Have seen a number of bats with very square toes and was wondering what the benefits were. To me they look as if they would add weight, stick in the ground when running your bat in and are pretty ugly. I assume there must be a good reason for them though. Thoughts?

@procricket is the biggest lover of square toes I know. He actually has square toes himself and on all his bats.

A square toe is designed to help prevent yorker damage as its stronger.

Are they actually stronger? Surely the sharp edges would make them weaker compared to a rounded shape?

Thats why i avoid them The theory is Adam there's more wood so if you toe end one it's less likely to take a chunk out of your bat

I thought the square toes were used because they make a bat look wider.

Considering how few square toed bats there are out there, its remarkable how many I see in for repair with serious toe damage...

Not to be confused with flatter face perhaps.

JP Gavan changed how he cut the toes on his bats, he went from square to round citing durability reasons.

I've got a Toro with a square toe and the one thing that I really like about it is how well it sits on the ground when you are in your stance. I've had no durability issues and cant remember having a problem running it in, however im not famed for running quick singles :(

Square toes definitely blow out from yorkers . I got sick of it , so got some bats reshaped /rounded toe etc . They do tap up on the crease real nice , as others have said , helps get your grip just right . Just bought 5 bats with square toes . As a compromise, ive kept them squarish , but sanded the edges of the toe so they aren't sharp anymore .

I'm looking forward to an essay from Dave about square toes, where's he at? :D

Personally having used a NB DC bat back end of last season I prefer square toes, purely for the way the bat sits in my stance, in terms if issues when running in etc there not at right angles so no issue there for me and I add a strip of edge tape across the toe to give extra protection. My personally view to toe damage is the excessive force people use when tapping the crease and the fact they do this at indoor nets. This in my view weakens the bat toe over time which when added in with a Yorker causes damage, added in the amount of people that either struggle to pick up the length of a Yorker and try and drive it or just try and smash it to the boundary, means people tend to play Yorkers very hard.

I couldn't have agreed more. I avoid square toe bats for the same reason. I personally feel that square toe bats are more vulnerable against Yorkers and are less durable.

Also read somewhere that a square toe helps you control the shot due to the square giving you a supeRior stance but a guess it depends on your stance.

@JB
No essay from me about it they just sit better for me since I started using them and got used to them.
People are right about them being more prone to damage.
but I will not stop as I'm used to them.
Do they make the bat look wider I'm not so sure on that mind.
My theory is if youer trying to belt a Yorker good luck no matter what the shape of the toe.
@Seniorplayer that is my theory too

I personally prefer a square toe (and duckbill). several related reasons (just my personal feel/opinion) ...
1) square toe gives more hitting surface area on bat,
2) it makes bat face look bigger giving me more confidence to middle the ball..
3) i like to feel my bat as a simple rectangle to hit the ball rather than a complicated shape with rectangle top and semicircle bottom..
4) my square toe bats generally ping better off the bottom than the curved toe ones..
5) feels very stable when tapping bat
6) more surface area when blocking yorkers/ driving full balls
(lastly, duckbill for pickup)

Not a fan myself but agree with all of the above
