Hi everyone,
A quick note to apologise for my lack of time on the CBF over the last season, there has been a huge development running parallel to cricket in cycle helmets which is finally showing signs of completion. In addition to this, the "Off the shelf" range technology is almost ready and in some ways I prefer this to the traditional technology (it's very very different!) Anyway thats for another thread!
I've been thinking about launching a bat for a while, but I'm not a bat maker so Robert Pack @ Blueroom has kindly offered to be the craftsman. A simple, clean traditional blade.
However the motivation for me is the graphics. I'd like to show you all before anywhere else, meet "Wifey"
The story is how many many people say they loose their partners to cricket, to the point they joke about being married to the sport or most notably, their bat. So here she is!
Artwork has been sketched by a good friend and talented tattoo artist Han, more on her later.
Heres the link...
I'd love to see what you all think on my blog!

Retail would be circa £240, thanks again in advance for the thoughts in all forms!
Very best,
George

Christ! You could crack walnuts with that ass!!! Love the stickers George!!

top work goerge, stickers look amazing, looking forward to the new range

Is this another "joke" like the see-thru pads?
I think it is in poor taste and cricket world doesn't need such an overly-sexualized display on a cricket bat. Our club now has kids, pre-teens, in attendance for cricket games. Sometimes there are wives and children that tag along with dads w/occasional team participation by a wife or a daughter. What kind of a message are we sending to them? This sticker would be offensive to them.
Sad!

I think the things children see on a daily basis through all sources of media will have exposed them to over sexualised images of women long before this, plus it's a joke, it's a cartoon style image and can be seen not to be serous not my personal cup of tea but I appreciate the idea

Thank you both for your honesty, and this is the whole point! As an industry cricket can comparatively be extremely conservative, so it's up to brands to produce items that provoke more emotional responses.
-
Fun but not really appropriate.
-
Love it, want one!
-
On the tattoo theme, maybe an arm guard with a big heart on it with an arrow through and scrolls with Mam and Dad around it? ;)

Oh boy, where to start. We have had scantily clad dancers at t20 matches for a decade now. Should they be banned lest a woman is offended? There is nothing sexual about the image, if you think there is, I'm afraid that rather projects your mindset rather than a problem inherent to the artwork. Perhaps women should cover up and stay at home, right?
'What kind of message are we sending to them?'
We are not, it is a picture on a cricket bat. If you are so concerned, may I draw your eye to those places in the world where a woman may still be killed for the crime of being raped? If you have anger and vitriol, it could be aimed elsewhere far more productively.
'This sticker would be offensive be to them.'
To them, or to you? What makes you think you can speak for all women?
Surely there are greater problems to get uppity about.

Are they wearing a thong bikini or scantily clad? Big difference between cheer leaders in a sporting event and kids in a local game gawking at someone's bat. I must say that those cheer leaders look lame; all the color and light looks cheap/plastic. You know what I am saying.

Are you ok with your daughter at a cricket ground looking at such a cricket sticker? May I draw your eyes to places where women are raped in a bus or tourists raped after being drugged? Your self-righteous, and binary indignation could be better aimed elsewhere far more productively.
'This sticker would be offensive be to them.'

Considering a family environment we project, to them. Now, what makes you say you can speak for all women and what they like? Are you an expert in women's like? Are you a woman? Victoria Secret model?
Surely there are greater problems to get uppity about.
Yes. Please take your own advice.
-
Cant take it home/show it to wife/kids for sure..
Unlike what someone said, scantily clad cheergirls and a batsman using this bat are quite different, in the former, it has got nothing to do with the batsman unlike the latter..
-
I think its ace, for the record, my misses loved it and was not even slightly offended. In fact its the first time i can remember her ever being interested in a cricket bat. Which is the point right?
-
So many memes! Don't know what to choose................
-
^ choose "good taste". :D

