Title: Elbow/forearm bruising
Post by: mohawks94 on March 11, 2018, 08:31:51 PM
Last weekend I got hit in my follow through after bowling, ball got nailed back at me like a tracer bullet. All I had time to do was stick an arm across my chest to protect my ribs, but if I'd ducked I would have been in serious trouble so I've got off lightly really, no break but hefty swelling and bruising from wrist to elbow.

Has anyone had anything similar before? A week on I've still got pain when flexing my wrist forwards or backwards and struggle to grip for sustained periods- not much good as a teacher with already dubious handwriting! I've spent 3 days icing it, ibuprofen and paracetamol for a few days, compression support most of the week and ice applied straight after the impact. I've been suggested arnica bit its probably too late to stop the bruising now. I'm hopeful of being back in full training in a couple of weeks, depending on how my course is going, as I want to train as much as possible before season starts as pre-injury I was netting 3 times a week.

Not on the arm but I took a serious blow to the ankle once, still have a crater in my leg!  I think you may have to just wait it out sadly!

The way my arm swelled, I had a massive swelling on my 'lateral epicondyle' which is the bit of your elbow that is affected by tennis elbow, with a dent in it where the ball hit with little cuts from the seam.

I will try to get a picture up from Monday morning when I had my x-ray. Took approx 30 seconds of my minor injuries appointment to be sent to x-ray.

When I was hit on the forearm the bruises took 4 weeks to go as they healed they changed colour from purple to black to red the bruise seemed to work its way downwards as it healed.
Couldn't grip without pain till the bruises went.

Mine are a bit blue/purple around the original impact, yellower up around my elbow and down to just above my wrist.

I learnt what its like to be a non spinning spinner when I tried to bowl after initial icing, bowled 4 balls, one beaut to square up a guy who too scores for the club in the prem last season, then 3 leg side full tosses with no revs at all as I couldn't grip it.

Ouch! I've managed to avoid getting hit so far - does it hurt as much as it sounds?

Its not too late to use Hirudoid ....way better than arnica . It helps with the pain in older/established swollen or bruised injuries , not just reducing bruising in fresh injuries .

Very true, I'm definitely lean and light.

It didn't initially, but the pain grew pretty quickly, guess there was some adrenaline going. Lucky one of our girls was staying on to train with the men (she's England senior academy) so the women's coach had the first aid kit there, us lads hadn't brought one so could have been worse.

Good job they were there. I guess you guys have got a first aid kit now then in case it happens again and the Women's Coach isn't there?

First proper net since being injured today. Bowled ok but not as many revs as usual as forearm is still stiff and bruised.
Problems came when batting- hall we use has tennis ball bounce and there was a guy from Ifield, don't know if he's joining us or something, who was bowling some pretty quick bumpers. Swayed away from plenty to keep the arm out the way! Vs the bowling machine I found myself getting leading edges a couple of times, or not being able to adjust as fast as usual and missing/toeing the ball.
All in all was good to be back hitting a ball, but hoping to be 100% for next weekend

We had to call upon Dave and his ice packs again this week, one of the seamers did something to his shoulder and we didn't have supplies.

You would have thought you'd learned!

Ifield, is that the club from the Cheer Up vids on YouTube? Love watching those -if so they have some seriously quick bowlers.

Different club I'm afraid, it's Isfield in the Cheer Up videos.

From memory their bowlers aren't that quick, all come nicely onto the bat rather than hitting the bat hard.
