Title: Why do you use the weight you do...?
Post by: 19reading87 on March 03, 2017, 07:32:10 AM
Been having a think about bat weights and how heavy or light people use.

We all know that Sachin the little master used a really heavy bat for years despite being of a very slight nature. And that Lara used the fling around a 2.6 bat.

Now I know everything is personal preference but I'm seeing why people use the weight they do.... and the weight of their bat.

I don't really focus on weight if it feels good it feels good I have 3 match bats all which I think feel perfect
1. H4l warbird 2.13
2. Tk warner copy 2.15
3 Tk pro 2.8
So pretty much all as far apart as you could get but I feel I could pick up any one of them and be comfortable with it

Used to use 3lb plus bats as was a no.11 when I started and that was all Matalan had at the time of me going so got used to that wait but found as technique changed and changed from bowler to sort of batsmen thing a ma jig I was late so used lighter bats

not sure what weight im using now as haven't weighed any of my current bats

I ask for 2lb8-10 naked long blade then double bound so should be around 2lb11/12 but not sure

I like this weight as I have a higher back lift now so seems easier to manoeuvre bat and I remember being told to use as light a bat as I feel comfortable and I have found I do not loose any power going lighter

Use as light a bat as you can

maybe hand speed and timing if you got naturally fast hand speed that puts your timing out you go heavier bat.
jut a thought.

Personally I don't mind and currently use bats from 2lb6oz to 2lb 14 oz. for me it's all in the feel of the handle and pickup. Sometimes I think some people have a fixed idea of what dead weight works for them and them become a little over zealous in their pursuit of bats at that weight.

Why?

Because it compromises technique.

For me if it picks up good and feels right in my hands no matter what the weight I'll go with that. I like to feel a little bit of weight when I pick it up though

not easy one to answer this. To use a light bat you need decent hand eye co-ordination and fast hands thru the ball definatley helps.

too heavy a bat and you limit some shots, as you go up and play a better level(presuming you do or have done) bowlers soon work you out and if you cant cut or pull you will be peppered-limiting you scoring shots.

only thing I would say is good advise I got was visiting Andrew Kember a long time ago he helped me pick out a couple of Salix bats I came down to buy

first thing he asked me what weight I wanted, I think I said 2lb 9oz or 2lb 10 only...there were scales in the area we were in

He then said do not use the scales to pick your bat, choose the ones that feel right and narrow it down to 2 without using the scales.

I did that and then the bats were weighed and were heavier than I initially wanted.

I don't personally have a method myself but I thought this was good advice and it sunk in.

I could currently pick something from up that's between 2lb8 to 2lb14 and would happily use any of them.
I think the 2lb11-12 bats are the ones I feel most comfortable using, but I'm sure it's all in my head!

@RPC/Blueroom Cricket - Adie
Why would it compromise technique? Provided you don't have he arms of a 12 year old girl and the bat doesn't pick up like a plank there's no reason you shouldn't be able to do something you can do with a 2-6 with something heavier

Never been too hung up on weight, the 2-3 bats i own at the moment that I use are all between 2,7.5 and 2,9.5, I think much more than that and I'd need a while to get used to the extra weight.

I have found I hold my shape better with a 2.11 bat than with a lighter bat. Anything more then I get tennis elbow. It is a bit if a fine line for me.

2.12, i have bats at 2.10 and find i lose shape with those or i am through the ball early with a lighter bat, saying that for hit and giggle (t20) ill probably try the 2.10 bats!!

I agree with adie as above

I would say use as light as you can as if you are batting for longer periods fatigue can creep in and technique goes when fatigue sets in for us mere mortals

everyone is different and some may be happy at 2lb10 but others may feel this is a twig

its personal preference the lightest I am comfortable with is 2lb10/11 but for others that might be 3lb or 2lb6

there's a whole other thread on tennis/golfers elbow

do you think it's def the way forward to go significantly lighter for those of us that have suffered with elbow problems?

As an opening bat and only 5ft 6 inches 2 lb 6 ounce I need the  bats lightness   against the new ball bat speed and all that.     also  like to pull and hook the quicks leave the heavy bats to the hitters

While I don't really have a set weight for a bat - I like a bat with a bit of weight in it. I don't like it to feel too light in the hands. Generally I find anything 2.10 or over seems to work for me. I also like something with a full profile that has minimal concaving.

Current match bat is a Malik limited edition at 2.14, This has taken over from my SS Gladiator at 2.13 (seems to have gotten a bit lighter over 3 years). Every now and then I'll use the GM Argon at 2.11 (cracker bat) or the CA 1500 Plus at 2.10 (another cracker).

Of course it is you what you lose in welight you gain in bat speed  but the main benefit is  that the lighter bat will enable you to bat longer as you won't be distracted by elbow pain

I have tennis elbow , the last 10 months or so . All my bats are between 2lb6oz and 2lb9oz.  The 2lb9oz's exacerbate the elbow pain( particularly when off driving) , but 2lb8oz is fine . So i don't think you need to drop too much weight necessarily,  just enough to not strain so hard .

Don't really consider weight at all now, I know I prefer the lighter end of the spectrum, but it is all purely on the pick-up. I have 3 bats, and I couldn't tell you the weight of any of them, simply that they pick up well.

that's what I was thinking......just a bit of a drop say from 2 10 oz to 2 lb 8 or something like that...

too much weight change and it might affect what you have got used to playing with.

thanks

Pain is the friend of tennis elbow! You need to punish it as much as you can to rebuild the damage.

