Title: GN Pro Performance - shall I keep it?
Post by: Chalkie on February 15, 2018, 09:50:08 PM

So the Gray Nics Pro Performance has arrived. I bought it (from a private seller) having been told that despite the shorter blade it was still SH length overall – and the GN catalogue actually says it is a SH bat – whereas in reality it is 1 inch shorter overall so they really should call it an SB.

So was I misinformed/misled or am I just a muppet, will leave that up to you, but no need to post here….

Anyway, it is an absolute cracker and I would love to keep it. There are 8 grains that run straight through the toe, and it has a little graping at 6 inches up. What it doesn’t have in length it makes up elsewhere - Max edge is 49mm, with 66mm spine (some concaving), and 24-26mm toe, it is even 108mm wide, but weighs just 2'10.4 with one grip and scuff. The handle isn’t the thickest (binding not tape) and doesn’t really have a knob, but that is good as I may be able to hold it right at the top. Taps up lovely (especially off the graping) and the pickup is good.

Seller reckoned it was destined for Luke Wright before the rule change (so maybe there is an upside to the new laws) – but thought he stopped using GN a couple of years ago, and there is no sign of a sharpie on the toe so that can’t be right…. Has a V stamp on one shoulder, nothing on the other, could that mean it’s UK made?

However, I am 6'2 and stand fairly tall when batting, so really not sure whether it will work for me. As I see it I have the following options:

1. Stop worrying and just have a go at using it
2. Return to the seller and seek a refund. A lot of hassle and seems a pity to do this.
3. Send it to GN to get a longer handle fitted - probably cost around £50, likely to add a couple of oz.
4. Have a handle cap/extension fitted - apparently this is a thing.... (Jake had one fitted, anyone else tried this)
5. Or I sell it on.....

Option 1 mate. Give it a go as is, you might find it works and you like it, if not you’ll be able to sell it on for more of less what you paid for it.

You never know, you may end up finding the setup more suited to you.

It looks a lovely bat but  think  at your height and with your stance it may not be suitable especially against the fast Yorker .

Here are a few questions...

Where on the handle do you hold the bat?
Are you an avid bat tapper or do you stand tall at the crease?
Where on the bat do you usually hit the ball?
Does the bat feel good in your hands?

To be honest it looks a magnificent bat.
I would have the same issue as you with a bat like this.
But it is a magnificent bat...!

Hold the bat towards the top if the handle and imagine pulling the ball for six.
How does it feel?

Buy some matching softs and away you go.

Or stick a toe guard on and that may give you enough extra bat length.

Hmm,bit tricky. There might always be a doubt it's not quite right and that might nag away.

On the basis the weight is the right one for you, or near enough, I think I would also keep hold of it.

Never heard of a handle extension myself so not sure how that works, but in the basis you like it and could cope with maybe one more ounce or two I would send it to gray nics for a longer  handle

However if the weight pushes over to 'too heavy' get a refund or sell it

I'm not a believer myself a bat too heavy in the beggining will ever change, as in, do you ever really get used to it...

It's not the first 20 runs its the next 30 when the bat weight will make a difference.

Option 3: Send it to GN for longer handle & to keep the original stickers. The bat looks great and not too heavy with these specs.

Probably swap it with someone else. I’m sure someone will offer you something in your requirements

Can’t go wrong for £215 though given how much they retail for normally

I'd get it rehandled I reckon, probably not the ideal option but then would be hard not to use that!

Thanks for your comments guys.

@Buzz - answers below

Here are a few questions...

Where on the handle do you hold the bat?  - Normally near the top (top hand resting against the bottom of the knob)
Are you an avid bat tapper or do you stand tall at the crease? - don’t tap much, tend to stand fairly tall
Where on the bat do you usually hit the ball? - usually quite high, find the higher middle bats better for me
Does the bat feel good in your hands? - feels very nice

To be honest it looks a magnificent bat. - it is very nice
I would have the same issue as you with a bat like this.
But it is a magnificent bat...!

Hold the bat towards the top if the handle and imagine pulling the ball for six.
How does it feel? - Unusual  ;)  seriously it feels pretty easy

Buy some matching softs and away you go. Got some Predator softs over the winter, so good to go there.

Or stick a toe guard on and that may give you enough extra bat length. - just how thick can a guard be under the regs  ;)

Too manly for you @seniormoment - it's a gargantuan 2.10.4 - that's like 2 of your normal bats :)

A refurb from Gray Nicolls will cost you between £29.99 and £54.99 (depending what you have done) ;)

Yes me

Don't be greedy Alan, you have 2 already!  ;)

Can only comment on the pro performance have two both  have  nice grains and excellent ping.

Mine are just over 2lb 6 ounce a little concaving and a mid balance point to me they don't feel heavy or light
Don't notice the size difference  also find that the shorter blade when you are not tall is an advantage when hitting through the line of the ball.

Im 6ft 3in , bat with a tall stance (non bat tapper) and use shorter bats ie/c.a's and short handle bats with the knob chopped off ( making them super short handles). I hold my top hand right at the top ....on the handles i chop the knob off I make a thin counterbalance which acts to prevent the hand slipping off the end .
If someone my height can feel comfortable doing this then there's a chance you can do the same too.
Oh , btw , I dont get bowled by yorkers any more than anyone else /dont feel like i have to stoop to dig them out etc .
Worst case scenario....widen your stance a tiny bit to be a fraction closer to the ground !  :D

Post it for sale and see how many low ball offers will come.. sell it for original price paid or get a longer handle fixed.
