thats some low middle davey :) good start tho mate
-
agreed tom i could do with some advice on the toe not quite got the hang of it
-
yeh i found the edges the hardest to even up on my 1st effort....wasnt bad at the old woodwork or raw materials at school so being fairly hand on helped i think. just a case of picturing what u want and then not getting to carried away with taking off too much.
-
the binding is now the worst part....takes forever lol
-
the polishing was wondering what other have used i could get somebody to proffesionally polish them up but want to do it myself any help???
got some more clefts coming grade 2 so best start learning fast...
-
yeah the buffing is where im lacking too to get it up to a decent finish ???
-
yes got a compound here a special ingredient all i need now is one of the mop head tool things or might get a stand alone buffer...
got to say the travisher is a top tool in my eyes i enjoyed whittling this beast down to the tooth pick might need a drawknife and possibly a number 4 travisher
anybody got any other tips
-
i only use a draw knife and travisher mainly.....not that im by any means know what im doing!!! but the last 2 part mades i got off of mike that needed some shaping and the handles finishing were pretty easy in comparism to starting from scratch i thought
-
i mainly used the travisher and sanders the spine was a bugger i found things towards the end fell into place
-
good on ya mate, worth a try i reckon, i wouldn't mind having a go myself, when you want me to come round then? :)
-
Dave . . . why dont you quit whist youre still ahead mate. . . lol
Only joking. . ..
I think not bad for a first effort. .. . . at least it looks like a bat eh...
-
because i suspect i can do this i have just finished the toe ...
got more clefts coming i enjoyed it and will keep at it unlike most
-
Good on you mate, it must be quite therapeutic making your own bat. . .
-
yes and no when you get the travisher and scrap half the bat away mate and look at your edges and see one is smaller than the other but yes i like it.
I would say this though my hat goes out to the batmakers of the world i started with a 4lb lump and butchered it down to 2lb 4oz but i have herd working with english willow is easier hense the 10 clefts coming
-
hense the 10 clefts coming
10 :o big buy , what grades you getting , a mix i presume ??
-
all 2 to 3 mate keep me going over the winter months
-
Its a good idea to draw on the shape of the edges as a guideline so you dont whittle away too much
-
Dave, that's terrible!!!, but we all have to start somewhere, copy the edge profile and trace it on, then work hard on the spine, keep it, don't hack it off.
-
bit harsh mike the spine is streight and so are the edges...
agreed i took more off than planned indeed...
-
I feel it's better to be honest and it's only my opinion, then when the next ones comes out a lot better we can splash a little praise on you.... not too much mind.....
-
I say fair play for having a go and if you enjoy it why not, I think that looks pretty good for a first effort.
I will shortly have more spare time and also want to have a go, I have access to a properly solid work bench (looks like it has been there for ever) with a decent vice and a friends dad is willing to lend me a drawknife and a spokeshave.

pro how much were your 10 clefts ? pm me if you dont want to discuss
