What do you guys think the right amount of kit is for an U15 player, play county and 2 clubs, a school, one club in London and one club in Birmingham area.
Was thinking of two bats, maybe a net bat, 2 pairs of pads, 2/3 pairs of gloves, kit bag, duffle bag, spikes, indoor trainers, aero strippers, 1 helmet.
What amounts do you guys use and what would you think i should get?
Thanks
-
2 bats 2 gloves 1 pads 1 bag spikes thigh guard is probably enough!
-
and helmet!
-
2 sets of gloves, 1 bat, 1 pads, large wheelie, helmet, trainers, spikes and a thigh-pad if you wear one.
-
1 bat, 2 gloves, 1 pads, Helmet, spikes
-
im definitely getting two bats, one high middled, one low middled, the difference between a slow low May wicket and a rock hard August one is difficult to ignore ;), also 2 pairs of pads because I can play( and have done last year) games on 14 days in a row, which makes all the gear very sweaty and sticky, so two pads for that reason, 2 sets of gloves for matches, perhaps one pair for nets, duffle bag, because i got to take my kit on the tube so a large wheelie is impractical, what you tink?
-
No point getting two bats imo. I've used mine on slow and low wickets and bouncy wickets with the same success results.
-
I have two pairs of gloves but use one pair mainly. I let other people use my kit too so that helps if they use some of my gloves then I have another pair so they're not all sweaty.
-
yes, but im getting specialist, modern bats, with most of the wood removed and put into the middle, so if i get just the 1 then itll make a big difference, whereas 2 bats with those types of middle will be much more beneficial to my game :)
nah peplow, these were just suggestions for reasons why i would get this kit, not a mind made up, just playing devils advocate to you all so we can get the best arguments out and i can make an informed decision :)
-
Isnt it important to get used to one bat and how it plays?
-
If you can afford it do what you want but I don't think it's necessary for all of that kit.
-
well theres no need to get angry peplow, and yes it is important to get used to a bat, but i play so much that i will get used to all of them :) and 2 pads because if you play on a saturday and it rains, you dont wsanna play with wet pads on a sunday, 2 bags because i dont want to take allll my kit to training and on the tube a wheelie bag is ridiculous.7
Sam 4 or 5 is ridiculous, high and low is much more sensible
-
I agree with colesy! If you can afford it then do what you want but I've had same gloves and pads last 2 seasons and its all done me fine...
-
ive had same kit for last 2 years so in need for an upgrade, as it wears out relatively quick :(, but im speninding al my money from birthday, working in the garden, and quite possibly christmas as well so i am working for it :)
-
What if there is a pitch with more bounce at one end than the other. Are you going to change bats in between overs? No, you will just put up with it!
Any more than one bat is pointless, even if they are identical. Each bat with perform differently. A bat with a high middle will be fine early season, as I found this year. Getting a low middle bat and a high middle bat is unnecessary. Some peoples game are not suited to low middle bats.
I wouldn't say 2 pair of pads is necessary as if i have had a sweaty innings on a saturday then leave the pads out over night and they are dry!
-
You also may just be in that phase of I want lots of kit to impress people, I have done this before and had at times 3 bats and 3 pairs of gloves.
It was completely pointless, i had a favourite pair of gloves that I always wore and 1 bat i used regardless of conditions.
-
Well the difference between ends is not going to be as different as an uncovered wet April pitch is going to be from a 3 week baking in the sun August pitch
-
No, i genuinely am looking for advice here guys so im onlyarguing back with you so that we can get both ideas out :)
-
Seems like a great logic.......
-
Well if theres only one argument coming from one side, then the arguments are going to become more diluted, wheras if i chalenge these ideas then the more powerful ideas come out,
-
Its all personal preference! If your a good player it shouldn't matter what kit you got, you should still be able to bowl, bat and field just as well...
-
Or you just annoy everyone......
-
Or you just annoy everyone......
. LOL
-
Or you just annoy everyone......
In what way?
-
Right, buy a top of the range bat from the forum sponsors that is made for performance over looks.
Then buy top of the range gloves with pittards palm. If you wear inners then buy a sh!t load of them.
Buy top pads with removable inners that you can take out to dry/wash
That gear will last you if you buy top of the range,
job done
-
Sounds good advice liam...
-
Sensible advice
-
Fiar enough, I'm still undecided whether to buy this kit from Ayrtek, Chase, BUlldog or Vulcan, but none of them do Pittards i dont think, but if i buy two bats, then i can store one and with a big bulk buy then i get a discoutn as well :)
And it is indeed good advice :)
-
But, i can't stand using inners, i did for a couple of games but didn't like it, so if i dont wear inners then my gloves will get sweaty and then lose grip etc, so imo 2 pairs of gloves is important..
-
lol who wrote your signature thebd11?
"talks to much bull," :D
-
2 pairs of gloves I usnderstand but all the rest isn't necessary. Get what Liam said and perhaps 2 Ayrtek Elite gloves therefore if you have a spare pair of gloves that are really good.
-

