Post by: petehosk on February 08, 2010, 09:41:47 AM
Anyone else just been watching Steyn bowling at his best??
He just took 7 for 51.
Since Tea he took 5 wickets for 3 runs!!

Awsome spell! Phew!

Blimey, I left for work and he had 2 off 14 overs, and Parnell had just got Sehwag in ridiculous fashion. Whats been going on???

Very good swing and reverse swing bowling from Steyn. Mind you what Vijay and Saha where doing shouldering arms, is anyone's guess!!!

I woke up hoping to watch Sachin bat, gutted when I realized that he had come and gone.Decided to take the dog for a good walk, came back in and was horrified to see Sehwag batting for the second time.Cant believe how deadly Steyn is on a subcontinental wicket!!! Awesome stuff!!!

India had to follow on. Currently Morkel got Gambhir for a duck. And now Steyn has just taken Sehwag!
24 for 2! And Steyn is pure joy to watch! Could be an interesting contest between the best batsman in the World (imo) and the best bowler!

PM7 - looks like you will get your chance to watch the little master bat this morning afterall!!

I can't believe the Saffa's have run through the Indians like that...

Being one Tendulkar's biggest fan, even I can't see him digging India out of this hole.

The guy who chose Saha as backup batsman should also get shot. Where the hell is Kolhi?
Title: Re: STEYN...... 7 for 51!!!
Post by: petehosk on February 08, 2010, 10:37:54 AM
To be fair, Morkel is on good form, and Steyn is almost unplayable some of the time!
The ball he got Tendulkar out with in the first innings was an absolutely jaffa! Although there have been a couple of wickets to slightly rash shots! India have a lot of rebuilding to do now. But even with the top notch batsmen they have, I can't imagine them doing anything more than putting up a fight!! If India get a draw out of this, then it will be a miracle!

Soth Africa do have some VERY good batsmen, but in my opinion India have the best batting line-up out of any team! But there are a couple missing in this test, so slightly weakened! But the big difference with South Africa is their bowling! IMO they are far superior to the India bowlers, although Khan is excellent when he fires! I rate the Indian spinners seperior to SA spinners, but they lack the pace bowlers!

Its actually just as well that India DON'T have that high level of pace bowlers, otherwise they would be almost unbeatable when you consider their batting attack as well!

Spot on Pete, The top heavy Indian batting line up is definately weakened in this match  but the full strength one is awesome. All the Indian batsmen have historically struggled against the swinging ball and have been exposed especially in England and NZ but Steyn is virtually unplayable today.Apart from Zaheer none of the Indian bowlers look threatening.

PM7 - Tendulkar, Dravid , Laxman and Ganguly have brilliant records in England. They struggle in South Africa and New Zealand.

Leroy - South Africa need to win the series to regain the world number 1.

saha only got a game as rohit got injured in a warm-up - it was like manou at edgbaston, an unavoidable selection as the back-up wk was the only fit guy with kit...

I saw this pic on cricinfo... http://www.cricinfo.com/indvrsa2010/content/image/447432.html?page=1

Amit Mishra is at no fault for being cleaned up by Steyn - many better batters have suffered that fate, but are these some of the worst stickers on a bat you have seen? (the bat itself looks decent enough)

they are not the best. Maybe he is confused about this line of work- you would have to be careful using that bat if you were walking home in the dark on a shady street corner! you could get arrested!

Tea out in Nagpur and the Saffa's need 4 more wickets to win. The Little Master made yet another 100 his 46th in test matches and 91st in international cricket... amazing. I would love to see him make 100 international 100's...

Dhoni record as captain is also pretty special, it looks as this is going to be his first defeat as a test match captain...

I really though they would make the saffas bat again!
The tail wagging, and Tendulkars century were perhaps the only positives for India.

watching harris bowl is actually like watching paint dry , how can he be playing internation level?? may seem im being a little too critical but he just stayed over the wicket and bowled at the batsmans pads!

it was also a real thrashing for the windies today aus won with 141 balls left and with a 8 wicket win . bowled winding out in 40 overs

I thought the Saffa's would have to bat again too, I also thought the Saffa's bowling unit would have tired a bit - I am pretty surprised, but it shows for all the talent the Indian batting can still be brittle. Mind you, other than an inform KP, I am not sure how many of our batters would get in the Indian team...

Harris does a job and he is the best they have, so while he is no genius you need a spinner in India and one who can work within his limitations is valuable.

Poor old Gayle was out first ball of the match, things never improved from there for the WIndies...

I also don't think you can bowl like that without chucking it (which is a bit more contraversial) I have faced a few bowlers who have tried to bowl the "frog in a blender style" and I am not sure how you can do it with a straight arm...

great second image! and i dident realise he quit , and in my opinion , i think duminy is more of a threat than harris , ( others may disagree )..i just think in a test match you need a spinner who could win you a test match - e.g swann , harbajan , vettori , mendis , murali...i can only ever see harris getting wickets if the batsman makes a mistake..
Title: Re: STEYN...... 7 for 51!!!
Post by: Buzz on February 09, 2010, 11:59:55 AM
I agree with you on both counts... the phrase the "experts" use is the ability to beat the bat on both edges - which all the above can do.
The Aussie step and fetch it bowler is doing really well at the moment as well, I have no idea how - he is in the same bracket as Harris.

