I know the IPL has had it's issues in the past, but believe me there are far more corrupt tournaments out there than the IPL.

The money around the competition has made it far less appealing to fixers in recent years. Try convincing Mitchell Starc to risk losing his £700,000 payday to throw a few No Balls. Then try convincing Daryl Mitchell to risk his £700 a week  payday to throw a few No Balls. See where you get more success

(names mentioned with no accusations. as far as I am aware, both are clean players. One does reverse it quite a lot though it seems ;) )

Who cares?

I’m with the above. As an aside, how much have sky paid for it ? They seem to be going all out to drum up interest with the adverts etc..

I don’t hear it talked about at our nets, socials or on our ‘chat’ WhatsApp etc so it’s be interesting to know actual viewing figures in the uk for the price sky are paying. Having actual championship games on live or mor women’s games would be a better use of the funds potentially ?

Who cares?

Some of us do.

Just because the majority may not be interested in this tournament. It shoudlnt mean the ones that do have to put up with spam and moaning about it.

There is a solution. Don’t like the ipl. Don’t click on the thread that is about the ipl.

But by all means, if you want a discussion on how it’s a waste of money, no one watches it and sky can spend there money on better coverage of the county championship.
Then make a thread regarding that, and I’m sure many will agree and join in. Me I’d like a work we’re both are televised and can be watched.

There is plenty of room for that thread elsewhere on the forum.

Hyderabad and Tom Moody get their heads screws on correctly, to win these big t20 leagues you need gun bowlers. Sunrisers bowling has everything - Bhuvi is the star bowler for the last two years, Stanlake pure pace, Rashid best spinner around, Shakib legendary all rounder and a decent Indian seamer.

Rajasthan team is unbalanced, too many top order players more capable against seam bowling. Rahane should be batting at 4 as he’s a superb player of spin. Jos should’ve opened with Short.

Big Willey signs for CSK as a replacement for K Jadhav. That makes 12 England players at the IPL.

Having not seen many at the competition in the last few seasons, do Indians rate English T20 players more than the English do, or are they cheap...?

ECB really needs to do something about a cut off point of some kind for players to go there, I'm not a Yorkie by any means but to lose two players in the space of 4/5 days when the season starts on Friday is an absolute farce; shocking treatment as far as the counties are concerned.
Title: Re: IPL 2018 Winner

If Warner was available, Sunrisers would have been massive favourites. They bought really well in the auction. KKR have a very good first XI but if anyone gets injured, then they don't have replacements.
Kings XI need to drop Yuvi to have any chance. Finch should play for them.
Maxi needs to play well for DD to have a chance.
Mumbai have retained their core and will do well as usual.
CSK looks weak. Raina needs to have a special tournament for them to make the playoffs.
Rajasthan look the weakest of all.
RCB need AB and BMac to fire as their bowling is weak. Should chase every game.

My predictions (Will go badly wrong):
Sunrisers, KKR, DD and Kings XI will make the playoffs. And I am going to pick DD to win this year.

Considering the amount of money on the line English players would have to be rated and they are also cheap!! Days when players were purchased on reputation are gone, mostly. Problem with english players is not all are available or were available in past, also some of your players are not that well suited for Indian pitches whereas players from other countries are now playing Big Bash, PSL, IPL, South African and Bangla leagues so they are more developed/used to dead and lively pitches, English players are held back for whatever reason and same for Indian who only play IPL.

In recent years though the English players have commanded some huge fees. I believe Stokes was the biggest overseas purchase last edition. Was Archer (soon to be English) one of, if not the most expensive overseas this year? Mills also commanded a fee of over $1 Million last year. To say the English players are cheap is a little misleading and certainly a trend that is changing, Stokes Buttler Woakes Roy Hales Ali Wood all in the mix this year for starters.

Traditionally they have been cheap but there are exceptions as always, for e.g. KP was not cheap. Yes the reputation is changing and players were purchased because the Indians see them as good players.

Great knock by Billings yesterday, especially as he easily could have lost it when Dhoni got out.

As for KKR they really need to figure out what their side is because Vinay Kumar is awful. When you have India's brightest young stars on the bench that have just won a World Cup it just seems crazy.

Kartik's inexperience as captain also showed hugely yesterday you could see him getting worried and it got to him.

An absolute jaffer from Boult.

Maybe speaking prematurely here but think Rajasthan may struggle this IPL. Just look like they're going to struggle to get the balance of their side right although adding Sodhi should help.

