Title: Supposed Pro Bat - back from the dead
Post by: WalkingWicket37 on June 28, 2017, 08:34:47 PM
Now a brief bit of history on this one. It belongs to a teammate who works in financial services, and he used to be friendly with a few of the Hampshire boys.
This bat was supposedly sourced from Chris Tremlett while he was at Surrey. It has RHB written on the handle so may have been one of Rory Hamilton Brown's (equally it could be any old bat, as I have now way of verifying).

Anyway, it's been in my mate's possession for a few years and has had a lot of use! It arrived to me in this state:

First things first I decided to glue the (rather extensive) damage.
My theory was to get the bat into one piece again, then try sanding it down.

The middle had delaminated.
Both edges were cracked.
The toe has split.

After a few rounds of gluing, I had the bat back together and all the delimitation repaired.

(http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb450/CPye061194/20170622_180504_zpseavo0qxt.jpg) (http://s1206.photobucket.com/user/CPye061194/media/20170622_180504_zpseavo0qxt.jpg.html)

I then gave it a quick rub down with white spirit to remove the remains of fibreglass tape.

Once it was nearly clean, I gave the whole bat a sand.

(http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb450/CPye061194/20170622_191347_zpsoveticym.jpg) (http://s1206.photobucket.com/user/CPye061194/media/20170622_191347_zpsoveticym.jpg.html)

The delimitation to the middle of the bat was now solid, but there were a few areas that needed some attention.
I packed these with glue and used fibreglass tape as a clamp.

And finally, once repaired I was asked to apply some genuine Newbery stickers, so the bat matched the rest of his kit!

I'll admit this wasn't the best looking repair in the world, but considering the condition I received the bat in I'm rather pleased I managed to save it.
The owner is very attached to it, and has clearly used it a lot. Hopefully this will prolong it's life for a couple more seasons for him  :)

Wow, fabulous job. How does it tap?

If you don't mind me asking, where did you source those Newbery Uzi stickers? Thank you.

This post actually made me sad.. I will NEVER score enough runs to actually get one of my bats to look like that

It is about the use - you can actually reach to this point if you persist with one.

Maybe I need to contact someone to confiscate all of your bat except one? ;P

He will, if he uses same bats against all balls...

my username is more of a goal.. i mean look at the bat in these pics - even the shoulder area has extensive surface cracking!

Another season of use and abuse down and this bat is in my possession once again, this time with a rather nasty split down a shoulder.

I'll get some pictures tonight and update as I go, but I fear it may have got to a stage beyond repair!  :(

you get my drift.

youre far too nice to be one of those people.

Okay so here it is, back with me again for another possible repair job.

I'll upload these in the sequence of events as I did things, so you can discover things as I did!
As you can see it's had some more use, it's definitely had a few runs through it!

Unfortunately there's a split through the toe that runs up the back

The slice seems to have opened around the hands

And there's a split through one of the shoulders

To see how bad the damage was I removed the binding from the handle.

It's not good news, as one of the tabs/ears/lugs (delete as applicable) has seemingly shattered

Removing the binding has given another potential clue to the bat's original identity (well, maker at least)

And now as far as I've got. As the toe has split I decided to remove the scuff sheet to see how bad the blade was.

The heartwood is looking like crazy paving with cracks and wobbly bits of willow

There appears to be some delimitation in the middle (not seen in the photo), and there's a corner fallen off!

All in all this one may be beyond repair now.
I'll speak to the owner tonight about how (or if) he wants me to proceed, and update this thread when I know what's happening