i did
-
but two pads means they can be interchanged over time, one more heavy pair if im facing some decent wuick bowling, one much lighter pair if im playing my own age group club t20 because all the padding isnt necessary so i can run faster etc?
-
No
-

Ok, 2 pairs of gloves I understand then. Make sure they both have pittards. Try not to get gloves with white wrist bands and overly white design as they will get grubby easily.
Same with pads don't get ones with white inners as they will get grubby easily.
-
tbf, i dont want an ultra light pair with little padding when im playing club adults or county, whereas i dont need all that padding if im playing little level and need to run more ?
Perhaps you don't agree, fiar enough, but can you at least see where i'm coming from ?
-
Get Morrants then! Amazing protection and lightest on the market
-

If thats a joke then its not funny and if it isn't a joke then OH MY GOD...seriously.
You would be surprised at some of the pads you can get that are both light and protective.
I have Ricky Ponting pads. Stupidly light with test match protection
-

The Bulldog gloves have pittards so might be persuaded to go there, but sthere pads fit this category as well so might swing that way, everywhere has an appeal.,
but its not a joke
-
why say that about yourself?
but on topic - i can see the desire for 2 bats but for different reasons. If one breaks then you can keep using a similar bat whereas if your low middled bat breaks then you end up using a high-middled bat on a low and slow wicket. Personally i would have 2 bats with middles fairly similar e.g low middled and a mid-low middled bat :)
tbh i think your over-complicating everything a bit
-
its true i do, its something im working on ;)
well i might be getting the two bats with low, and with high, with a lower (2) grade for net
-
Why????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
-
Why????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
why what?
-
Why get two completely different bats?
-
foor two completely different wickets. Why im buying them over the winter so i can get used ot them both and not 2 weeks before the season
-

-
i disagree tbf, if a bat snaps and it ent my fault then ill get a refund, if it breaks through overuse and wear, then ill buy a new one , but i still think high and low middles work much better :) IMO, but im open to all opiniions and can see where youre coming from :)
-
Having 2 completely different bats would be hell!
I have 2 bats, but just because i have only just received my Redback. I will use the Redback every training session this winter and then come May i will be used to it. I will then use it every training session throughout the summer. You get a feel for a bat and you know where the middle is. Having a net bat is pointless even if it is the same spec. It will feel different and play differently.
My old bat I am keeping as it is a special bat, a mate scored a double hundred not out with it. Aged 15
-
I am sure any and everyone will agree. That once you have netted with a bat and got used to it then you will be able to you it on any god dam surface you want will same affect.
-
Thats a shame, I was going to make an offer for the spare bat Liam! ;)
-
yes but im sure you will agree that if i go for the more modern profile, with more of the wood behind the middle, which is the style i like then with the middle being low then it wouldnt be great to play pull shots :)
but im going to alternate use of them throughout the winter, so i will get use to it :)
Craig, what offer?
-
Being tall then I don't play pulls or hooks so I play drives on the back and front foot. I have a low-mid middle but I just stand tall so I hit the ball lower on the bat. No point me having a high middle. Besides, if I time it higher up on the bat then it will still go for 4.
-
Thats a shame, I was going to make an offer for the spare bat Liam! ;)
ha, I could be tempted mate. I just need to nail down the wielding of my Redback to make sure its the bat for me!
-
but im not tall, so i do have to use higher up the bat
-