I really do seem to have hit a nerve here, so apologies for the unintentional derail.
Most of your response is just you repeating the points I made in an illogical fashion, but I will take you up on one thing. I have two daughters, 8 and 14. Both come along to my matches. The 8 year old spends her time playing cricket with the other kids of her age, and although the 14 year old is getting a bit too 'cool' to come much these days, I can assure you that neither of them would be remotely interested in a sticker on a piece of wood, let alone offended.
-
For me this works as a one off, an artwork rather than a serious foray into bat making for the masses. Not sure that people use modern critical theory much when they're buying a bat! but it's certainly interesting to see a different take and not just going for bland variations on a theme. Perhaps apply the theory in a less divisive way? Keep the concept of interweaving a story into the sticker design I really like that.
-
Cycle helmet?
Called headkayse @Dan W
-
Right - my opinion? I love the art work but I do love art anyway so it appeals to my artistic side.
It is like a tattoo and is a little cheeky so don't think many people would honestly find it offensive!!
Would I have a bat with it on? Maybe for fun in the nets, but I am determined to have at least closely matched bat/softs (FKW) this season.
I did ask the missus who is a lot better brought up that I am! So was nice to get her opinion!!
She doesn't like tattoos so wasn't keen on it. She did not find it offensive though - sexual or otherwise.
-
As we all have come to know George anything he has done or has plans to do will always be out of the ordinary so to me this has come as no surprise I think Chris Gale maybe first in the queue sticker wise good luck

First, you actually conflated two very different issues thus airing your ignorance. So no apology needed, just apologize to people around you.
Second, you have two kids? Wow!

When you go out to bat, do you use one of the bats from your collection? or do you just use that giant stick that's up your ass?
-
Ladies. Please.
Anyway the design, not my thing. Each to their own.
-
Yes let's keep it civil guys as Goodleave says, the forum needs to be a a place where there is respect its better for everyone.
As for the design, don't find it offensive, I asked my wife she doesn't find it offensive and as @tom line pointed out, there's a whole world out there kids can access, I can't see this causing any issues.
The artwork it's self is good, so from that point of view and the idea it may get people talking about it from a sales point of view-it's probably good thinking. Something different does at least get interest, I'm not in sales, but if I was that would be the idea.
As a bat personally I wouldn't buy it in a million years. If I knew it was a Rob Pack and it was blank-yes I would because he is up there as one of the very best IMHO.
But yes....each to their own, it may well find a target audience.
Good luck with it.
-
I'm a fan, I'd ask the wife what she thinks but the truth is that I don't really care
-
I actually love there bat, cracking idea, it's fun, and a great piece of art .
Memes I would have attached would be about how those easily offended seem to have escalated this.

Think it's amusing it apparently will offend woman when I woman is the artist behind it.
My missus says "better than the half dozen in the spare room"

No, I have two daughters. I have three kids. Try to keep up :D
Back on topic, I really like the idea. It is different, and well done. Can't think of too many original bat branding designs in recent years.
Good luck to them.
-
I'm so offended, cricket gear should be strictly beige and non-offensive.
I think all "made in England" or St. George's cross stickers should be removed from all bats as they might upset someone who considers them racist...

In all seriousness I love them, they'd go excellently with my thigh pads...
There's a beautiful irony here, with all the talk of people being offended and the little anecdote attached to these!)
http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=38853.0 (http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=38853.0)
Evening all
Bit of a back story to this one.
Back before I broke my thumb and I was able to attend training, I had a complaint about my gear.
One of the colts (I'm guessing under 13s) had stayed on for the adult training session after theirs had finished. His mother came to collect him as I was padding up. Being a training session I wore my thigh pads over my shorts.
The thigh pads in question were Aero P2s. Fairly plain with nothing to cause any upset, right? Wrong! The mother saw me padding up, and came over to tell me my kit was inappropriate to have on display in front of her son. The blank look on my face must have told her I had no clue what she was on about. She then made a point of loudly saying "it's awful that you feel it's acceptable to walk round wearing something plastered with the word strippers"
At the time I didn't know whether to laugh at the stupidity of the whole incident, or cry about the state of society nowadays.
Keen to avoid any controversy, I sought a suitable replacement. Seeing Woodyspin's post of his Strettons made me pine for my old set back, that I foolishly sold. A few texts and a cash plus Strettons swap deal was negotiated with Chad (who I sold my old set to) and everyone's happy. He has a pair of Strettons the right size for him plus some beer money, while I have my bespoke set back.
Even the bag they come in oozes class.
I went for a plain design, with black back so they're easy to keep looking clean
(http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb450/CPye061194/20160512_223448_zpspnu5ai4i.jpg)
I got my initials on the inside to prevent them going walkabout into someone else's bag
(http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb450/CPye061194/20160512_223533_zpsvbl9tamh.jpg)
And to make sure I don't upset any easily offended parents, I've kept checking there's no reference to strippers on the artwork. I think these will be fine! ;)
With some strategic strap placement I can even make sure all the artwork is on display if I wear my thigh pads over my shorts
(http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb450/CPye061194/20160512_225015_zpsbyyuqmst.jpg)

all can say us she is one smoking lady....
not being funny but it hardly has any flesh showing it hardly a top shelf shuffle is it...
I wouldn't buy one because I have too many bats however there different and great artwork and people shouldn't be offended.
-
Just shown my wife and 3 of her mates. They all actually quite like it, appreciate the quality of the artwork & certainly don't find it offensive in anyway.
Love those thigh pads @WalkingWicket37 !
People need to get over themselves if they find a picture of a pin up offensive!

