Having culled my bat collection down pretty significantly to a manageable 10 (more or less), and needing to select the 2 that will go into the match bag, I am conducting a highly unscientific and subjective testing process. This review will take some time over the next few days but I thought I’d introduce the contestants as a start.
Its not an easy exercise to rank them as they are all really good bats and I would be happy to randomly take any 2 for a match but even in this select group there are differences.
Needless to say, this is not a judgement on the brands at all. Just a rank ordering of 10 specific bats using highly subjective assessment. Only 2 criteria will be used : Rebound and balance. At this stage everything else is secondary (grains, finish, pod shaver reputation etc) and while special mention will be made on these aspects it will not play a role in the ranking.
The Top 7: Clearly the Scat and Laver start as favorites but they are up against some very tough competition including my match bat from the last season, the blank SS. More on the challengers later.

Best of the rest : including the very impressive but sadly bow-less Redback and the SRT-profiled Newbery sourced from Mike. Also includes the BDM that I had stupidly put up for sale some time ago and thankfully didn't get the desired price.

Realy nice bats mate. What brand is the unstickered bat?
-
try reading! its a blank SS
-
Sorry mate, i thought he was on about the stickered SS. Didnt read it correctly.
-
the blank is a bog standard SS Ton that just turned out to be a belter. A shining example that great bats don't necessarily have to be expensive...
-
to be honest mate i dont think u can go wrong with any of them, they all look like beauts
-
all look very nice mate, im sure any would do you proud!
-
Looking forward to reading more, you really have a beautiful collection of bats and that BDM looks great but I like your sensible method of choosing between them.
-
I love the distinction and Laver :) Pure willow bliss!!
-
Any profile pics? ;)
-
What a collection to have, some awesome looking willow then
-
I see another bat whore, but what a collection! My top 5 is in there as well, which is your personal favourite?

Desperately trying not to be a bat freak ;) . Let go of several top bats over the winter including a couple of donations. But the buck stops here...I think. Anyway, the winter mercato is done and dusted and now its time for the real fun... on the pitch.
Can't choose a favourite. That's why its tough to select just 2 match bats. And I don't like taking many bats to the ground or constantly swapping once the season starts. It might not seem so but I am actually quite loyal to my match bats!!
-
So, here's more info on these bats and some more pics.

Next up is the M&H Distinction
This bat was custom made but ordered through Yash who has a good relationship with the folks over there.
I have been very apprehensive about this brand and all the stories about them having lost the past glory and so on and so forth. But when the Distinction came out it seemed to be custom made for my specs - Big (correction, humungous) spine, low middle and gentle bow. Agreed the edges are small by modern standards but this bat’s centre has more meat than I had ever seen on a bat (note: this was before the Laver arrived). So, I decided to give it a shot.
With the stock shape taking care of many specs that I would have normally given, the only additional guidance was the weight (2.10-2.12-ish) and to make the bat out of the best pinging willow regardless of grain and other facial cosmetics.
Result? The bat has turned out to be a belter. The willow face is not a looker which was a bit underwhelming when I first opened the box. But that feeling lasted only until I hit it with a mallet. Brilliant rebound and very nice pick-up. This and the Scat pick up the lightest among the bats in the Top 7 list. And the middle really is a beast! The shape tapers off quite a bit towards the edges so it is not as forgiving but I am not too bothered with that. I like big spines (with or without a big edge) because my zone of error when mis-hitting is more vertical along the blade rather than outwards towards the edges. If anything this bat doesn't carry much dead weight where I don't need it and hence picks really light.
The Distinction comes knocked in but I feel that this one still needs a bit of throw-downs and netting to hit peak.
To wrap up this post, a final word on the finish and the service. It is definitely a couple of notches down on the Screaming Cat and the Laver. I am not a stickler for bone finish, buffing etc but I do think a bat that costs this much should have better finish. I can’t comment on the service level of M&H but will say that it was great dealing with Yash. He is very diligent and responsive to customer requests. What had started as a discussion about a custom SS turned into this bat !