I'm down to 2.8 now
Might go up a bit once the season starts, but only an ounce or so.
I've used upto 3lb bats in my younger gym days, but I wouldn't be able to play a shot nowadays with anything over 2.10.
All depends on what shots you play, how long you bat, physical condition, balls being faced etc etc

We are all different,
I've always felt your better using a lighter bat, than one too heavy for you

I usually use 2.9lb have 2 bats around that weight but my main match bat this year is 2.11lb thanks to the pick up.

I don't ever look for a bat based on weight, I tend to try a sample from 2.7 to 2.10 and see which ones feel best and then narrow it down to 2 or 3. I will then tap them up and weigh them to make a final decision.

On my recent trip up to Kookaburra I was given around 10-12 Blaze bats and only weighed them once I was down to 2, they both felt very similar but the one I went with was 2 ounces heavier so I went with that as it felt a tad better and the lighter one I felt would encourage me the be early on my shots due to being that light.

Interesting
I thought it was rest that was the friend  won't punishing your elbow aggravate it

2lb8 is about optimal for me. I find these have the best balance for me when in the back lift position helps me transition to the ball smoother. I thought I was always a 2lb10 guy till i tried my current match bat. Don't think I will vary to much from this mark now +/- 0.5lb.

Anything from 2.8-2.14 really. All depending on the feel. I will say that I am uncomfortable using a lighter bat- lets say a 2.8. Maybe its just a mental thing but I feel my timing and my technique is much much better using 2.11 and above.

I think weight depends a lot on your batting style. Someone who gets runs by getting under the ball generally uses heavy bat than average. But that makes playing shots square of the wicket harder for obvious reasons. Even SRT didnt look very comfortable playing a conventional square cut because of the heavy bat.
Another factor is what you have been using since you started playing. I think with adequate practice you can get used to any weight you desire to use.
SRT used heavy bat since school days which resulted in strong "batting muscles", better balance and made him pick the length early. Another example is a skinny Root can bat with 2.10+ bat against 140 kph.

Bottomline is use what suits your batting style. Practice will help you get used to the weight which is generally where amateurs lack.

All about feel for me as well. Stopped weighing bats before buying some years ago. I've mostly used 2.8-2.10 but my highest scores have been with a bat thats 2.12. That said i dont really have the pull or cut in my locker...

As much as feel is the most important thing, and I'm sure plenty of people would give me stick for this, my preferred weight is very precise - about 2.10.5-2.11 (pre oil, scuff, second grip etc.) Very accurate picking them out too I think? If I go lighter than that I don't like it, feels like I'm batting with a twig and the power is gone. Can go heavier but even a little bit over and I don't hit the ball as hard, fine for front foot driving type shots but have to force it too much when playing more aggressively which kills the shot. Pretty sure this is due to my batting style (all about the break of the wrists through the ball) and the fact I like a mid-low bat. Don't get the modern trend for 2.13 bats that pick up like 2.10, for me you're just wasting wood higher up the blade to get the pickup lighter. Do think I'd prefer to use a slightly heavy bat than a slightly light one though.

What weight bat should you use? Simple - the heaviest bat that you're completely comfortable swinging. Heavier = better value for your shots, but if it's restricting your swing or what shots you can play then that's clearly not going to help your batting. Whether that means 2.7 or 2.15 for you is for you to judge.

I prefer a lightish bat 2.7 - 2.9. I feel this allows me control to play all my shots. Much heavier and I struggle with my horizontal bat shots particularly if I stay at the crease a while.  Used to use a heavier bat for t20 league but dont even bother with that now

Feel is everything. You could get a 2.08 bat that feels like a 2.10 or a 2.10 that feels like a 2.08. I initially thought that I needed the lightest possible bat because I tend to use my wrists more.  But things changed when I borrowed a 2.12. The pickup was sublime. I started timing better as I realised I didn't have to swing as hard as before because of the extra power.  The only downside was I got tired easily and I had some wrist pain (I am still recovering from a broken wrist).  My current bat is 2.09.

My preferred weight is 2-12. I arrived at this weight after trial-and-error over many matches and seasons. I used to play with lighter bats but they didn't work for me. I used a heavy 2-13 bat in nets one season and just fell in love with it. I ultimately landed at 2-12. I open, and I can cut/pull at that weight and driving is effortless.

I use 2-8 and always go for dead weight of 2-8 and if pick is good, it is a bonus, if pickup is bad, I try to reduce weight little more by removing stickers, toe guard, using lighter grip etc. I found that good pickup for heavier bats only matters/useful for straight bat shots, but for horizontal bat shots, dead weight always comes into play no matter how good the pickup is (This last statement should be a new post in itself to discuss further I think). I would think the suggestion should always be "use the heaviest you can" and not "use lightest you can" as if you can wield a heavier bat, you will definitely get more output from your shots, all else being same. Also, use heaviest bat you can only means the heaviest bat with which you can play all shots freely for the bowling speeds you play in your league. Doesn't mean just what you can lift and do a few shadow practice shots and feel ok..

Lastly why do i use 2-8? - my thin arms cant wield anything more than that.. if i had strong arms, i would definitely use the likes of GN 50+ at 2-15..

I use both lighter and heavier bat but it depends on the game situation. I use lighter bat because I am a wrist player. I just time the ball and don't try to overpower the bowler in the beginning but once I settle down and need to go big, I use heavier bat for more power.

Title: Re: Why do you use the weight you do...?

I use light bats around 2lb 8 purely as I'm not the strongest and wristy so hand speed and being able to flick my wrists on the ball is everything. However if I pick up a heavier bat I can use anything really as long as it feels light, so if I pick up a 3lb bat and get used to that weight in my hands, I can then use anything below 3lb easily enough short term
