having grown up with them as being 'the best' along with Newbery I don't personally
Like their advertising as its misleading to say the least. But that has been done to death on the forum.
What I would say is they still make some in the UK if that's a consideration buying for some of us.
Personally as I've said before, I would like to see them back with some good models, they are a successful brand anyway whatever opinions are expressed by clubbies like us.
I think the Heritage shape could be popular and a good seller for them.

Very balanced post. Has anyone seen/ used the Heritage? Agree shape observations, hence the interest.

M&H has always been on my wish list but what has always put me off for years is their pricing. What seemed to be heavily inflated prices in comparison to other offerings years ago still rings true today with RRP's of £550 on their top of the range bats. Yes there are discounts if not buying direct but this still puts the bats into the £480 range which is much more than custom from a range of batmakers.
Having said that, there are reductions to be had which brings them down to a cost more in line with other mainstream and boutique brands and I bought my first M&H a couple of weeks ago. I picked up a Pro grade International from their 'outlet' for 30% off RRP
My thoughts? I love it, so much so I am thinking of buying another one. Do I know 100% for certain where it is made? No. Does it perform? Absolutely. Right up there with the best performing bats I have had and with time it may be the best, it's too early to tell. Do I care where it is made? No. For some this is a real issue and I can understand individuals' need for transparency but at the end of the day, it performs and it does it very well.
The whole double S comments about the source of the bats have become tedious and as others have said have been done to death on here now and I think some are very quick to jump on a bandwagon without owning or using a bat from that particular brand. I don't know if M&H bats are the same in terms of performance as the older ranges such as the S2, distinction and harlequin as I never owned one of them. Many comment about poor finishing on bats compared to others and at that price point which I can understand that to a certain extent.
I never pictured myself as someone who would use M&H although I liked their offerings from a distance, it was never really an option due to cost. Had I taken the plunge and received something that was poorly made and poorly responding, I probably would never buy again - like any brand but what I would say is don't knock them unless you have tried as I have tried and it's difficult to pick fault with the exception of the finish which is ok but not amazing.

Holy post revival.... just broke and have taken advantage of the M&H Friday Big 30 deal. 2.10 Heritage inbound. Photos when it arrives. #OldSchool. It will go very nicely with the rather amazing Masuri helmet I got from the great Vitas recently.