Yeah, ok. There's a lot of wood there!!!
-
wow, nice bats there str8bat!
-
Cant decide if i love or hate the M & H !
-
I hear you, Rich. Looks awful. Plays wonderfully...
-
Well I'm all about performance so all's good, its a very very different profile which I'm guessing would need to be picked up to see exactly what its like. I'm not one to comment on something unless I've tried it out as I'm not sure you can comment unless you have but that's only my own opinion. Wouldn't mind trying one out but i wouldn't spend that type of money now on a bat no matter how much i wanted to see what it was like.
-
Looks like a concaved retro
(http://www.cricketdemon.co.uk/acatalog/M&H-Retro-09.jpg)
-
I was also apprehensive about it. It is the oddest shape I have ever bought. I took a bit of a punt in that I had never picked anything like that but very happy with it. I am in a phase where I'd like to experiment a bit after having spent years with more or less the same profile.
Personally, my last frontier would be the Mongoose or the Joker. Still not mentally prepared for shorter bats.
-
Norbs - It does look like a concaved Retro with a higher spine and a bit more bow probably?
-

Looking at your rather fine collection i do see a space for a Joker, adding a t20 bat to that collection finishes it off rater well and a t20 bat is a must for any young cricketer or old for that matter.
-
You'll have to tell me about your real life experience out in the middle with the Joker this season. And I'll have to try at some time to see the real benefits of it
Maybe for next year. No more bat vacancies now...
-
Still not mentally prepared for shorter bats.
Not trying to be a pedant but isn't the Newbery Uzi SPS that you already have (both) a shorter (and originally specifically Twenty20) bat?
-
The Newbery is stickered as an Uzi but its actually a standard blade length in Sachin profile.
-
In that case, I humbly apologise and would like to know how you got the stickers. I have 2 Newberys and I have emailed what I thought was the correct address about getting replacement stickers and have had no reply. What address/number did you email/call or did you get them through another route?
-
I've got to say, the BDM intrigues me. What's the profile like, and what was the value that you placed on it, that you were glad was not exceeded?
-
I got the bat from Mike way back in 2008, when Tim K's Sachin profiles were the hottest thing (as they are even today). And he was kind enough to sticker them as Uzi. The B52 had not arrived on the scene then otherwise I would probably have gone for those.
-
Re the BDM, its a Dynamic Power Plus. I took off all the flash stickers recently to give it a cleaner look. I think the price was £110 or £120. Will have to look in my past posts. To be honest I hadn't really tapped it until then and was in a mad frenzy to sell stuff. But when it failed to sell I used it in the nets and was really glad.
-
Bloody hell that's a massive bat, actually like the thinner edges gives it more a classic look. Sounds to me thatvyou have already made your mind up and are going to be using the Scat and Laver
-
I have made up my mind only for the first game which is this coming weekend and its going to be neither of those 2 as they still need some more preparation. But honestly not finalised anything beyond that. Will post the next bat review (SS) tomorrow so you can see why I am in this dilemna.
-
Any chance of profile pics?
-
Colesy, sorry mate, you'll have to wait until tomorrow but I can assure you won't be disappointed ...even if you do not like Indian bats (as a figure of speech, not implying that you personally don't like SS). Is that ok?
-
Lol that's fine, no rush :)
I'm not a lover of Indian bats but they're growing on me :)
-
Next up is the SS Ton. Weighing in at 2.9/10, this bat is a Sachin profile (albeit lighter in weight). I wouldn’t call it fully custom for that reason but I do like the SRT profile a lot and so if I had it custom made from SS, that’s what I would have asked for. In fact, I am not a big fan of the stock SS shape as seen in the top end TONs. As you can see from the pics, there is a lot of wood in this bat especially at the edges and the toe. I could have done with an even bigger spine, without making it bottom heavy, but no major complaints. Compared to the Laver this one has thicker edges but a less imposing spine. Its also one of the most forgiving.
As with the other bats in this list, the rebound and balance is top-notch. I love the bow which is slightly more than the other bats but uniform and suits me well. 3 months ago, this bat was heading straight for my kit bag. But then things became more complicated with the arrival of some other bats. I have been using SS bats for years and this is the best I have personally owned. I got this bat more than a year ago and meant to use it last year but never got to it. In hindsight, I wish I had. It definitely beats my last year’s SS match bat (the blank one on the first page) which itself is an awesome bat that
brought much joy and many runs last season.