Craig, what offer?
Surely a modern profile is a bat with wood everywhere!
-
Are you talking about a bat with a high concetration of wood in the middle as i'm sure your timing isn't that good at 14/15.
And craigs offer was aimed at me
-
Not you don't. I'm saying I have a lower middle and am fine on the backfoot on bouncier tracks. Just get a bat you're used to and you'll know which shots will go and which won't so everytime you play a shot it comes out of the sweetspot.
-
ok perhaps not a modern profile, dont know the name for it, but one where the wood is behind the middle wand less of it in the shoulders
sorry, and yes, but my timing is constantly improving :) i hope anyway.........
but if i have a low middle and someone bowls a ball that i want to pull, surely the pull will come out of the top of the bat, and then i wont be middling it like i could be ?
-
exactly. Get 1 bat, stick to it, get used to it and you can time a ball on any surface.
-
Pick the length quicker then
-

So get a bat with a high middle!
-
yes but if i get a high middle then i can pull well, but the driving is affected which is a key area of the game which you need in the april wickets,
and colesy, im not don bradman so cant do that everytime, so have to play the % game
-
This is ludicrous. It's obvious what the forum's general opinion is on the matter, 2 gloves, 1 pads and 2 bats if you must.
-
fair and concise :)
-
believe me, driving is not affected with a high middle on any surface. I cope quite well. It all comes down to knowing the bat.
When companies say their bats have high middles they are middle up in the splice, they generally have long middles stretching down.
You would be surprised how many drives you think come low of the bat that are actually quite high
-
I can't play the pull or cut, so I don't play it, I have other shots that score me runs in those areas, like dabs or flicking it. You don't have to play every shot!
-
Unforunatrely one of my favourite shots definitely comes low on the bat
the mox over mid on :)
-
Mate, you've being fairly pedantic here. Not every single ball will come out the middle. Especially not if you're pulling, cutting, driving, etc. It's gonna be down to you to play the ball with the right timing, picking the length. Like you said, you're not Bradman, which means that you will make mistakes. It's what happens. 2 bats at most, 1 or 2 gloves, and a pair of pads. 1 lid, 1 thigh guard, 1 bag, 1 box. Simple. And Colesey is right. With most deliveries, you can play more than one shot to it, which includes the leave.
-
Again you would be surprised, very little effective shots come of the bottom 3 inches of the bat. That area of the bat is largely un-used apart from digging out yorkers
-
the leave :O, not a favourite shot of mine i must admit ;) , but i do think that a duffle bag will prove necessary on the tube :)
-
every good batsmen has to have a good leave.
-
oh yeh i play it i will play it, just i play in t20s mainly where obviously u cant play too manym granted it has a role, but not a massive one, and in 45 over cricket i dont really come in earlier than 35 overs :(
-
So you bat for about 10 overs in adults and you think you're amazing............Right........
-
no 45 overs being representative county
-
You say if the bat breaks through manufacturers fault you will get a refund - you have a point but if you had to send the bat off as proof and have another sent to you that process would probably take a week or two then by your logic you will have to make do with a bat you cant use on that type of wicket.
Im fairly tall 6"2ish and my current match bat has a fairly high middle, i have no problem driving, in fact i prefer driving with a high middle as i can play the ball at the top of its bounce and drive balls i couldnt with my old bats. I also have no problem pulling with a higher middle- i just play a little squarer/later. Most of my old bats have low middles but i have had no real problems except my first 1-2 hours in the nets.
-
so why the hell do you want a sh!t load of kit then? Your like i used to be, the kid that got into the senior team and then thinks their gods gift. you want a to buy a load of gear. I quickly realised that it was pointless as i started to learn the value of money.
I worked my way up from number 11 aged 12/13 and now open the batting aged 17. its not your kit it your skills. and good players can play with any kit.
-
but as you all point out with glee, perhaps im not the best batsman around, so can't play the 2 different wickets with one bat, so need the 2 bats to help me :)
i dont think im that great, i think i need a new kit cus im moving from harrow and youths softs to sh and small mens softs
-
reading that again i sound like i'm saying that i'm amazing.
I'm not, i'm just saying that you need to realise that it pointless blowing a load of money on kit!
-
its not the entire deposit of fort knox that im speniding here, im working my (No Swearing Please) off till i get blisters on my hands, so that blows away the argument that im the spoiled wannabe kid that gets it all for him , so i work for the kit, i earn the money, i hopefully do well ;), i dont think im amazing i think i can go somewhere with hard work and good coaching :)
-
By cheap then if your changing from youths to senior gear.
Moving up from a harrow to a short handle you will need to work hard to get used to a bigger bat. Trying to get used to 2 different bats as your first sh bats is not a good idea.
Same with pads. When i moved into mens pads i went from expensive one with the idea of them fitting me well and lasting ages. New bigger pads will feel different and my effect your movements at first
-
ive used and dabbled with mates and dads old sh bats all summer so used to them by now, and my harrow is 2 9 with 2 extra thick grips on so i know about the weights ;) ,
and ive used my mates softs and they good :)
-
What i'm saying is, don't spend big when moving from youth softs to senior softs and when going from harrow to sh.
Also, when moving up from a harrow. Don't go for 2 drastically different shaped bats!
-
Unless you're playing either a very high level of club cricket i.e Premier league for 1st XI or Regional stuff and above i.e North/South
of England, then you do not need more than 1 bat. This is what I found out, it just never works, as you find form with one bat and you don't want to leave it, meaning that the other bat becomes underused.
1 bat - performance based and that you like the weight of.
2 pads is just ridiculous, again only recommended if you play gaes in coloured kit, even then who cares?
2 pairs of gloves I can understand (even 3!) as my hands sweat prefusingly when I bat due to my set up, grip etc.
Thigh pad set (inner/outer).
1 helmet
1 Big duffle bag, I have found this is the best optio for almost any cricketer as my duffle (GN PP Duffle) fits all batting and keeping gear, with ease. Plus clothes for and after and accesories.
Wear inners, with any pair of gloves, this reduces the damage to your expensive gloves.....
-
Well I spent this season sing a high Middled Harrow and last year with a low middle so I'm used to both. I wore my mates original le pads and they were a good fit
-

