Title: Soulman's 2017 kit
Post by: SOULMAN1012 on December 23, 2016, 04:13:04 PM
So most of us I would Imagine have by now picked up last seasons bargains or received our new 2017 Kit from pre-orders or what have you and as nets will be starting in a few weeks thought we should have our 2017 kit thread up and running.

I have a few matching kit set up but first off is what I am planning on using in the coming season

Full GM kit

Bats
GM Chrome Signature 2.9 - 9 straight grains with a lovely heartwood strip basically a Octane shape with 39mm edges and little concaving, Thanks to @Uzi Sports for this bat. It feels a lot softer from the off than previous years GM's. last GM I had was in 2014 and it's certainly better then that one was. Approx 2hrs knocking in so far and impressed
GM six6 808 - bought from Owzat or Lec-Shop via eBay and again this I believe is the 2016 model and it's a very nice bat at 2.9 and really pings this has at the moment got the nod over the Chrome, it's not as pretty but it pings and sounds lovely.
GM 1885 808 - eBay bargain, has been used for seasons according to listing and weight is also 2.9 26mm edges so an old stool profile but will be perfect for early nets and outdoor nets

Softs
GM 808 pads - traditional look and quality guaranteed probably the pad iv seen the most of over the years as quality and price is perfect.
GM 808 gloves - fingers are a little stiff and will take some wearing in but again like the pads decent gloves only downside is no pittard palms but refuse to spend £80 for pittards from GM so maybe if some OLE ever come up for sale on eBay or at a really decent sale price I'll upgrade but reckon these will be fine
GM 909 gloves - eBay bargain RH women's size which was the eBay listing so the word women's probably put a lot off but basically a small men's size. Extra thumb protection these will be net and spares I reckon

Extras
GM original thigh guards not pictured but again another eBay bargain some as P2's basically
England duffle - Iv had this a while I got it through work who sponsored the cricket (NatWest) I'm told it was player issue has 12 on it I didn't think players had squad numbers etc but it's a decent size duffle large main compartment, padded bat sleeve and large outer pocket. Will fit keeping kit and whites with ease.
Helmet - ayrtek standard lid with steel grille in black

I have full Hunts (twice...)
Full H4L

I also have brandless pads so I can get just bats with matching gloves... I also have a kit addiction issue :-[

Pondering a duffle change but that is it

Only new kit I'm in the 'WANT WANT WANT' category are the New Balance whites, hopefully they become available when the season comes around.

Chrome looks very nice. How is the pickup on the chrome. Secondly, is the handle on it thick or thin? Can't seem to be able to make from the pics.

The pick up is good even though it's a light bat but it's very good, iv always found GM bats Balance and pick up to be good.
Handle is fairly thick in my view, it's perfect for my set up of one grip. I will change the grip to chevron as that's my preffered grip just a single chevron

Thanks for the info mate. I am really tempted to get the Chrome in near future, the thick handle single grip works for me best. The shape seems perfect to me as well. Hope you score lots of runs with it.

So here is the unexpected 2nd addition to my 2017 kit thread. This was my Christmas present from my Mrs and my daughter. Full Vyper Kit. Iv seen a lot of players use this in Suffolk and it turns out the lad who runs Vyper lives in Ipswich which is about 25mins from where I live on a good day. Sorry about pics sun was in and the out in my little kit cupboard at work

My Mrs contacted via website and not knowing how you buy a cricket bat basically arranged for me to visit which I did yesterday.

So the bats are Hunts made which he was very open about and this is the top of the range Venom LE, probably one of the nicest looking bats iv owned 10 dead even straight grains with almost identical gaps between each grain. just over 2.10 in weight with 38mm edge and spine running into the toe, quite a high spine and some concaving with a semi oval handle. It came unscuffed so iv added a hammer edge scuff sheet.
I picked up this years and last years Venom LE Gloves in small men's. the new versions have pittards palms and some blue and black colour with logo on the gloves last years are leather palms and all white, and pads are a nice traditional pad in normal men's RH. As it was Christmas I was given last years duffle bag as well which was a nice touch.

Can't wait for winter nets to start as I may have a tough choice which kit to use in 2017. Last season I used 1 bat in all league games and that worked well for me so going with the same thought process this year, just means I need to net a lot to find my match bat.

Excellent looking kit mate! Bat looks really nice and so do the softs. And to get a free duffle bag  (even if it's last years) was still very nice touch. You going to have fun finding out your match bat and kit.

So grabbed another New Balance bat last week, this time the TC560 for 2017. Picked this up from Mr Cricket which is on,y about 15mins from one of my offices so could be bad news.

I finished last season using a DC580 and it went very well for me scoring over 200runs in its two knocks to date. Now this is in my opinion in the big bat catagory. This has 43mm edge, little concaving, flat face and weight is 2.92 with ripple grip and scuff added. The ripple will be replaced with a single white GM control grip when I pick some more up. Also tend to be decent looking bats and really don't see with the NB range why you would buy 1260 range etc as performance and looks on both my entry level bats is excellent in my view.
Personally very very impressed with how NB bats perform from the off, the DC is a cannon and this has some pingy rebound and it's not been knocked in etc st all. Personally feel they are streets ahead of my GM and GN bats that have had a couple of hours prep work so far and on par with my Vyper (hunts bat)
Love the handle on both my NB bats, having a subtle oval handle and quite thin which I prefer. Will post full NB kit when I can but here is the new bat addition to my 2017 kit

@SOULMAN1012 43 mm edges with 2.9 weight is outstanding. :o How is the pickup and ping of this bat?

I agree with your comments about why would one buy 1260 range bat. I have  580+ from last year and it is just amazing.

Haha that's the "all,it delivered and stored at work in old unused top floor" space. My own little kit room and can tap up smash balls into foam filled bags all day and no one ever goes there

It's light at 2.9 and a high middle so pick up is very good. As I said ping wise it's superb from the off

All FC Sondhi bats are super round faces.
Great measurements though !!

The DC has a round face for sure, if the TC isn't a flat the camber must be so
Minimal you may as well call it a flat face

So this is my third bundle of kit and slowly becoming my favourite at the moment.

Bats
Gray Nicollls Ulitimate, U.K made 2.9 sourced from Jake 40mm edge, slight duckbill profile and certainly different to the GN Ultimate models I saw in my local shop the other day.
Gray Nicolls Powerbow Strauss - 2.7 again and a stunning bat, ping is just unreal and so is the grains, what a top end GN should look like but unfortunately not what current top ends from GN seem to look like now

Softs
Oblivion Test pads - brand new SD £25 bargain in the last crazy SD sale
F18 600, oblivion e41 1000, and GN select gloves. Personally think GN softs have the best fit

GN Duffle bag, single large compartment, paddd bat pocket and small zipped

Just a little update on this topic. Had my second indoor net of the season tonight and been using the GM kit.

Softs are superb, really comfy and took a blow from our opening bowler tonight flush on the hand ( he is easily 70mph) and gloves did a great job being the 808 version I was really impressed. The bat is good but even being ready now and having 3 hours it still needs to really open up but Balance and pick up are excellent, middle is long and powerful but just above and below has a bit of a hard sound. Time to try the Vyper kit for next couple of weeks and the GN to see what will be match kit come
April.