Very unusual to have ss stamped so high on one edge and ton on the other, not sure I've seen that before.
-
The SS stamp is typically not on stock ton bats. But when it is there (e.g. in Sachin's own bats from 2008/09 season) it is usually quite high up on the inside edge
-
I am very jealous right now... :P Nah just kidding mate :) Your bat's look ace!
-
Next up are 2 “Pro” bats. I know how misused this word is on the forum and what you might be thinking. I too am prone to a chuckle or two when I see that description.
But the fact of the matter is that both of the following bats were made for International level players. The question then arises, why were they not used by them? Please read on for more on this...
Yuvi’s Bat - The one that missed the plane. Not the bat, but Yuvraj himself. This bat was part of the set that was made for him in advance of the SriLanka test tour in 2008. But Yuvi was rested for the test series. And since I know the contract bat maker for Reebok (at that time) very well, it was a unique opportunity not to miss when he put this one up for sale. Now, some of you might (rightly) observe that there is no "TON" marking but instead a "Reebok" hot stamp. This was actually not that unusual in late 2008 when some contract makers were asked to put the Reebok stamp.
This 2lb8/9 has the best rebound I have seen in a bat. I remember intending to chip over the bowlers head once and watching the ball sail over for one of my biggest 6 ever with it. But unfortunately its also the least forgiving. The sweet spot is relatively concentrated to a smallish area and this for mere mortals like us is not a great thing. The middle is also a bit too high for me. And it is too concaved for my liking. That’s why this bat never became my match bat. But I still use it some times, when our opener falls too early and if the bowler is getting decent lateral movement, since this one has the lightest pick-up of all my bats. Not a great looking bat, nor the biggest profile but when it hits the middle, there is nothing to better it in my collection.

Mattrrixx
This bat was one of 3 bats that Sachin rejected. The reason given was that it was too light. I trust the owner of this brand who I have known for some time now. But whatever the reason, if a bat was in a lot that was shown to SRT that itself is a benchmark of quality. As should be fairly obvious, batmakers select the best willow for the Master, press it as best as they can, shape it to the template he has sent and then get it knocked in first by mallet and then by some league/state level players. So, even in the worst scenario you get a really good quality fully knocked in bat. Which this is.
As you can see from my previous post, the Sachin profile is one of my preferred shapes and so this fits the bill perfectly. Its got a decent amount of wood for its weight (2lb11), has a light pick-up and has a very nice bow to it. But the best part about is the ping. It is truly stunning!! The best of all my bats listed in this topic. Now, this could simply be because it is also the one that has been so meticulously knocked in already. I expect (hope actually given what I paid for it) that the Laver will knock the socks off it by the time it gets played in, but for now this one is top of the hill. The only thing I am missing is a semi-oval handle as this one is round but atleast it is made to Sachin standards and is robust and thick. And as pointed out in a previous post, the oval shape can be created without changing the handle.

