Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls: the cricket season is almost upon us!
Last season's thread had plenty of responses, so why not do it again!
Doesn't just have to be batting & bowling targets. Can be fielding, team goals or just pure enjoyment ones!
Feel free to be as brief or as descriptive as you want.
I'll kick it off:
Batting
Saturday: 400 Runs. 3 or more Half-Centuries.
I more than exceeded my expectations last year (scored my 1st hundred!) so this season i'll be looking to improve again. We have 16 games this season and 400 runs is usually the benchmark to get into the top 5 for the Division averages, so that's what i'll be aiming for this year! I would like to score another ton, but more realistically i want to contribute to winning causes more this year as we're missing our best batsman from last season as he's travelling! After starting last season batting 8 and barely bowling, i ended up batting 3 towards the end of the year so would like to carry on either there or at 4.
Sunday: Average 30+
I've rejoined my old Sunday team this season (couldn't play last year due to registration rules which have now changed.) 3 years ago when i started playing cricket this was the first team i ever played for and obviously i was abysmal! Looking forward to seeing how club members who haven't seen me since react to my improvement, our vice skipper/ president opens the batting and is championing the idea of me batting 3/4 like i do for my Saturday side. We only have 12 games this year and i have no idea how many i'll be around for, so not going to set myself a run target. I'd like an average of 30, there's some great tracks and some questionable bowling in the league so you never know!
Bowling
Last year was weird from a bowling perspective, i started the year as an off-spinner, and ended up reverting back to medium pace which bought me a few wickets at the end of the year. I've sorted out my run up this winter, so hopefully will be ok when the season starts to bowl if called upon! Not really fussed how often i bowl now that i bat top order, but would quite like to be reliable enough to bowl a 10 over spell if my skipper needs it. On a Sunday i very much doubt i'll bowl as it's a development side and so pretty much everyone is capable of bowling, so i'm more than content to stand at slip all day!
Fielding
Last year i had by far the best season i've had in the field. Took about 15 catches, pretty much all at Gully. Made it my own position this season by not dropping a single catch in there! the one i did drop all year was at long on. Hoping to continue fielding at gully and take another 10+ catches.
-
As we're promoted, hope to play major part in the bowling department, scoring as much possible in the last 10 overs, didn't took 1 catch last season, nothing came to me 😀, fielding cover, point, long on, long off, deep mid wicket, deep square leg areas, but most important will be for the team to perform well to stay in this league
-
My goals for 2019:
- Play as much cricket as I can with my mates
- Enjoy all the cricket I play, regardless or result or personal performance
- When skipper make sure everyone gets a game/enjoys their day
- Try not to break any fingers this season!
-
as this is my first chance of a full season since 2010, just be able to play a full season - expecting to be put in one of my clubs lower teams this year, so really just enjoy playing and stay out of the way of the chairman at my club - who as i voted for someone else as 3rd team captain seems to have now taken a real dislike to me :)

Pretty much the same as this except my first full season since 2003! also, I've not pissed off my Chairman....yet.

Promotion achieved again for this season so standard should/could be higher. Aiming for 500 league runs and 2 hundreds with ideally a Daddy Ton (150+) keep getting between 105 & 120. Avg above 50
Keeping wise 20+ catches and 5 stumpings is my normal aims.
Overall enjoy my cricket
-
Not been in the UK for a proper summer since 2013 so i want to try and play as many games as i can. I'm in the UK for 9 weeks so realistically between the free Saturdays and Sundays i will get 5/6 games at a massive push and if the wife is understanding enough. I just want to not get myself out playing stupid shots and prove to myself that i can still play a bit.
Fingers crossed.
PS - I'll be splitting some of my time between Bristol and Heacham (west Norfolk) if anyone needs a player when i can't play for my other teams in Herts/Reading. I'm rubbish (3rd/4th team level) but i'm nice and run around a lot!
-
Primary goal with Ansty is promotion back to Div2. With the team we had last season we shouldn't have been relegated but injuries and some horrendous collapses saw us down.
Personal goals are to not be in contention for the duck trophy! I'm aiming for 200 league runs (with a 50) and 25-30 wickets with a first Ansty 5fer. We are playing 40/40 win lose all season so should suit me with players having to attack. Fielding I'd like to match last season, only one drop in the league and 11 catches so aiming for 10 catches and no drops.
Sundays I'm aiming to play as much as possible, get a couple of 50s and a 100.
On top, I want to rediscover my form that saw me put up for Sussex trials by Uni and told to go for Bucks by our overseas. I lost confidence after a netting injury and with inconsistent training never got back to that level last season. I've had a couple of lean seasons with the bat so want to prove to myself what I can do.
-
Main goal for me will be get my hands on our batting trophy (best runs x avg) as I missed out on it last season despite being leading run scorer, so more consistency is the aim - too many cheap dismissals last year. Secondary to that and possibly a bit of a pipe dream... I'm after a double ton.
I'd like to bowl more after getting pressed into service as emergency keeper a lot last season, found it hard to get into rhythm the past couple of seasons.
-
2019 sees me join a new club after 18 years. So main aim is to integrate well into the club and become a valued team member.
Second aim is to score as many runs as I can - a higher division for me than last season so aiming for 350 league runs as a min as well as enjoying my cricket
-
Implement what I've learnt in the 1 to 1 coaching sessions... basically be consistent... play most of my shots along the floor... try and get 3 50s at the very least...
-
Saturdays same as last year pretty much! be involved and eek out as much extra runs/wickets/points as poss
Sundays will be a different challenge as my first season as a captain so just wanting to enjoy it and try to ensure everyone gets a go, without losing my own form!
-
My second child is being born in 6 weeks time, so maybe my target should just be to play as much as responsibilities will allow! With that, last season’s promotion and my general lack of skill in mind, I think my aim is to increase my percentage of not outs (I’ve stood down as opener and moved into the middle order which should help), a couple of 50s and improvement on last season’s average and I’ll be happy.

