ash hit the nail on the head do not think about it to much and try to remember when you scored runs when you do think about it.

i had a problem when i over think about things but i try to put my mind at ease by remember good innings i have played or a good shot.

try to remember of the player you know you can be

"Theres nothing to fear, but fear itself", best quote ever, just be fearless and don't care about the end result. Just enjoy every minute you can play this great game, don't be afraid of failure...

well said choppy in truth though most of us fail more times than we succeed but remember why you play the game and you will not go far wrong

I used to be like this when i was 14 and started to open the batting, But i started to remember a moment of my life when i had fun and there was no worries, Soon after the next few games i had no nerves, Now i open every week and have a laugh and joke but 10mins before i focus and go out and bat, never think about the what if's. But the i am going to hang around and score some serious runs.

concentrate on one thing and just that one thing. I make sure i watch the ball out of the bowlers hand, not the area. Sounds simple but makes a major difference. Actually watch the ball in the bowlers hand at the point of release and not an area where you think its coming from.

I find by doing this, footwork etc becomes instinctive.

Try it in the nets.

i opened the batting for our 3rds in 2008, averaged 76 in the league over 13 innings and wasnt nervous once in the whole season. in 2009, i started in the 1sts and 2nds and got 2 ducks on the trott and pooed myself for the rest of the season. i dont know what to think this year!!

i work on little targets

1) bat on ball
2) of the mark
3) Boundary ball

3 isn't that important, but will boost confidence and settle nerves.

When I hit my first 50, I went in after 3 balls after being put up the number 3 because on injuries. I was so nervous. Opening bowler bowled me a shot ball, nailed a pull shot for 4 and all nerves were gone.

I have nerves every time I bat, as Liam says if you put away a ball early in your innings it releases a lot of pressure. Now I'm confident to go in and face first ball, I think if you worry a lot at the crease you're not focused on the main thing which is batting so just go in and play like you have nothing to lose. Put the bad ball away and bat overs as the runs will come - like the saying goes, you can't score runs in the pavilion!

Liam, try thinking about one thing only otherise your mind becomes cluttered. It works for me but everyone is different. Try just watching the ball in the nets, all of a sudden you are off the mark !! If your main priority is to get of the mark you will play at balls that you should leave.

truth is mentality has become so big in cricket in terms of sports psycholigists will tell you that is the main difference between you and a player playing first class were we think about it they just do it.

our team has a sports shrink and i for one do listen but understand very little.(thick)

i think it best to just not think and go with the flow

Be mentally lazy between balls or overs. There was an awesome article on cricinfo with Sachin about concentration. If anyone can find it read it!

if you are a nervous person then there is no way of changing that, learn to work with it instead of fighting against it. theres no point in hoping for a miracle cure! just channel all that nervous energy in to concentration.

also, since cricket is a passtime for us (as opposed to a job) we shouldnt really get nervous, theres no REAL pressure on us while we play (like trying to earn a living)... just consider this next time you play because if you cant enjoy it then your not gonna be any good when these nerves get the better of you

another good thing i have found is to think to myself "i am going to do my best, and if the bowler gets me out i can leave the pitch with my head held high, but as long as i dont give my wicket away thats the main thing" i think thats a good mental approach, more people should try it

I have to say opening is very different to going in at 4 - when you open you are in and you get on with it, at 4 you are thinking about batting but not able to make a difference until the second wichet falls - personally 4 is my least favourite place to bat (other than below 6!) (I usually bat at 3 but have opened a lot).
The best way around it is not to get fully padded up and stay around people who are relaxed - not people who are also very tense. Have a couple of throw downs to feel the bat on ball and have a cup of tea and enjoy your team mates batting. When it is your turn to bat, follow Kieron's advice above (although I try to watch the ball in the bowlers hand from the start of his run up, not just at the moment of release).
Confedence makes it easier - but in general nerves are good to get the blood flowing.

back on topic now this not for everbody but thung that got me over the fear of quick bowlers was after i got hit a few times in various sports(plus nearly puncturing a lung in one) after that thought what the hell its going to happen eventually so i don't fear it plus buzz will agree with you much prefer opening as you just go straight out sitting there not knowing if your going in in the 1st over or 30th is annoying

Practice, Practice, Practice! Before your innings just listen to your iPod or read a magazine

i read somewhere that you should not read anything before going to bat as your eyes are used to close focus and not the focus required to see the ball coming

I think about my cricket way too much. If you're relaxed at the crease I don't think you will get yourself out as you're not thinking "where am I going to hit this?" Like I said, bat the overs and the runs will come

The only thing i think about is if the London Pride will taste good after the game, Then i bat, Once i get out, I will analyse my performance, See where it could of been better, Just for the next time i bat.

Like other's have said mate, it's all about confidence and your mental approach. If you are constantly nervous you aren't going to change that, and the more you play, the more you will learn to cope/use the nerves as a positive effect.
The thing I use to help me is that as soon as the bowler is walking back, clear your mind, I personally use the side screen as it is plain white and focus on that, until the bowler starts his run up- then you should be watching the ball.  There is nothing worse than still thinking  about the ball you got the delivery before, even if it did jag back a foot, or dive straight along the floor- do not cloud your natural instincts as they are the things that make you play at your best.

See ball - Hit ball

it really is as easy as that in my opinion. As long as you are just seeing (watching) the ball your mind will be uncluttered and instinct takes over. All your practicing for certain shots or areas of weakness is done in the nets so it should all be pure instinct.

I know if I am struggling I do one of two things to help me relax and focus.

1) I have a song that I keep repeating in my head, I usually just have a few lines repeating, sounds daft but it gel
me.
2) I have also tried repeating a word in my head over and over in my head while the bowler is running in. Some like focus for example

Don't read before you go out to bat - if you want to do something with the nervous energy bounce a tennis ball in front of you to get your brain trained to watching the ball going vertical rather than lateral just like a delivery

Practice harder than anyone else, you can then go out to the middle knowing that you have practiced harder and prepared better than anyone else on the field

Lots of good advice here, but really there is no hard and fast way to get around it as everyone's different. Eventually you'll find your own way around it, whatever that might be, but as long as the nerves don't materialise as any wild technical deficiency, crazy run or something then you should be fine.

given that batting is 75% in the head, I think there is more good advice on this thread than in most coaching books!!!