I will say it again bud you have some rather fine looking bats with very interesting shapes, i have also tried Matrrixx bats and found them to be very good although i did break it rather quickly but that was more down to me than the bat. It wasn't however a profile similar to yours which would suit me perfectly.
-
I like the Matrixx stickers
-
THATS HUGE!
-
Thanks for the feedback. The problem with Matrrixx (other than the brand name itself!) is that they are very heterogenous in quality. I know some people who have been disappointed with the stock bats. But their top stuff, custom made is absolutely bril. I have an ongoing arrangement with Ajit whereby he pings me every few months when he is in possession of a belter and that stuff is never shoddy. I had first heard of them on the Middlepeg website which only had quality gear. And got one made 4 years ago which was a really good one. But it wasn't until I saw with my own (very sceptical) eyes the bat that Sachin used for his 35th test ton in Delhi that I realised what Ajit's batmaker was capable of. Many Indian players regularly use his bat and softs e.g. Dinesh Kartik, Manoj Tiwary etc. But as I said earlier the off-the-shelf stuff is not always great.
-
I had first heard of them on the Middlepeg website which only had quality gear.
Once again really lovely looking bats. What happened to Middlepeg? Did they go bankrupt? In which case, why is the website still up?
-
Not sure what happened but clearly they stopped selling online. Those guys really had passion for retailing cricket gear and great customer service. They might have kept the website going for a while as it has some good info but its quite dated by now.
-
Once again impressive bats Str8bat
Is Matrixx the original bat maker of Sachin bats?
-
really really impressed with those bats! thats a top selection! which is your match bat?

Is Matrixx the original bat maker of Sachin bats?
I think I've read on CSF in the distant past that Tendulkar sent an old SS to batmakers to copy as that was the shape he prefered
-
Is Matrixx the original bat maker of Sachin bats?
Thanks CD. Sachin has used many different bat makers over the years and many more claim that. The ones I have seen or heard about from trustworthy sources are BAS, BDM, SS, Newbery and Matrrixx.
-
From what I have heard talking to one of the batmakers, he is very meticulous about every little detail. There have been gradual changes in his preferred profile over the years (even more recently) and so the templates change but yes in general he sends one bat and he wants an exact copy. Not just the blade but also the handle.
-
2 more fantastic looking bats, I'm jealous of your collection but don't envy your task of picking that match bat!
-
I own a Matrrixx bat (custom) and it is the best bat I have ever used. It has 30 mm edges 2'6-2'7 Big bow 14 straight grains 1/3 heart wood. AMAZING.
-

Ohh okay. Make sense. Thanks for clarifying it, I appreciate it!
I never thought Matrrixx would make good bats. But it proved me wrong1
-

Ohh okay. I haven't used any Indian brand so I am not too sure how good or bad they are :(

Very nice collection Str8bat!
Have fun choosing your match bat fella! ;)

Will we ever see your bats head to head review ? :P
-
Would take too long for pete me thinks unless he picks a select few
-
I am pretty sure it is worth waiting.
-
I will try to! I'm having problems enough deciding which bats to use for match bats!
But there have been a few nice surprises along the way, such as how SS bats have improved their quality!
Not sure how you rate the SS you have Str8bat, but my SS bats feel excellent!?
-
Im guessing by SS you mean SillyShilly :)
-
Of course! ;)
-
Petehosk - I can only imagine how gigantic your task is if I am struggling with my mere 7 bats!!
Re the SS ( i mean the less prestigious indian ones, not SillyShilly masterpieces !) I am coming from the other end to you I guess. Have used them for years and now experimenting with other brands. HAve the utmost respect for SS. My last 2 year's match bat was an SS, the one before was an SS (possibly for sale soon) and who knows this year might again be an SS. But its going to be mighty tough if I choose only 2 out of this lot...
-
Hey guys,
here is the matrrixx picture gallery:

