Title: I'm never going to lend a bat again!
Post by: WalkingWicket37 on August 31, 2017, 09:22:08 PM
I may be overreacting here, but this has really wound me up!

I was repairing a teammates Salix for him, and as he only owns one bat (weirdo) he had to borrow one while I had it.

Being the mug I am, I let him borrow one of my Hunts County bats so he wasn't left without one. The alarm bells started ringing when he took it out of the bat sleeve, and handed that back to me. I let it slide and assumed his bag must have had a padded sleeve or something.

Anyway, long story cut short I returned the bat to him and I received my bat back. I was assured the bat was looked after as if it was his own (remember I was repairing his Salix) and it was "still in great condition"

Anyway, I received it back looking like this:

Now the marks on the edge I can accept as these can happen through use.

What has really pissed me off is the white paint down the back! How did this happen? Why did he let it happen to a borrowed bat?
If he'd admitted it was in a state I wouldn't have been too upset, but the fact I was told it had been looked after and was still in good condition has really annoyed me.

Am I overreacting, or is it justified I want to rip the blokes throat out and I'll never lend anyone kit ever again?

No easter eggs, it's a birthday cake for my Mum (her birthday is tomorrow).
As for the coke and Irn Bru in the footwell, that was on offer in Sainsbury's lol

White paint could have been from grounding the bat when running between wickets? Could be the paint for the crease lines that have went onto the back, but I would be a bit annoyed if a bat I lent out came back in that condition... :-[

The bats a write off.... use it to bludgeon him to death and then send it to me, I'll get rid of the evidence... :-)

I lent out one of my affinity's and thankfully it came back in the same condition it was when I lent it. Even better, it was handed back the day after his last game of the season. even so, I have removed the scuff, sanded and oiled. The grip has been washed and reapplied and it will re-scuffed in a few weeks.
I'm sure with your talent/knowledge all evidence of his neglect can be removed and the bat returned to its former glory. I think you should have insisted on him keeping it in the padded cover though.

Give it  the bat  a light rub with a cloth and a dab of white spirit to remove the paint and dirt.

At least they used the correct side of the bat! :)

What is that!
Did he smack a pole with it or something?

No one will ever take as much care as you do, because they aren't you and they haven't invested into the product you lend them, be it financially or emotionally. I let people use an older bat that's still decent l, but never one of my current ones

Well I was so upset by the condition my bat was returned in, there was only one rational thing to do...

I've removed all the stickers and given it a proper clean up.
Here it is as at now, after a rough sand all over to get the willow back to one colour.

It looks much better now it isn't covered in paint, doesn't it!  :D

Cheers Alan

Those picture were taken after I finished the rough sand to get it back to one colour.
I've still got to steam out the dents, glue a few cracks and give it a fine sanding by hand.

I'm hoping to get this and another little project I've got ongoing finished this weekend, so hopefully pictures of it when do ished will follow :)
