yeah so Tim Paine is using stretton fox now too
using the inner thigh guard as a chest guard too. bit weird. but whatevs. if it works it works

I have struggled to get the inner thigh pad to work. However I shape it and however I attach it with the straps, it always ends up protected the inside of my knee cap within the first over. Maybe it is supposed to be used as a chest guard after all
-
I saw the second photo and assumed he had a chest guard, didnt realise he was using the inner thigh there!

Ive struggled with the inner thigh aswell, it seems harder to get a proper fit. Resorted to bending it way way past the shape of my inner thigh and strapping it tightly in the kitbag for a few days. Does work but needs doing every week or 2. Not the dream thighpad product I was looking for but a definite improvement on aero strippers
-
It worked well for me. I went super aggressive with both thigh guards - almost like you’d roll up a towel. Pic here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CDuDYkfh67a/?igshid=12tnb320gjqvk (https://www.instagram.com/p/CDuDYkfh67a/?igshid=12tnb320gjqvk)
Then let it sit for a day or two and it will open up slightly on its own. No need to redo it after this.

Steve smith was also using them in a recent net, doesn't look like he got the memo about shaping them before!

Is this what they mean by 'All the gear, no idea'?
-
Mine goes back to the same shape as Smith is wearing after a few weeks if I do not keep them strapped up really tight in the kit bag . And the strap at the back keeps riding up the hip . An excellent product , but maybe there is some scope for improvement after all .
-
I appreciate the innovative aspect of the product but product has to work. What we are seeing here is something I have alluded to in the past: time consumption. If a product takes too much effort or too long to become effective, it is a time-expensive product.
Make things easy to use. No wonder Remfry's are so popular.
-
I would say stick to aeros or remfry. Strettons are a good concept but very tedious.
-
Are the old style SF’s no longer available. And has anyone given feedback directly to @StrettonFox Sports ?
-

Respectfully disagree. Took me about two hours to figure it out (tried a few different shaping techniques) but the reward is excellent. If you get the moulding right, you won’t find a more comfortable set of thigh guards. I think they need to release more detailed videos to help people figure it out - not many have the patience for trial and error.
-

Totally agree with you ! People don’t want to be faffing on with getting the moulding right etc, I certainly couldn’t be bothered with it. Best set of thigh pads I’ve used is the moonwalkr Endos
-
One of my worst cricketing decisions was to get rid of my battered Remfrys for a pair of Strettons.
Just couldn’t get on with them and found them nowhere near as comfortable as the Remfrys. Couldn’t get them to fit as well as the Remfrys despite weeks of trying! Gave up in the end and sold them on!
-

Since trying the Strettons i have gone out and purchased another pair of Aeros. I have had a number of attempts to get the moulding right without success plus the size and shape of the insight thigh pad doesn't work for me. If I could get the outside thigh pad to work, I would probably have to go down the route of Tim Paine and use a different inner thigh pad with it.
The ideal product for me would be using the material in the Strettons to make a pair of Aeros

Looks like Labushagne has started using them also! Look a lot better moulded too!

I have both SFoxes and Remfrys. I might try that.

Maybe George will come out with a V2 version eventually that addresses feedback?
-

which are better in your opinion? i have some strettons but am considering trying some remfry’s
-
Yep I had the same issues as previous mentioned. Straps kept riding out of position, inner thigh pad too big and moulding would gradually flatten out.
Great concept but I sold them on and went back to my trusty basic SS combi set
-