First things first, Tripathi should open with Short, Rahane 3, Samson 4, Stokes should be 5, Buttler 6. Samson and maybe even Rahane demoted if they get off to a flier and Buttler/Stokes promoted.

I worry that Sunrisers batting is a little pedestrian and Warner a big miss.

Opening with Dhawan and Williamson is just not devastating enough IMO. Williamson is a 120 s/r specialist.

Mumbai have a powerpacked side with the Pandya brothers, Lewis, Sharma and gun bowling spearheaded by Bumrah. I fancy Mumbai for this one. Really like the makeup of their side. Should be a classic

I didn't say they would change it... merely pointed out it is an option if you don't want Saha or Williamson to open the batting. As you say getting Hales into the side is tough because 3 out of the 4 overseas are pretty much nailed on to play every game.

Warner would have opened for srh had he been there.

So what would the xi and other 3 overseas had been had that been the case?

If they decide they need hales to open, merely returning to the team make up they planed with Warner would be the way they’d go.

Pretty sure it would have been Williamson dropped for Warner and other 3 overseas the same.

The issue is that Warner was previously SRH Captain, that captaincy then got cascaded down to Williamson thus now making him almost "undroppable"

Rajasthan needs to consider dropping D'Arcy Short, he's totally inept against spin, even clueless against Rana who's just a fill in bowler.

They've got Klassen whom can slot in the middle order and thus allowing Buttler to open. Or alternatively get Archer in

If it was me I'd look to only make one change and that would be Archer for Laughlin. Bolsters the batting a little (which may take some pressure off Short) and arguably strengthens the bowling too. I'm not a big Klaasen fan but believe he scored runs against India before? Rajasthan main issue is not opening with Tripathi IMO. Such a devastating opener last year randomly demoted this year in favour of Rahane who is a perfect 3/4.

Not sure playing with Archer reduces pressure on Short. He's already playing with Stokes and Buttler yet he can't score freely. Klassen can actually play spin

Rajasthan issue it that Unadkat has been crap, the money seems to have gone to his head

I'm not saying it will reduce all the pressure but it adds weight to the batting as Laughlin is a bunny and Archer can hit. Ergo fractionally less pressure on Short to perform. He does need to perform though I certainly agree. Been a tough slog for him this tournament so far (as it has for Chris Lynn to be honest too!).

Unadkat has been largely crap, think he obviously overperformed last year and was overpriced in the auction. Maybe the price tag is weighing on him? Also Rajasthan not really having any spinners doesn't help.

The weird thing is, with all these problems we've "identified" or discussed, I still think there is the makings of a very, very good side there conditions permitting. Should have strived to make Jaipur a road
Title: Re: IPL 2018
Post by: six and out on April 19, 2018, 12:06:48 PM
RR's issues -

Unadkat is bowling shockingly - for whatever reason he has been awful
No wicket taking spin option - both there spinners are very inexperienced
D'arcy Short - simple as that really, if you can't play spin you are not going to get that far in the IPL
Archer's not been fit - remember that Archer has had a side strain from the PSL so i think that's why he hasn't played - when he is fully fit he will definitely start.
Tripathi batting out of position - why is he batting at 5/6 when he scored a ton of runs opening last year?

As you have said there is a makings of a very good team there. For me a would replace Short with Archer, Tripathi then opens with Rahane. I would replace Laughlin with Ish Sodhi (who has just come in as a replacement player) and that helps the lack of experienced spin. Then change one of the Indian spinners for a Indian batter - not sure who though.

Sending your 3 overseas one after the other in the middle order has no logic.

Klaasen was signed as Smith's replacement as he is actually an excellent player if spin. He was the only one of the South African's that could take it to Kuldeep and Chahal when India toured South Africa earlier this year.

Jofra Archer what an incredible talent, potentially a once in a generation player. When you're impressing Australian legend Matthew Hayden, you know you're doing something right. Archer can't play for us for another 4 years, that's a long time...hopefully he doesn't take the t20 path

Klassen got those runs in the rain if I recall. Don’t really judge playing wrist spinners when they can’t grip it. We’ll find out how good he is in a couple of games in sub continent conditions

Didn’t realise dravid wasn’t coach - point taken

Pretty much every year they’ve took the risk on stacking the batting line up and simply hoping to ‘run’ the opposition out the game. Unfortunately it hasn’t worked and they don’t seem to be learning their lesson. They eventually let Gayle go who on the whole was a drain of rescources, but I think this season they couldve probably sacrificed the signing of QdK or one of the many all rounders and instead got just 1 top class bowler and they would’ve stood a better chance.