You don't know about the weight of bats.
Your bat is 2lbs 9oz with '2 extra thick grips' That probably way around 2.5oz each (you'd be surprised)
Meaning your bat is 2lbs 4oz with an extra 5 oz added to the top making it feel lighter. i should imagine it picks up like a feather. When actually using a bat with a 2lbs 9oz pick up rather than what i think would be a 2lbs 6oz pick up on your current match bat
-

How tall are you? I had this year GM LE pads in mens and they a tad too big for me at 6ft 1. thats with long legs and short body,
Also using a low middle last year and a high one this years. You would be surprised by the difference a year makes!
I had a low middle M&H in the 2008 season and then went to a mid middle blade in the 2009 season. for 1 game i used a low middle m&h again and could not get on with it even though i used the exact same bat a season earlier to great effect!
-
Thebd11 either your nuts, or just a prized tool, you contradict yourself alot, I use a bat with a low middle, I pull the ball, cut the ball Drive the ball perfectly well
-
I have to admit that this year I did have 2 bats in the bag. I had the high middled bat which I ended up using for 90% of the season, and a GM Purist which I dont think got used because, even on wet pitches, the high middled bat was useful!
thebd11, I would recommend your bats to be identical in shape, however, its your choice! :)
-
Thanks you 2!
I have a high middle and can play any shots on any surface!
Well not any shot! Just the ones i can play.
-
I use a bat with a low middle and one with a high middle. I vary it. And they were the small mens version and I'm 5 9 ishh. And yes I know about the grips it does pick up light which is why I'm going to buy a similairly light bat. After listening to opinions I'm going for
2 x Custom Made Bats ( high + low) NO NET BAT
1 x Pads CONCESSION
2/3 Probably 2 x gloves 2 not 3
1 x duffle
1 x kit bag
1 x ACIS Elite
1 x thigh pad
1 x spikes
1 x trainers
Couple pairs of inners, sweatbands etc.
-
You said you don't like inners!!! And 2 different bats are pointless!
-
Why not get 2 helmets? One with a bigger peak for sunny days and one with a smaller peak for cloudy days!?
-
Lol good call :L

