Announced his international retirement, finishing his career with the 2nd highest career average of anyone to have played 20+ tests, averaging 61.87 from his 20 tests with 5 tons.

Flat track bully
-
Similar to Vinod Kambli
-
Solid career. Let's hope he continues to play first class cricket in WA for some time to come.
-
Good on him retiring before going to India, keeps his average in check given his poor tour of Sri Lanka.
Definitely a flat track bully but given he's not from the sub continent he won't be called that - different yard stick for aus and eng batsmen
-
Played at the WACA all his career, hardly a flat track bully. Did benefit from facing a few ordinary attacks.
-
It was a nice little story, I think.
-
Benefited against a pathetic West indies attack that has given away more recent world records than any other team.
Also benefited from the shocker no ball decision vs NZ which boosted his average more.
-
Let's not forget his stints at Notts and Middlesex. Anyone know his stats from CC off the top of their heads?
-
2015 - 451 runs @ 56.37
Thats all i could find quickly

He was never in the frame to go to india anyway - he wasn't exactly dropped , but was unavailable for a test ( concussion, hit by a bouncer) then overlooked once he was available again . Sure , might have gone as badly in india as he did in s.l , but he didn't dodge the tour .

I only know that he has always scored shed loads of runs in county cricket. I think he also had a spell at Hampshire.
-
I was surprised when he was dropped. He had test match temperament and technique. A few failures and he is out. Shame!!

He wasn't dropped as such, he was injured playing in the shield and his replacement cemented his place in the Test side.

20 odd test at ave of 65 shouldnt count?
I think he brought the experience and stability at #5 to an inexperienced aussie team.
-
Wish him well for the future. Is a test a game of 60 odd flattering ?? Yes. He was found wanting when the ball moved but then so do all the modern players. He has a technique when it's not moving and the bowling isn't great to exploit it, realistically that's what it's all about if you play most of your games on roads. Not his fault.
Hopefully a few years in cc left in him

So who makes way and where does he bat?
Handscomb has 2 fifties and 2 hundreds at an average of 90 odd batting at 5, surely you leave him there?
I suppose Wade could make way and Voges would strengthen the middle order, but I don't think Hanscomb's glovework is of Test match quality.
-
Voges was gone with anyone sharp, really struggled with the short stuff towards the end. Nice guy, good solid cricketer.
-
Decent bat with a very good test average, but I often think Mike Atherton must look at test cricket today and partly wish he was born 20 years later. Not to take anything away from Voges, he doesn't pick the oppo.
-
better player than i think a lot give him credit for, scored runs at notts and middlesex, only found out on his last few tests but should have probably played an awful lot more when he was younger!

Flat track bully
Reminded me of a certain Graham Hick.

Wouldn't go that far! Hick was a legend at County level, just never quite broke the test arena

Yes he was a county legend but he was at his best on flat tracks against county medium pacers .
60 plus tests but rarely produced the run scoring feats he was capable of at county level.
Seem to recall he had a problem against the short stuff when bowled at pace

I think he would today, just a quick look back at the attacks he would have faced.
In Hicks era....Pak had Waqar and Wasim, WI Ambrose and Walsh et al, Aus McGrath, Warne et al, SA Donald and Pollock.Donald, De Villiers, mostly over 5 test series not many easy runs there.
I don't think today's bowling compares.