This made me laugh Dave!
PC world gone made nobody played celebrity Darth Vador Box, well maybe not celebrity more deep heat
When the woman form is knocked yet there not a nipple or flange in sight and we talk the way people talk is mental.
My wife just caught me looking and called me a dirty bugger but would she be more worried if I was looking at Hornby Trains weekly , hell she would
I respect people beliefs I do including @InternalTraining but that is not offensive, there so much in the world to worry about than a skilful drawing of a very good looking lady.
-
Dave is a legend.
'Flange'
Absolute gold.
-
We are getting to a stage where people will get offended that other people are offended. Way too politically correct these days.
-

I find it offensive that people get offended at other people's offence
-
I've seen some melodramatic crap on this forum over the years, but this is up there.
I like the artistic design.
Keep doing you, George!
-
No, I have two daughters. I have three kids. Try to keep up :D
You should really take your own advice, Forest. :D
-
When you go out to bat, do you use one of the bats from your collection? or do you just use that giant stick that's up your ass?
No, I just pull one out of your ass and use that. Good weight you carry there. :D
-
I just think it's a bit tacky to be honest. Lacking in class. Just my opinion.
-
A little too late to lock this discussion?
-
The artwork type is from an era. An artwork is not meant to be politically correct but invokes discussion. I actually like it as it is left field of what are on bats these days, however, the back stickers are a bit Blaah. @InternalTraining have you shown these to any women in your life? if so what do they say?
-
Post of the year getting the term "flange" in, lovely stuff. Like it my self very B-29 bomber.

! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHMoDt3nSHs#)
one of my favs above from a good comic
Looks cheeky to me
Doubt you would get it past ECB and PC people at a club though
Great for a tour or club game

Anyone got a number for the RSPCA?
I'm pretty sure inserting and removing giant sticks from a donkey constitutes animal abuse...

Don't find it offensive more old seaside postcard humour but I wouldn't want artwork on a bat that when in the middle gives the opposition the opportunity to try and distract me get enough off it as it is.

@Seniorplayer you keep saying you get enough of that from the opposition.
I'm a fatty, who bats No.11 with top end FKW gear that's rather bright, you'd think I was a sledgers wet dream yet I hardly get any comments.
What on earth do you do to get so much crap from the other teams you play against? ???
-
Depends on how long you are out there for @WalkingWicket37 ?
It takes some Neanderthals more than an over to come up with an adequate sledge!
-
It's interesting to read the contrasting views that have been expressed on this thread. For me there is nothing wrong with the image, I just wouldn't want it on a cricket bat as I don't think it is keeping with my vision of the game; if others want to that's fine with me; it would probably raise a few laughs.
I suppose it's fun but wouldn't having it on a bat be, to use a term I have seen here before, a bit village? You wouldn't expect to see it on serious cricket bat used by a serious player - or would you? I also think this might be "the Fox" having another one of his thought provoking ideas like his pads.
-

I'd love to say I was offended, but the bloke at the other end kept shortening my stay last season!
Plenty of not outs stood at the non strikers end, but apparently you need to get some runs for them to improve your average... :D

Also use full top end GN kit and bat at 1 maybe it's because the opposition think I am a poser or because they know I can bat and bat then bat some more....
-
it may be a great way of distracting the wicket keeper and slips :o
-
Also use full top end GN kit and bat at 1 maybe it's because the opposition think I am a poser or because they know I can bat and bat then bat some more....
If they have to resort to sledging you're already 1 up! :)
-
I like that it's new and different and can see it appeals to a certain audience, personally I wouldn't want those stickers on my bats and wouldn't buy one with these stickers on. All this nonsense about offensive is just BS as has been said the laungage used at cricket matches with children about or not is far worse than anything that could be out on a bat in my opinion.
I wouldn't mind if my daughter saw those stickers personally at 10yrs old or at any age to be honest
-
There's plenty of people, male and female, with pin up tattoos, should we ask them to cover them for fear of offending someone?
-
I don't remember 'bosom bats' causing such a stir; arguably, they were far more offensive...
-
would she be more worried if I was looking at Hornby Trains weekly , hell she would
*Rubs thighs vigourously*
-
I've had a similar tattoo down my forearm for the past 5 years.
I have a wife (who hates tattoos), 2 girls, I work with the general public everyday and teach exercise classes to 30 odd women with a variety of ages every week.
Never has anyone said they are offended by the pin up on my arm.
-