I'm in the position of not being a batsman but wanting better equipment to make the most of want I have. Meaning I haven't spent as much time as most of you at the crease; disclaimer.
I moved from Aero P1's to both of these around the same time. You quickly forget how bulky the Aero's felt compared to either of these. They are both very good so you quickly accept the new norm. The only thing is I still have to shape the Foxes inner thigh to my liking so the Remfrys have had more time at the crease. If I didn't have the Remfrys I would have spent more time with the Foxes and never looked back. I've used two sets of Remfrys. The first set was a bit on the small side so when another set became available I sold them on to a teammate. Very happy with either though.
In a nutshell, both are comfy and less bulky than Aeros. Both give confidence that if you do get hit you can get away with it. Even in different sizes, the Remfrys worked out of the box. Foxes need fettling but give the same result.
One thing though. I was never too keen on getting the right shape of Foxes via the template that George sent to you. Yes, a more bespoke product but more chance of getting something wrong. Can others vouch for the small, medium or large approach or is the template a better (if more expensive) option?
Thanks to @Komdotkom I've now got a lovely L&W Ultra and I'm now looking forward to spending more time in the nets to get the most from it.
-
Do you guys not find all this stuff restricts your movement? My batting average doubled the season I dumped everything except pads, gloves and box and I've never looked back since. Felt so much sharper at the crease.

thanks for the reply, i want to try a pair just to compare to the 2 and see what suits me better, i really do like the strettons (old version) but do have to adjust them alot

Not at all with Aero P2s, pretty confident I could field in them if I wanted to.

I do find with just an outer thigh pad on I move better at the crease yeh. There is a case that a lot of people do only use the outer for this reason.

Long ago I decided that I never got hit in the thigh, so experimented with going without thigh pads. Every time I went without them I got nailed in the thigh by a quick! In any case, modern pads like Strettons/Aeros just disappears when you're wearing them, they're a huge improvement on the stiff old school stuff.

I only use the Stretton outer thigh pad and haven't even tried moulding the inner to try for the same reason.

I don't wear them - just a box, pads, helmet and gloves. If I am standing in front of a Bola set to high speed, then I look like Robocop.
It is not just mobility that's restricted by thigh pads, but they become very hot. A long inning under the hot sun can become excruciating when your pants are hot!
-
I know I’ve posted this before, but for everyone having issues with moulding the pads, you need to get SUPER aggressive with rolling up the pads after you heat them. Roll them up like a yoga mat. It becomes very easy after that. Here’s the pic I’ve posted before to illustrate how aggressive you need to get: https://www.instagram.com/p/CDuDYkfh67a/?igshid=ztquhzp134nm (https://www.instagram.com/p/CDuDYkfh67a/?igshid=ztquhzp134nm)
It looks like the elbow guard, but it’s actually the outer thigh !

I think the issue is not that we cannot shape it, the issue is that it does not hold the shape for a long time unless you go all nuclear nadal on it and keep it rolled up rather aggressively, which , after a certain point of time starts to look more or less like a chore . Once I'm done with my innings, i would like to just let the equipment dry, strap it up and pack in my kitbag . I really like my thigh pads, but after a certain point of time, I'm left guessing if using my $20 SG thigh pads is better than using a $100 stretton fox . The sole reason i shifted to Stretton fox was because it was moldable and provided better fit but if i have to refit it after every game then its beats the purpose as per me .

I guess the necessity of a thigh guard purely depends on the level of cricket one plays. If you are playing in the higher leagues (Div 1/2 in most leagues and higher) then not wearing a thigh guard would be very risky. If you are playing in the lower leagues, then the thigh guards are only useful against beamers.

Lower leagues on crap pitches, I like the extra protection. Plus as you've said, beamers from lower standard bowlers.

And now Marnus using a full pair not just the straps

Yes - if you're playing against 70-80mph bowlers on fast bouncy tracks, its probably necessary.
This is less than 10% of all amateur cricket though. Most amateur cricketers playing against 50-60mph "pace" bowlers on puddings where a bouncer reaches them at 40mph if at all, don't even really need a helmet, let alone thigh guard, chest guard, arm guard, lol.

What level of pads and gloves do you use @SLA ? The very best or not bothered? Wondered if you’ve ever had an injury caused by this

I currently have some newish b3 gloves and some gm pads that I bought for 40 quid in 2010.
I had to throw away my old gn gloves as all the holes had joined together and my thumb and fingers were just sticking out. I think I've owned 3 pairs of gloves and 3 pairs of pads in the last 30 years?
Never had a leg injury, can't really feel it when the ball hits the pads at all. I see no reason why my current pads won't last another 10 years.
I haven't had a hand injury batting since the 90s when I broke my finger batting in a 1st div game on a lethal wet astro pitch.
I did break my thumb this summer, but that was foolishly agreeing to keep wicket because noone else could do it. I missed a week of cricket because of that.

