Title: Old bats
Post by: thedon on May 26, 2017, 10:17:38 AM
I've been using my previous  bat, which is approx 10 years old. The thing is it used to be a gun....nowadays the middle is okish...seems small, but compared to my newer bat, it seems vastly inferior. Is this just a mental thing, or can bats just die?

Bats do die
But  compared to 10 years ago modern bats are miles apart when it comes to ping

I don't think they are that far apart. The best pinging bat I've ever used was a Gunn & Moore Purist, and that's about as far removed from the big edged modern bats as you can get!

Absolutely, old bats can definitely die but there was nothing wrong with the ping on them 10 years ago - I maintain my 2005 Kahuna was the pingiest bat that has ever existed.

How much have you used it since bringing it out again @thedon ? I'm sure I've heard that the willow can relax over time, almost de-knocking in itself. Maybe some mallet loving could bring it back to life?

@edge I've used it about 3 or 4 times. Maybe the middle is just smaller than my newer bat?

Yeah , bats can definitely die . Got me thinking about the cricket museum at kingsgrove i walk past to go to the bowling machines . Ive always just thought of it as a museum,  but now that i think of it as a place where bats go to die , it must either be a bat-nursing-home or bat-morgue.   ;) :D

Neither , its a place where bats are celebrated & shown how they have changed over the years . Plus who else but harry would dedicate a room for people to come & experience it , the  really good stuff he hides in his boardroom & closet.

Everything you say is true. Obviously attempted humour in text/my post didn't come through or else you wouldnt have felt a need for clarifying response.

My Newbery series one really dipped in performance over the years, now replaced with an M&H

I've had the opposite experience. I bought a Charlie French around 2008. Haven't used it much over the years but it's clearly opened up and has an amazing middle. Currently being used by my brother when he does play. I guess it depends on how you store an d look after the bat.

PS always have a scuff sheet and try an store my bats in bat covers.