Which is the opposite to most England plays and why they’d truggle to get a gig.

Anyway.

Also, it's different in elite level sport obviously! With options etc, less room for loyalty and more a cut throat business. In the game that he got 0/24 I think he was the only bowler not to take a wicket. Just all seems very ominous to me and not a player I would continue with

Fair, and I understand the IPL is different to the Village Green!  ;)

Just comes down to whether you want continuity in your team, or a team where everyone is terrified to do anything lest they screw it up and get dropped. There's a balance to be had, and if you're spending that kind of money on a player you really should give them more leeway than 18 balls.

The 93 runs he's gone for have come from 11 overs, and both the most recent two have been in some damn high scoring games.

Everyone is allowed a bad day, if Kohli scores a duck in the next 3 games are you going to say he's washed up and should never be considered again?

Haha!

I understand the notions of continuity, pressure, balance of complacency etc within a team but don't feel Plunkett has done enough to warrant being selected again for the foreseeable. Maybe I was a little harsh saying ever haha

Also, "most recent two have been in some damn high scoring games" - his good performance was in a low scoring game was it not, so it's swings and roundabouts. He hasn't done anything previously in IPL to make me think hes got IT which is where your Kohli comparison falls down somewhat.  Not a fan. Not an elite level IPL player for me.

He's also got a few runs with the bat which has been overlooked in your assessment but yeah. Injury is a moot point. I'm not suggesting bringing Morris into the fold now with an injury. Plus, take a look at his record last year in IPL. He has a reputation and some  relevant form to believe he will succeed at that level

His good (best) performance being his first game, so 3 games back.

Roy has a 90 Hales a 40 plus in his one knock
Archer has bowled well Woakes left out  by RCB   Kholi stated after one loss  his death bowlers were going for to many runs.
Buttler the fourth fastest 50 so far  and  the fastest for his side Stokes  could win  the catch of the series .
Can't think of much else.

We are too quick to judge. It's understandable why Stokes is not replicating last seasons performances. But Archer has been superb. Roy played an amazing innings. Hales got 45 on a difficult surface. And Buttler came to the party last night. Even Plunkett had a great debut, 3 for 17.

Don't mention PLUNKETT :@

Also, Stokes has been the most disappointing IMO haha if taking a good catch is his tournament highlight ffs

The stats kind of show what I'm saying.
Most Runs: No Englishman in top 20.
Buttler (24), Stokes (30), Roy (41), Billings (45),

Most Wickets is a bit better though
Woakes (14), Archer (17), Plunkett (48)

£1.2m was what was paid for him.
158 runs in 8 games - think I’d want a lot more for that amount. No man of the match performances

Yeah I thought he played really well, explosive. Felt for him a little this tournament as he's been shuffled around the order (I expected him to open) so pleased that he has finally impressed with a score. Said it before the tournament started but Mumbai have the best Indian contingent. If they could improve their overseas contingent they would be almost unstoppable. If Lewis catches fire this tournament is theirs for the taking

Why do Delhi keep picking Maxwell and Plunkett. They’ve had mates this season.

At least Maxwell has some sort of track record and the ability to win a game on his own. He may only come off 1 in 10 but at least there is a record of it occasionally coming off. Without sounding like a broken record, Plunkett has been utter, utter garbage.

Williamson is a brilliant cricketer, beautiful batsman to watch.

Do love that in T20 it takes all sorts - not just some massive chaps trying to smash the back off the ball every delivery.  Ball crosses the ropes you get 4 or 6 regardless of whether or not you've used brute force or finesse, so it's good to see different approaches.

Should have put a bet on csk with the other 8 of us up there.

Well batted Watson. Looked awful on 1 off 11 balls. But when you get your eye in, you get your eye in.

Masterclass from Shane Watson there. It did make me laugh he couldn’t run so he just hit boundaries. Reminded me of Saturday league cricket

Superb innings by Watson. Dhoni yet again proves what a great captain he is.

I had SRH from the start, but it just shows you how much experience counts in T20. Chennai won the big and close games when it mattered.

Definitely the best IPL to date.

I generally agree ....but that was a good final , and one of the best limited overs innings ive ever seen by L.B.Watson too.