Good luck with the captaincy!

Good luck with the captaincy!
cheers mate! did it for one game last season but slightly nervous as full time! especially as my first game is against my Saturday club!
-
Try to perform and get my place fixed in top order. Not like I havent performed before but been stuck at bottom position due to poor captaincy. Had word with management and asked for more opportunities. Given opportunity would like to score as my runs as i can hopefully my first 100.
-
700+ league runs
1500 total runs
Not to be a dick Sunday’s (tbf I do this anywya but continue to not be a dick but I did do it for two seaosns before realising Sunday runs mean feck all so it’s judt being a dick) and essentially not bash any bowler around and if the oppo aren’t great.. ‘retire’ by giving it away when on 50 or just let others bat.
Actually bat myself Sunday’s rather than give myself a TFC each week
Not play a single 2020 (nearly always get called up for the semi/finals)
Ensure the Sunday team doesn’t smash any team about the park as no one enjoys that, so never score more than 230 off 40 overs as that’s no fun. Nice 180-220 each week
Not bowl a single ball in games
Not say a single word at, to or about the oppo in any game
Most of all, enjoy the game.
I’m trying a new technique out this season so it’ll be interesting to see if it helps or not. I’m happy if I have a bad season just to see.
-
Main one is to get out and play,,,it’s been a long winter!
But,, be nice to win the league again, and definitely the cup this year
Batting, those that know me, know I don’t do too bad with that,,,would be nice to get the oca batting award,,but I throw my wicket away too easily,,still not got a thousand runs in a season, only got 8 teams in our div so not a lot of games to go at, but still no excuse
Bowling,,,no chance this year,,,way too old to be bowling hundred overs a season again,,,,might turn my arm over, if our lot are struggling
-
Can’t bowl anymore, so just to bat. Bat, bat and bat, to stay in long enough to actually enjoy it!
-
Bat for as long as possible and score some runs after disappointing and restricted 2018.
-
Fitness : arthritis in knee due to knee tear in 2013 caused by banging front foot into the pitch in delivery side season after season repaired by surgeon hopefully get through the season without breaking down
-
As I've been re-elected Captain, my aims are not to annoy either the oppo or my own team with my decision making! Should be fine, it's not my first rodeo...

Hardest job of all not annoying teammates and oopponents.

Not annoy oppos?
Crikey I go out my way to annoy oppos
-
That’s because you are from the North and therefore a little bit ‘chippy’ 😮
-
We had a disaster last year, got relegated and lost our 2 opening bowlers. This has meant I've been pulled off the scrapheap to bowl a decent amount for the first time since 2013, which should be interesting, just hope the body holds up. Will do whatever job is needed with the bat, batted from top to bottom last season, top scores were as a grinding opener and last 10 hacker!! Been appointed midweek skipper, hoping to encourage a few more youngsters from the village to help out the Saturday team and the club overall. I'm

Got a text from our skipper today... sounds like our two of our better quicks have been poached by a bigger club. Will be focusing on my bowling a bit more for the rest of preseason!
-
Similar to @edge we have potentially lost 3 quicks now rather than two, so hopefully my overs will go up! We've lost one to London club/fiancee, one to the Royal Navy and apparently one to either Cuckfield or East Grinstead but not certain about that. Still got three seamers and two/three spinners so a decent attack anyway.

I don't set personal targets, cricket is a team game and personal goals distract people from that fundamental fact. I see so many people lose their simple enjoyment of playing the game because they're too busy obsessing over their personal targets.
You're running around in a field with your mates for a few hours. None off us are pros, the runs and wickets don't actually count for anything in the long run. Once the game is finished, they're totally irrelevant forever.
More appropriate targets would be to play your part in making the club, the league and the wider game an inclusive welcoming environment in which everyone feels welcome regardless of age, background or ability level.
-
This is my first full season back in the game for 37 years, so my goals are suitably sized:
-achieve a batting average above ten.
-if get asked to do some bowling, not embaress myself.
-get fit.
-have fun.
-meet some people.

