Hi all,

my dad reckons he has a drawknife somewhere and i have an electric sharpener. Is that about all i need? Also does anyone have a travisher they could sell? i havent been able to find any cheapish ones. do i really need one?
thanks in advance,
Alex

You will need very coarse sand paper for the shoulders, i have found as my drawknife and spokeshave skills are very basic!
-
What i have used..plane,spokeshave and rasp..sandpaper and a study workbench is vital!
check out my post on it all, but i am no way an expert
-
thanks, i forgot to mention sandpaper, my dads got loads of it. he was into woodwork a while ago cos he got a lathe for free. now his tools will be mine :) yeh got a workbench fixed to wall above garage. what would the rasp be for? ill be starting off with part mades btw.

You need a vice too
Yeah.. although i got a b&d workbench for about £70 and i put about 6 bricks on the footrest and that seems to do the trick
-
and since we are on this topic is anyone selling clefts?
-
H4L does them £50 posted for low grade.

They are well worth the money aswell, top quality
-
i can supply partmades
handled and pressed
-
i have a few vices aswell just forgot about them :-[
h4l, what is the lowest e.w grade you sell, how much? thanks
also would the tools i linked to be suitable for the job?
-
Rasp file would be for the handle, i find them easy to use and quite easy to get an oval shape on the handle.
You would do very well to get a travisher at a very cheap price. Try G and M tools though. They do one for about £40 i think.
I dont think the plane would be suitable. Have a look at Stanley planes on ebay. Or generally they're easy to pick up at a local market. Got mine for a fiver and works a treat!

How essential is a drawknife? Because i cant get the hang of it!

Pics of my 2nd attempt are now on my topic, if that helps?

-
thanks h4l, i may have an order for you in the near future. my half term starts in a weeks time and im hoping to get a bat done then.
thanks gj, i didnt realise a rasp was a rasp FILE if that makes sense. my dad has tonnes of them so that should be o.k.

Thanks, what tool that you used gets the most of wood off the bat? What do you use for shaping the back and spine?
-
i mainly use a drawknife for shaping the handle and pulling weight from the back ,its not an easy tool to master , and it must razor sharp.
-
I nearly lost a toe first time I had a crack with my drawknife!
-
How about any of these?

Plane (takes me ages but it's ok, just takes a bit of adjusting until you find a correct angle on the blade)
-
Nice, shall start on another cleft once it arrives from Matt at H4L!

these o.k?