Would you mind posting a pic of the kit you’re using? Would be good to see the actual condition of your kit and how you carry on using it.
Also, what about bats? Do you just use them forever?

I use them until they break, which could be anything between a few months and 10 years.
I've tried various strategies, from expensive bats to cheap bats to not even owning a bat and just using one out of the club kit bag.
The pingiest bat I ever owned cost me £50 from sports direct as an emergency replacement, I bought it on the Friday and scored a ton with it on the Saturday. It lasted a month before splitting.
I've also had top of the range bats that were complete planks, stuff I've bought from ebay that broke immediately, and mid-range bats that lasted a decade.
I've settled on buying relatively expensive but not top of the range bats from B3. This seems to work well - reasonably durable (4 years in, no cracks yet) and also very good performance.

It is a balance. If I get hit on an uncovered part of my leg, I get swelling which restricts my movement for the rest of the innings, but any padding that is too unwieldy or uncomfortable inhibits natural movement and becomes a distraction.
The Aero P2s are the best I have come across. They stay perfectly in place with no movement at all whilst playing any shot or running. They also move naturally to my body so I really don't notice wearing them. Also, they are shaped so they don't come into contact with my box (this is one of the main issue I have had with the shape of the Stretton inner thigh guard.
The only issue that I have with the Aeros is that on my waist measurement, the pads are not long enough to cover my upper legs (I have tried the next size up but the waist is then too big), leaving an uncovered section as can be seen from the picture below.
(https://i.postimg.cc/RCPrxVQZ/FB-IMG-1609676842553.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I tried the Strettons to see if I could solve this issue but have stuck with the P2s.

This might be correct , but IMO, the idea of wearing protection is to mitigate the possibility of an Injury. Even at 40 Mph, if you get hit on your head , or your hip bone, it's gonna hurt for some time . And a ball hitting on thigh pad gives you a chance to get some runs too .
I play at a pretty low level now where bowlers are mostly in the 50 -70 MPH region and wear all the necessary protection while batting and was once was hit on my helmet by a ball that rose sharply from short of length of a bowler who was probably bowling around 50- 60 mph. Felt fine after sitting for a few minutes and came back to bat . It was only the second day that I had concussion symptoms . Had to take the day off from office . Without a helmet that could had been a dangerous situation .
There are many in my team who play without thigh pads and time and again I have seen them getting hit on their hip joint and being unable to continue their innings . One guy lost his tooth while trying to sweep a spinner without helmet on .This prompted our league to make helmets mandatory.
Everyone has their own preferences, but i think it's better to be wearing protective equipment which ever level a person is playing cricket at.

Some of the most nasty facial injuries I have seen have been from batsmen top edging sweeps into their face.

Live and let live. Hardly anyone wears helmets and thigh guards at the mid-tier level of cricket I play, and in 25 years of league cricket, the only batsmen I've seen retired hurt have been non-strikers hit by a straight drive. If you feel more comfortable wearing all this stuff, go for it, but it does cricket no favours to exaggerate the absolutely minimal threat you face as an amateur level batsman - bowlers, umpires and close fielders are in a lot more danger in my experience. Cricket's already one of the safest sports there is, if you made protective gear compulsory a lot of people would just go and do something else instead.