My off-spin bowling is fantastic at beating both edges, finding the middle and being smashed miles...!!!

i disagree

harris is a really intelligent bowler he will force the batsman into a mistake and this which makes a good bowler its called pressure. i no stats aint the thing to  look at but if you do he is up there with most of them except murali swann and harbajan . he is a very intelligent bowler and you need that in your teams .

I think we agree, he works within his limitations, which is invaluable.

Out of interest, do you think he is a better bowler than Ashley Giles was or Nathan Hauritz is?

fair enough , everyone is entitled to there own opinion pal.....

and i dont think he is a better bowler than hauritz , he has improved alot and is doing quite well for the aussies......hard to say about giles really....suppose its a matter of opinion...i would prefer have giles in my side though.

Very poor top order batting effort in both innings by the Indians. Apart from Sehwag, Badrinath and Sachin(one innings each) there where 9 failures from the top 6. I'm not including Saha as I see him as a number 8.

With regard to Paul Harris, he was fortunate that Morkel removed Gambhir early in each innings. Otherwise he's tactic off bowling 10 ft outside leg would've been harder to execute.

India badly missed a left hander in the middle order as well. The procession of right handers made it easier for Harris. The absence of VVS Laxman was a big loss also. He's a master of playing against the spin (just ask Shane Warne!!!)

Harbhajan Singh is no longer a match winning spinner. He's lost his drift and dip. He's only in the side because of his record.

Giles nor Harris are great spinners, but have made the best of their very limited talents. If you want to be a great left arm spinner, look no futher then Bishan Bedi - the best of them all.

Thankfully India  has added some extra batting cover for the 2nd Test. Raina, a left hander, and Karthik.

I'm not making any excuses , India where mauled.

Karthik betted so well in the South v West Zone game but who would have thought Pathan could hit 200 to win it..... now there's a player who is in form and has some serious luck running for him.

I think I would have a heart attack if I saw Yusuf playing test cricket.. Irfan on the other hand, I can't say it enough time hes needs to be in all 3 formats of the game..
Title: Re: STEYN...... 7 for 51!!!

Plus the 5-6 times Yusuf was dropped might have something to do with that double ton..
Title: Re: STEYN...... 7 for 51!!!
Post by: Jeet on February 09, 2010, 07:32:41 PM
Getting dropped is something Yusuf Pathan can't control. He gave the opposition the chances but they declined to take them.

With regards to Dinesh Karthik, he's all ways been a run machine in domestic first class cricket. In Test cricket, unless he's opening, he's been very poor. I don't see him opening the batting any time soon with Viru and Gambhir around.

For the 2nd Test I think M Vijay should be dropped for Laxman(he has to be fit!). Be all accounts, Eden Gardens will be a dust bowl and Laxman is the master of Eden Gardens. Laxman should bat at 3 and Raina should debut at 6. Raina will break up the endless amount of right handers India have at present.

I've got nothing against M Vijay, but he all ways gets starts, then gets out.

My side would be:
1. Gambhir
2. Sehwag
3. Laxman
4. Sachin
5. Badrinath
6. Raina (bowls useful offies)
7. Dhoni
8. Harbhajan (last chance and good record at Eden Gardens
9. Zaheer
10. Sreesanth/Ishant (both are rubbish atm, neither should be near Test side)
11. Ojha (Mishra's lack of commitment with the bat means he gets dropped).

Yes, I agree Yusuf can't help being dropped.. I was saying hard to think SA players would drop him 5-6 times.. Thats for people who want to see him in the Test team after 1 good outing..

I would put Kohli instead of Bardinath.. Just like his style better and think when a player is performing at such high level should be allowed to bat every chance possible until he proves otherwise..
Title: Re: STEYN...... 7 for 51!!!
Post by: Jeet on February 09, 2010, 11:24:50 PM
Sorry CD, but Badrinath has worked so hard for his opportunity(6000 first class runs @ 58 and has waited 5 years to earn his Test cap ) and he deserves his chance. Only way Kolhi would play is if he was chosen ahead of Raina.

Also, say if VVS is ruled out again, playing Virat has no logic. India can't play a line-up of all stroke makers, we need players like Badrinath - he's the closest to a clone of Dravid, only other would be Pujara, but Gujarat players never get picked!!!

Jeet agree with you buddy.. Just like Kohil better.. I hope Badri plays a gem at the Garden..

Man if I see the selectors or Dhoni I think I would smack them and say that's for not picking Irfan..

A left handed batsman and a bowler who can swing with the best of them surely has no place in the team... >:o

These bowling stats have made my day

P Harris 43.4 3 159 1

Only 3 maidens in 43 overs and considering his role is a holding bowler then he aint doing his job - mind you, India are bating rather well!
Crap bowler, crap action and crap figures - not one of the best 10 bowlers in the world! Rant over.....for now :)

I saw him bowl round the wicket yesterday ONCE and he got a wicket almost immediately. Makes no sense, he just bowls darts outside leg stump, and then postures like he is Curtley ambrose or someone!

You already qualify for the over 50's dont you?
Im would prefer to watch, as a spectator, a spinner who spins the ball, gives a lot of variation and genuinely tries to get a batsmen out (not saying that harris doesn't try, but he is more of an attritional bowler) - it seems to get wickets but i just hate watching it.

Couldn't agree more, he lacks the aggression the likes of Warne and Swann have