So, here's more info on these bats and some more pics.
Scat and Laver have already been reviewed in some detail ( http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=4878.0 (http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=4878.0) and http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=5443.0 (http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=5443.0) ).
I went into M&H in Taunton yesterday, there were some awesome pieces of willow in there, not to mention Justin Langer's 20 odd tight grainer on the wall. The Distinction has such an awesome profile, there is so much wood for the weight. They also pick up amazingly well! If yours is anything like the ones I saw yesterday then this has to be your match bat, it would be a crime not to!
-
Liam - The M&H did end up being the match bat. Honestly, I didn't think it would against that kind of competition, but after a couple of back to back games, its gun status is firmly established. Massive massive ping and great balance. Haven't used the Scat, nor the Laver in a match but the M&H is definitely going to stay in the kit bag.
-
Good stuff! That is one thing I find with M&H bats is that they ping really well.
-
fancy selling any of those bats to me :) :) :) :)?? look beautiful!
-
Quick update on the M&H Distinction. I continue to be surprised by how good this bat has turned out to be. It was an impulse buy, very different from the profiles I am accustomed to and I didn't even pick it up myself before buying it. And it has turned out to be probably the among the top 2 bats I have ever used. Massive ping and superb balance. I am quite sure my bat speed has improved given how many runs I score hooking and pulling last weekend against some fairly nippy bowling. Not to boast, but of the 4 times I have used this bat, 3 scores of 80+ and a 155.
Big thanks to Yash for picking this awesome bat!
-
Here's a end of the season round up of how things panned out. When this thread started before the season, I was pretty certain that the Scat and Laver would take the heaviest workload. But there were a few surprises along the way. We played 35 matches this year and I have to admit that the Laver got no match play and the Scat got 3 overs before I decided to swap it for another. Now, this might sound like sacrilege but this situation has less to do with the quality of these 2 supreme bats than with the brilliance of 2 other bats - the M&H Distinction and the SS Sachin.
I have written several times about the M&H and will again emphasis how incredible this bat turned out to be. It has everything (except looks which I don't care about...in a bat) and then some! I think I scored close to a 1000 runs with just this bat including 3 tons.
The SS in Sachin profile is a much more familiar bat as I have used that profile for ages and its the one I feel most comfortable with. But this new incarnation is probably the best of the lot, mainly because it has the broadest and longest spread of the sweetspot. This was the bat I prematurely swapped the Scat for after 3 overs where I couldn't time the ball at all. Being in a difficult chase I panicked and changed the bat. The SS was a great ally in that match and several times after that as i used it almost uniquely in the last 1/3 of the season.
The Matrrixx seems to have a lot of potential which wasn't fully realised this year and I am looking forward to using it in 2011. Seems like once again it will be a difficult choice what to do next year. It would so much simpler to get rid of everything except the M&H and SS and never have to worry about these pointless debates but as many people on this forum know, that's easier said than done!!
-

Str8bat-Got any winter bat purchases lined up!? Sounds like you're turning into a bit of a PeteHosk...
Surprised you chose not to use the screaming cat much as most people would die to use one of those!! Bats look lush anyway.
-
let me know if u want to sell the screaming cat please
-
there is a waiting list for that scat and laver
-
Who's at the top of it ???
-
Mr Hosk of course

GJ - Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Pete is a legend! I am quite content with the ones and in fact was net zero this year having sold off the Redback Allegiance (superb bat that will haunt me for a long time), Warsop and a blank SS.
If I buy another, it will be the fabled new Salix that everyone is getting so excited about. And maybe the M&H Amplus but right now the priority is to make sure I use what I have!
-
Who's at the top of it ???
100 no has my word...for quite some time now!!
-
glad to see you are a man of your word.
Anyone got any pics of the amplus
-
damn it :(
i'l own a SCAT one day haha
-
u can still buy my premium ;)
-
I may well do mate, i'm waiting for you to send it down for me to purrr over....... along with that lid ;)
-
haha yeh i know, will sort something out!
-
good lad :)
-
which one are you using atm? still the M&H?
-
phwoarr that distinction is LUSH, I think my next purchase will be a M&H. How are the handles on them? I prefer thickish semi oval handles like the ones on Hunts County bats.
-
I'm not sure of Hunts handles but M&H do have thick oval handles
