Title: First bat shaping attempt
Post by: wilkie113 on March 09, 2022, 09:17:17 PM
As the title suggests. I have been wanting to shape a part made for quite a while now, but haven’t got around to it due to a few things. I loosely based the shape on the Gray Nics giant, but had to make a few tweaks to the shape as it was never going to be as big as that! I don’t have all that many tools currently, but will grab a few more for my next attempt. This was done with a drawknife, flat bottom spokeshave and a no4 plane.

Weighs 2.13 and I have left the handle very thick, I do need to reduce this as now it’s bound it’s too thick for me, unless of course somebody wants to buy it instead haha!
Enough of my waffling, here are some pictures I grabbed at work earlier.

Big fan of that toe shaping, much prefer it to a completely square toe.

That looks like a monster! Really good job - the finish looks great. And I agree about the toe, it looks nice.

Would love to say I thought of it myself but there is a few of the guys making bats on here who inspired it!

Well done mate top effort for a first bat and please don’t sell it, there is something about using a bat that you made yourself especially your first one. Still use my first attempt and I can say it wasn’t as good as this one turned out buddy

Agree with the comments mate, great first effort as I've already said.

I'd also echo what Chris had said, definitely keep your first one. Mine hasn't been used and maybe never will, but it will remain in my workshop forever i reckon.

Top work mate!

Much appreciate mate. I have since reshaped the handle and it will be kept

Thanks mate appreciate it. I took inspiration from a couple of the different toe shapes I’ve seen on here!!

Nice mate. Looks like Dhoni's bat.

I’d be more than happy for him to use it!

So I’ve been busy, bought three clefts off John at Redink.

This is actually the 4th I have made now. I don’t have fanatic pictures of the other two. But this is the one I am most pleased with so far! As with the first, would love to hear what you think

Thanks mate, I was kind of aiming for a baby millichamp distinction shape

Looks really good!  Anyone can shape a bat, but the mark of someone who takes real care and pride in their work, is a dead straight, perfectly even spine that goes all the way to the toe.  And to do that with a fair amount of concaving is not an easy thing to do (or so I found, anyway!).

Thanks mate appreciates.

It took me forever, I was constantly checking the spine and the more I looked at it the more it didn’t look straight, so I did this over a couple of days as I walked away from it and came back to make sure I wasn’t telling myself things! I think I’m most proud of this one because of the challenge it posed

Taps up really nicely, Johns pressing is absolutely bang on

Bloody heck, that shaping through the toe is superb - it's an absolute ballache to get it even. Don't think I've actually managed to get any of my attempts that nice - the shape actually reminds me of my Helios with the tapering towards the splice/shoulders and that massive toe. This has given me the itch to shape something soon...

Top work 👏