That.
And, what I said earlier.
Stretton does these childish experiments and expects some market miracle. His products are pretty late to the market and overpriced too. George, why don't you focus on improving your time-to-market and pricing rather than these cheap stunts?
-
It is a cheap stunt! There, I said it. If it sends a burning sensation down your you-know-what, good. :D

I can't get my head round why it's bothering you so much @InternalTraining it's just a picture of a woman in her underwear, you could see more revealing images in a bloody Marks & Spencer advert!

I have had the pleasure to have early dealing with George and he has been nothing but a gentleman during those dealings. I also admire his passion for pursuing something different and innovative in a very competitive market.
I think that the very personal nature of the comments/insults are very uncalled for. Constructive criticism and feedback is fine and I think it was accepted by George early on in this thread, but I don't know if this thread is still constructive at this point.
This wont be to everyone's taste, but many things aren't.
This is just my two cents worth.

George,
Can you bring out a secondary more youthful, voluptuous offering too. "The mistress". For when the wife gives up.
Best regards

She doesn't understand, she just loves balls hitting her face...

How about a T20 range called the side-bitch?
-
I can't believe that the willow hasn't been mentioned yet, there's 2 bloody pin knots on it, disgraceful :D
-
That.
And, what I said earlier.
Stretton does these childish experiments and expects some market miracle. His products are pretty late to the market and overpriced too. George, why don't you focus on improving your time-to-market and pricing rather than these cheap stunts?
@InternalTraining childish stunt and your other comments about George and his company are bang out of order mate. I don't see how you can criticise his brand or products when they are worn by a large of amount of pro's and international players in terms of his main thigh protection angle. If this isn't a huge hit or his pads are not a huge hit the fact is the guy brought a product to market and cornered it at pro level. Chill out mate unless everything you have done in life has been perfect and worked out in every way.

The wife bought me this picture around 5 years ago http://vandalart.co.uk/vandal_vault.asp (http://vandalart.co.uk/vandal_vault.asp)
It has hung on the wall in full view since
Not once has anyone commented in a negative way and she has our house like a community centre!

"Dammit! I've accidentally worn my Ass-less shorts... again."

^ this made my day :D

If you had her on the front and the old Vulcan Hercules stickers on the back, you would have a balanced his and hers bat.
My wife thought it was a bit sad!!

Yawn. It's called being entrepreneurial and having an imagination - without people like George we wouldn't have half the technological advancements we have nowadays!!
Check out the Headkayse invention he's been working on, it's genuinely brilliant and proves what I've said above (and 100% takes priority over anything cricket related!!!)

I think it's fair enough to distinguish between SF's genuinely functional and technology advancing products (good) and this rather tacky and lacking in class bat (bad).

Have people forgotten how to AGREE TO DISAGREE ??
-
Surprised nobody has suggested a "make sure your handle has a rubber on" quote yet for the lady
-
I dont find the image offensive. But it hasn't been integrated into a design that looks like it belongs on a bat. Just sort of plonked on. Credit for trying something different though.
-
Not my cup of tea.
The resulting "banter" probably gives you all the feedback u need.
-
If you want to use a tattoo style image for you bat stickers, how about something like this
(http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa246/jbl_012/chinese-dragon-tattoo-design_zpsysbihhvs.jpg) (http://s196.photobucket.com/user/jbl_012/media/chinese-dragon-tattoo-design_zpsysbihhvs.jpg.html)

Similar type of thing to some of the older Kippax designs with the long Dragon image wrapping around.
-
Honestly, I doubt I would buy a bat with such a design. But, I am happy to salute the effort at innovation, and to offer full support for the labels being placed on Rob Pack handmade bats. It would have been easy and less expensive to slap them on another batch of imported blanks, so kudos to Stretton Fox for sticking to their principles.

It's an interesting one really, isn't it? Whilst I think the design looks good, and I've no surprise at all that most of the guys on here like it (although I probably wouldn't buy one), it doesn't really help with the whole "equality" thing.
I guess my question is, is there an equivalent design for female or gay cricketers with a hot guy dressed in a thong, showing his (No Swearing Please) in a similarly cheeky pose called "The Hubby"? If so, then all is equal and no-one can complain....