You've conflated two different positions: not wearing thigh pads vs not wearing helmets are two different things. Initial statement was about thigh pads.
If you are playing without a helmet, you need psychiatric help.
Thigh pads are a different story. It depends on your batting style and technique. I tend to edge deliveries to my lower inside (right leg) thigh and inner pad doesn't cover it. It always stung. Front thigh has never been an issue - rarely (knock on wood) get hit there. So, I don't wear thigh pads. They also get very hot, I just don't like the feeling.
Regarding beamers, last one was aimed at my helmet so not sure how a thigh pad would help with that. :D
-

My buddy did that, he took off his helmet on a low matting pitch. Blood was everywhere.
-
Thigh pads are, by definition, no protection whatsoever against beamers. ;)

You are (most likely) describing a situation local to you. It may not be the same everywhere even at "low" division levels.
In our league, every *new* team starts at the lowest division. Meaning: it is a decent to crazily competitive division. Winner climbs up to higher divisions. We have had lot of good players go thru the lowest level division. Regardless, helmets are a must have. Non-striker and umps also benefit from some protection - we've had incidents.
Thigh pads? Personal preference.

I've played for 25 years without a helmet, never got injured, will play for 25 more.
Same can be said for 90% of the people I play with or against.
Ball rarely bounces above waist high, I don't play the sweep shot unless its well down the legside, and if I get a beamer I lean back and top edge it over 2nd slip. Where's the risk?

I've played in 14 counties, I've never noticed a sudden leap in the number of helmets worn in lower leagues.
Do you have a lot of new teams in your league? That sounds pretty unusual (and good news!) - most county leagues are the same 40-50 clubs every year (well, 1 or 2 drop out but aren't replaced).

if someone is getting hit by a thigh high full toss they should maybe consider golf.

Yes we do. I did a quick count on the web page (not all may be active in all divisions) - 30+ clubs. 3 to 5 divisions in league - depending on number of clubs. Most clubs have minimum 1+ teams for different divisions.
Most games are played on astro-turf pitches - tennis ball bounce. A spinner could bowl a bouncer.
This my public service announcement: wear a helmet!

This sounds like a somewhat atypical league setup. Astroturf pitches?

Is there a way we can get additional straps for the stretton foxes ? I'm thinking that maybe getting a second strap near the lower thigh will probably help with the fit . ( Somewhat like moonwalkr) ?
-
I’ve been there with a top edge into mouth from a spinner - lost front tooth & 12 stitches
We are all grown ups and understand risk - make your own choice, but I hope the generation coming through that had to wear a lid from U18 continue to wear a lid.
I would not dream of batting at the indoor nets without thigh pad/box/helmet - you rarely get one in your half from the quicks and I bruise like a peach ;)
-
14 counties what you playing softball cricket I have got around the country played against 90 mph bowlers in ECB Prem cricket and played against what best can be described as donkey drops on puddins and I wear a lid.
Most people I know wear lids and most cricket I have watched wear lids
The helmets my 2nd most important bit of kit bar my remfrys !!!!!
Don't want to ruin my rural looks to the wife !!!

Email George at Stretton Fox, he supplies spare/extra straps direct. george@strettonfoxsports.com iirc.
-
I think you've explained perfectly why you need a thigh pad and a lid @procricket, you're playing ECB Premier League cricket.
@SLA plays cricket where the club's have no bars and the players don't even wear whites, so not quite EBC Prem.
It's all relative to your ability, the standard you play and if your looks are worth preserving.

Back to the original topic, with the players all stuck in the biosecure hotel bubble, room service must be fed up of sending these thigh pads down to the kitchen for a spell in the oven before bringing them back up again. My partner got fed up of me doing shuttle runs to the kitchen and back trying to fix these

My partner got fed up of me doing shuttle runs to the kitchen and back trying to fix these
Much easier when you can bribe a junior teammate with a free bat you got from your sponsors 😂

.......bowlers, umpires and close fielders are in a lot more danger in my experience....
I'm inclined to agree with this. I see far more injuries to fielders than batsmen. Im not sure if this is because of the batsman's equipment or despite it. Maybe you concentrate more when you know the ball is definitely coming your way each delivery.
Personally I've never been struck on the head batting but I wear a lid now because it gives me confidence knowing that, if I am, I will probably get away with just a bit of a scare. Also, the idea of going out to bat without a lid and then finding their random 3rd change bowler is seriously rapid and seriously wayward in direction is rather terrifying!

I’ve recently gone to the new Stretton Fox thigh pad. I’ve always found it difficult to find a good thigh pad. I’m very happy.
