The spinners discussion on the cook standing down thread got me thinking who is the best player never to represent brute country
I'll start with my 2p worth
James hildreth and Glenn Chappell must be up there
And until he was picked for t20s recently Michael kilnger must have been one of the better players to not have played for Australia
-
Kevin Pietersen
Awesome talent, can't believe he never got to play for South Africa...

Tabish Khan... till date not represented Pakistan. Yet has some very impressive bowling stats.
Oh and add Sadaf Hussain to that list too :D
-
Least Klinger finally gets an aussie call up! about time!

Glenn Chappell played 1 ODI
Yes the the Glenn Chappell post had me thinking sure I d seen him in an England shirt.

There are so many Aussies from that generation that didn't get a fair go in Test cricket by playing at all or having a very limited record (Hodge, Law, Love, D Hussey, Di Venuto, Cox, Siddons etc) and then those who had to wait until they were older for a decent run (M Hussey, Rogers).
From an England point of view, more recently Hildreth has been unlucky and before that players like Mal Loye and Glen Chapple.

very amusing touché..... :)

The wait to see Mal Loye in an England shirt was worth it, slog sweeping Brett Lee for 6 takes some doing.

With a 2lb 5oz bat... (apparently)
David Sales is the one who springs to mind.

You could also list Strauss, prior, Jennings, Compton, trott etc in this category
-
Gary Pratt.
I bet Punter still hasn't forgiven him.
-
"and 50odd ODI's" :D
To be fair, it's quite understandable that, in modern cricket, someone could have played 50 ODIs without anyone noticing.

Good shout
think he played for Middx back in the day and scared batsmen witless

That's the one. Only read about him in Simon Hughes' book and checked his stats which are amazing. Apparently Brearley was really underwhelmed at the signing to replace Wayne Daniel but he ended up topping the national averages and they won the double!

@ppccopener no idea what's going on......
-
In the modern era, Klinger. Unless he gets in the XI next week or whenever it is. Along with Stuart Law and Mal Loye in the didn't play for his country but actually did category, Paul Nixon!
-
Of the current generation I think Sam Northeast has been unlucky, especially when our one day sides a year or so back we're so pants.
James Kirtley as well was a fantastic bowler not sure he ever played internationally either

Seeing the Vincent van der post and the reasons why caused me to think of a world class South African : Clive Rice.
-
Kevin Pietersen

You could add Robin Smith and Allan Lamb Tony Greig

Seeing the Vincent van der post and the reasons why caused me to think of a world class South African : Clive Rice.
Clive Rice was South Africa's first captain on readmission.
-
@ppccopener no idea what's going on......
It's alright Churchy ignore me, ive had a bit of a random day on the forum, if anything gets posted about Kevin bloomin Pieterson I start posting inaccurate random stuff. We've all been there thou right?
Look forward to our next duel at practice, my aim is to get the ball down there faster than it comes back (http://)

Clive Rice did play for South Africa when we were readmitted to international cricket and captained the team to India if I recalled correctly.

@SOULMAN1012
Kirtley played a fair bit for England, got a sixfer in Tests, this catch in ODIs https://youtu.be/Gh6CI142pus and played in the first World T20
Not bad for a chucker
-
Nothing is getting past Alvaro on the qualification in this thread :)
Ok I known this does not really qualify Because he did very briefly play for SA(I think it was just a couple of tests) but Barry Richards was robbed of being possibly the best ever batsman for South Africa.
Yes he was that good just happened to be at his peak in an era of sporting wilderness
There may not be that many on here old enough but would encourage some you tube clips of him.
Truly a beautiful player with immense talent.
-
He played four @ppccopener 😉
I'll get my coat.

Remember that, hell of a catch!
-
how about ex England bowling coach david saker along with his onetime bowling partner Damien wright , both awesome on their day , very unlucky not to have baggy green caps , I know wright played for the PM's XI & Aust A , but should have got to run on for the test team.
-
Clive Rice was South Africa's first captain on readmission.
I was thinking of tests rather than the 3 ODIs he played
-
In hindsight , James Hopes probably deserved a test cap at some stage . He was diminutive in size and thus underrated as a bowler , but he had enough pace , could swing it , and even opened the bowling for qld on occasion. His late middle order batting was handy too . When guys like Ronald MacDonald can get a test gig ( don't get me wrong , i rated him too ....good player ) then surely Hopes could have got a turn . It's not like Watson never got injured or anything .

-
Darren Stevens? Can't believe he has never played any one day cricket for England with his all round ability.
-
On the basis that it is difficult to say that anyone under the age of 35 won't still get a chance, I'm sticking for oldies.
Of England qualified players in recent times, I reckon you'd do well to find someone more unlucky than David Sales. A player of immense talent and no little power, he always seemed to get injured at the wrong time. More important, unlike some prolific first class performers who look unsuited to the top level, he looked like he was perfect for it.

He's a wise man, Manormanic.

Franklyn Stephenson

@SOULMAN1012 James kirtley played for England in tests and odi's, he now plays occasionally for a local Sunday team

He plays once in a while for burwash village less so since he took up the England women's coaching

How have we managed 4 pages without mentioning the main man himself?? How he's never got a cap in T20/ODIs is beyond me.

Doesn't he have a bit of a cult following?
I can never decide if he's unlucky never to be capped, or his fans are just overselling his talent!

More tattoo than man.
Also, not sure if "Unlucky" is an unfortunate phrase given his personalised GN Bat...

Five years younger, he would probably have gotten a go in the shorter formats - but he was just that bit too old for a punt selection by the time England got wise to the idea that horses for courses didn't have to just mean picking Mike Smith for the Headingley test. His bowling has gone off a bit recently.