Ah you killjoy. Never congratulated a teammate for their excellent batting in a game your team lost? All for perspective and enjoying it as a team, but no harm in people wanting to do well.
-
Fair enough, and I want to do well and keep an eye on my average and runs etc, but in SLA's defence - I know a few people who could do with worrying less about their average and just enjoy the game for what it is.
-

Congratulating people on a good performance is fine, as is taking pleasure in good performance of your own, as long as you don't become hubristic. But an interest in personal statistics can easily develop into an unhealthy obsession, and either ruin people's simply enjoyment of playing cricket, or develop into unhealthy competition between teammates that sours the club atmosphere. It is to be discouraged - I've seen it ruin several clubs.
In the club I run, we automatically retire batsmen at 25, we deliberately spread the bowling around so 5-fers are a rarity, and we refuse to publish individual statistics during the season (and discourage batsmen from keeping track). We award a champagne moment but not a player of the year or anything like that. We explicitly encourage and celebrate examples of selfless, team play, such as batsmen willing to risk their wicket and their average by trying to score quickly, and bowlers willing to bowl to a field, rather than search for glory. We find that this enormously increases people's enjoyment of playing.
I would seriously recommend any teams out there who struggle to hold onto their players consider adopting this approach.
-
great that you can do that, i know a few midweek sides that do that in my area ('pub' sides in a t20 league) and they seem to have a great time - unfortunately Saturday cricket will never take that on with promotion/relegation and sunday cricket seems on its backside near me!!
-
We got promoted by accident, finished very happily in 5th place in our division but adjustments to the league structure have seen us bumped up to Div 3. Not really what we want as our focus is to develop our youngsters. But, can't complain too much considering the struggles of sunday cricket leagues elsewhere.
So, I'll probably open again, hope to make 350 runs at 35ish. Still rubbish at bowling and likely to be slower in the field again so a couple of wickets and 5 catches will be fine.
Very much hoping to try out the test bats that @Northern monkey has on his list to complete... :) If that is possible then I'd like to set up a rota for other interested Forumites to have a go with them too.
Good luck to you all!

Not annoy oppos?
Crikey I go out my way to annoy oppos
:D :D
We're a friendly/nomadic club, if you upset the oppo they just decline the fixture and you have to find a new game!
-
1. Score more runs than last season
2. Win more matches than last season
3. Drink less beer than last season
-
number 3 probably affects numbers 1 and 2.
-
I'm giving Saturday cricket a punt this year, probably in the 4s. Not bowling leg side wides would be lovely
-
Last year was my third year since coming back to cricket after a decade off and my spinning finger seems to be totally (No Swearing Please) so I had to concentrate a lot on improving my batting:
2016: 9 innings, 74 runs @ 9.25 with a top score of 22
2017: 14 innings, 142 runs @ 10.92 with a top score of 32
2018: 12 innings, 264 runs @ 24.00 with a top score of 54 (My first ever fifty)
I didn't achieve my preseason aim of two half centuries (Second highest score was 41) but it turns out that batting is actually not that difficult and batsmen are all a bunch of frauds. I'm onto you, you prima donnas!
Next season I need to work on being more selfish and not worrying so much about run rates and targets and just focus on converting 20 and 30s into 50s, 60s , 70s etc. I'm such a cricket geek I always end up doing calculations in my head about what kind of target we can set and I forget that we always get bowled out with 15 overs to spare every Saturday.
I doubt I'll bowl at all this season so I hope to average 30+ with at least a couple of fifties as a bare minimum. If I can get bumped up the order a little bit then I want to get that highest score into at least 70-80 territory, maybe I get lucky and get my first hundred.
EDIT: Biggest thing that will help will have to be getting rid of this huge belly so I'm not totally knackered by the time I've faced half a dozen deliveries.

number 3 probably affects numbers 1 and 2.
I never drink on a Friday so probably not. The post match celebrations were the problem!
-
Not bowling leg side wides would be lovely
I second that aim/shame
-
Missing 3 matches and a team pulled out so 17 Saturday game's max for me!
I would loveto average 30.

1st outdoor net, nothing serious, think I was holding the very tight while trying to spin the ball, had a good bowling session though.
guess staying fit is the name of the game here, 2019

To play more than the one game I played last season due to family commitments. Sadly it's not looking likely.
-
To enjoy my cricket and to bring on the next generation of the clubs players.
To win more than we did last year

First proper game of the season and I may have failed in my aim to not break any fingers.
Amazingly I managed to damage one in the football warm up! Hopefully it's just bruised, but I'll take a view on if I need an x-ray after tomorrow's game :-[

I know that feeling and also hope to beat my effort of one game last season!
-
To play a fixed batting position at #3.
-
It'd be nice to hit a 50 at some point and hopefully play more than half a dozen games.
Apart from that I'd be pretty happy if I get to stand around in the sun without burning too much.

To rekindle my passion for the sport and get back to a decent standard. Played some county cricket when I was young and then took 10+ years off. Biggest regret ever!
