Title: BBL 2017-2018
Post by: csnew on December 18, 2017, 07:53:10 PM
Time to watch some proper cricket after the ashes  ;)

Great competition over the festive period. Shame there aren’t many international stars this year, I’m sure some of the franchises tried to sign stokes

Englishman abroad....

Roy and Billings - Sydney Sixers
Butler - Sydney Thunder
Willey - Perth
Mills - Hobart
KP and Wright - Melbourne Stars

And also Jofra Archer from Sussex is at Hobart which will be interesting to see.

Im tipping Archer as the next top class seamer in the england test team. Watched him a few times and was impressive. And he bats well. Not sure when he qualifies

Surprised not to see Bell back at Perth after opening the batting in a winning side last year

Hard to deny he looks a quality bowler, but doesn't qualify until 2023!

Being a Hobart local I'm hoping to see mills/archer perform exceptionally well...the list is one of the weaker in the competition and despite practice game victories against Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers I wouldn't say I'm confident

There is this team which has signed two Pakistani spinners, not sure why they signed Yasir Shah in particular..

Other Overseas signings...

Dwayne Bravo and Mohammad Nabi - Melbourne Renegades
Colin Ingram and Rashid Khan - Adelaide
Shadab Khan and Brendon McCullum - Brisbane
Mitchell McClenaghan - Sydney Thunder

Should be a good one, always enjoy the BBL. Shame it's on BT.

Pretty hard to get motivated watching a bunch of fringe first class players.

2 years ago he had the best season, leading wicket taker i think, last season ... not so great i think .. shame i think he is  a very good t20 bowler , but you have to make the most of your 2 overseas signings , as Adelaide strikers have lost a few key players this year

I think that's why most people have them, as a grip locator rather than anything else. You'd need a hell of a lot of weight to really do anything, and when it's on the same side of the pivot as the rest of the bat is it really a counterbalance anyway?

Reading the racing post at work now and reading that the brand name is the name of the bloodstock company he owns! And that particular bat he was using today is named after his favourite racehorse!

Old Powerspot (or what at least looks like one) being used by Ingram for the Strikers.  Definitely look like a lot smaller piece of willow.

Also on the evidence of some shots the ball not flying quite as far.... well from what I have seen.

Title: Re: BBL 2017-2018

Got to say though, some of it might be because he's not actually bowling THAT fast?

Doesn't look any quicker than most, and the speed gun is reading the same. Seems to be in the low 140s, rather than the late 140s / early 150s, which is where he was a couple of years ago.

As we've heard 10,000,000 times, it's all about pace in Australia...... blah blah blah.

I think the IPL auction could be very interesting - lots of new up and coming players could be up for auction eg. Lewis, Short, Archer etc...

Then you have a few very good players eg. Gambhir, Rashid Khan, Lynn. that haven't been retained where the teams could RTM but they only have a number of those they can use etc...

That should never have been out, he did change his line slightly while running but noway is he trying to obstruct that throw

Alex Ross shouldn't have been given out if you see the angle the ball was thrown from He's actually running out of the line of the ball, shocking decision !!

He might be a bit of a c*ck, but I bloody love watching him play. Such a shame that it all happened as it did, could've gone down as one of the true greatest - clearly hasn't lost it!

There is a great video on the Barmy Army facebook page of Boycott talking about KP, you have to listen to a bitter Swann calling him a C***T a lot before you get Boycott's excellent review but well worth a watch.

Boycott basically saying that England cricket have been robbed of one of it's greatest talents because nobody at the ECB was strong/brave enough to manage him and make him and his views feel part of the team.

Literally could not agree more. If he was an Aussie he'd have broken all kinds of records by now.

Could he be managed? a monumental ego as well as a monumental talent, why should a captain and coach continually have to pussy-foot around him and pander to his whims?

Anecdotally he's been disliked at every club he's played at - he's good, but he's not Bradman. Bravo to England for standing up to self-centred pr*cks I say!

(granted I am sitting on the fence a little here  :D)

Yep @DorsetDan  - but how many of the other supposed big egos have fallen out with many teammates in many different sides. How many have attempted to influence the sacking of their coach and how many have attempted to subvert their own captain by colluding with the opposition?

I'm not saying he's the only ego, but he seems to have been the most disruptive I can remember with little respect for anyone but himself - I just don't see why management and coaches should have to put up with it to such a degree - a tolerance for some prima-donna behaviour yes, but ultimately you've got to knuckle down and get on with it for team and for country.

Sounds like many of the players in the sides I play against.

I have always loved the profile used by KP...seems perfect for a tall guy and dont look too heavy. Anybody has more insights into KP's bat profile?

Almost a chicken and egg scenario. Which came first - poor management or poor behaviour?

One thing is for certain - England have never replaced him in the middle order. I would still back him to get in the Test team now based on ability - and he has missed out on what should have been a fruitful last few years of his Test career.

The best batsman I have seen in an England shirt without doubt.

From my point of view as a captain at amateur level you do have to put up with attitudes and egos (usually unwarranted) from players to get your best team on the field but there comes a point when enough is enough.

Swann's hatred might be stemmed from KP getting picked in the IPL whilst swann went unsold. How things change now - england management are happy for players to miss england matches (e.g. Morgan) and go off to the IPL. Strauss had a very different opinion when he was captain about it all.

What has happened to Tymal Mills?
He went from doing well in T20Is, to getting pumped round every game in the BBL

People have seen his slower balls enough and figured him out, and Aussie pitches maybe don't suit him so much?

He was never a prodigious wicket taker even in local cricket. T  has never been able to swing or seam the ball. Great lad though.

His reputation increased in size when he bowled that one good ball to Gayle!
That ball was a very decent ball but nothing spectacular! It was the second over and I suspect Gayle hadn't got his eye in.
But the ball looked better as Gayle moved slightly one way and free up his shot but misjudged it.

So sometimes a bowlers reputation changes with one over! (or one ball!)

I call it the Jade Dernbach Effect - it's when you burst onto the seen with pace and all sorts of variations and do well because no one has seen you before but then suddenly everyone gets used to the variations and you go round the park.

Not actually watched all that much of Mills, but from what I have seen he seems overly dependent on the slower ball? In which case it's a classic case, there's been plenty of examples of bowlers with a good slower ball and not a lot else who are pretty successful until batsmen catch on to it, then get pummelled. Has he been doing that badly in the BBL?

What i meant is even with the knowledge of who makes Icon bats, there's no way to know if D'Arcy Short uses one, or anything else with stickers.

One of the highlights of the season might be how good Brendon McCullum has been with his commentary. Hire him full time for next season and we can finally get rid of Mark Waugh!

I like Mark Waugh, he's hilariously inept. An actual selector who knows fudge all about any of the players.

The selectors have made this final a farce. Only allowing certain players from the Aus side to be released. They’ve pretty much influenced the key games - e.g White was not released form the semis