So you've basically gone against everything we've said. Seriously, who are you? Ricky Ponting?
-
So you've basically gone against everything we've said. Seriously, who are you? Ricky Ponting?
nah ricky has a net bat :D
-
How ever many days you play, 1 bat, 1 decent pair of gloves and pads would last you 2 seasons.
-
And Ponting's good
-
And ponting probably dealt with the bare minimum of kit until he made it into top grade cricket. Being sensible enough to not spend too much money, instead working hard to get better so he could get paid to have kit!
-
Honestly I don't like inners but if they work as well as I'm told then I might. Not sure tbh Liam, I might, merely because I can :)
also I might get 3 pairs of spikes, each with a different spike configuration, also different trainers for every indoor training venue, perhaps I'll get a slave to change my bat if two ends of the pitch are different? What ya reckon?
1000 runs Inc net sessions. Let's say u score 20 in a net session and average 20 when u play. 1000/40 is 25 nets and or matches!
Colesy do you know me?
In the country wide county competition I was the joint top wicket taker. NATIONALLY.
Oh and with the bat (my second trade) I averaged 35.8 for county.
Not a bad year
-
3 pairs of spikes, you are grade one spanner!
Nationally blah blah, your 14 and dont even use mens balls yet do you?
-
As a matter of fact we do. And I was being sarcastic with spikes and trainers
-
Ok great but still you are 14! And with spikes i wouldnt put it past you.
As freddie says "we'll see where you are in 10 years, this game has a funny way of biting you up the a**!" "bet you wont be here! (playing vounty cricket)"
But good luck to you, dont forget to post pics of your kit, if it all fits in 1 photo!
-
What's your name bd, I'll have a search...
-
My bat's got me 1000 runs this year still going strong and you were joint top wicket taker, but not anymore. No 14 year old should be spending that much on equipment when they're not even facing really good bowling. U15's at county you're looking at 75mph tops. I know as my Glos U-15's mate bowls 70 when he puts it in.
I'm sorry but you're not good enough to warrant all of this gear.
-
Chris Beaumont-Dark, play cricket me :) and yes let's see where I am shall we
-
'Oh I'm the top wicket taker nationally'.... Have a big shiny medal to go on your kit bag. Don't think there's enough room in this forum for your ego...
-
Here is what I would suggest; (;-) )
3 Bats (High, middle and low)
6 Gloves (2 each traditional, split and another design)
3 Pair of pads (Traditional, Modern and Moulded)
3 Type of thigh guards (Bullet proof such as stripper (you never know if a terrorist attack breaks out), flexible and firm style)
2 type of arm guard (Flexible and firm)
2 Helmets (In summer you sweat alot so two pair of helmets)
3 type of box (high, middle and low)
Hope it helps :P
-
Your wit never ceases to amaze me, some people deserve a stand up routine all of their own. Colesy said I wasn't good without ever knowing the facts so I wa merely straigtening the record. If my ego was that big, I would have posted that ages ago and told you all as soon as I joined the forum, not after 350 posts
-
CD you forgot the 7 pairs of whites per game, 3 for fielding in case you get dirty and have to switch, 2 for batting if you slide or get a little rain on you and then 1 "cool" kit for lounging on the boundary 8) plus a lightweight pair if you want to run really quickly! :D
-
How many people on this forum have you asked for sponsorship?
-
Guys, perhaps I've not come accross right and for that I apologise. I'm just a 14 year old looking for advice. I admit that I was cocky, ignorant and perhaps rude. For that I apologise and hope that this issue does not become too serious
-
U14's is not big time, you should be happy with any sponsorship or discount you get! I'm being serious, you have nothing to offer companies really at your age...
-
You only got 350 posts from asking people to check there PM cos you've asked them to sponsor you...
-
Pm me for that info
-
wate a couple of years if your still excelling then companies may come running! But just remember 14's is a long way form mens cricket.
-
Pm me for that info
Not sure he is THAT bothered!
-
Anyway i think this is getting very out of hand and off topic, i think he knows what kit he wants and before this escalates too much we should stop!
