Why are laminated bats outlawed for use in matches under MCC rules?
The answer is that the process of laminating the bat can if done right create a more powerful blade. The methods used and the reasons behind the laminated bats available on the market differ so don't assume that all are created to be more powerful. One of the methods is to create a bigger bat by using a drier piece of wood on the back to give a bigger bat and a lower density blade.
Here is an example of how extreme you can go if you want to create a bigger bat with a normal weight, the Liger weighs 2.11 and has 54mm edges.
It is for sale if someone wants to make me an offer, I've never been able to get another despite them making this one for me as a sample.

Is this what people are looking for with a laminated bat?

dam!! thats a big bat how much? lol
-
i like the one on the left :D is that also the lammy?
-
It is a 3lb bat.
-
yeah pretty sure the nembury was just to show how big a stadard size bat is and how much it weighs where as the laminate is 2.11 and absolutly massive!
contentder for the h4l xxxxl
-
Yeah i am not saying its a bat for me or i want it! Just saying it looks nice :D
-
mike is that b52 for sale??! ;)
-
Interesting. The laminate I got from Craig appears to have a huge chunk of drier wood on the back. I wonder.... best get it in the nets!

Not that one, but I have a couple of B52's here, that one is a Players, the others are SPS grade.
-
Mike what did you honestly think on my Lam bat that I sent you was the CA one you put your stickers on?
-
The volume of willow in the CA Gel seems to be better than the average, but this seems to be the only performance benefit from the design. This one is the absolute extreme of this method. The other method does not require a huge volume to give the benefit.

there are lots of cherrys on that players!! for u to use that mike it must be something special?
why not use a sps?
-
You use what you like, I've used it a fair bit but now using a TT.

other method?

like this liger ?
-
not sure if i am honest, but the liger looks like its the volume enhancing method, but could be worng!
-
The Liger has a thick face as the method would the same as the CA Gel, Malik or SF bats on the market, they use a cosmetically better face so they can sell more higher grade bats. However the Liger has had a very low density rear section which makes it a massive bat for the weight, that is its performance improvement. The other has another method of improving performance without being bigger.
-
still curious about this other method.
-
Go on Mike, spill the beans.... Talking of "adjusted bats", did the Modulus make it to you ok?
-
It did, a nice big oval handle and will ask the question about getting it glued but think you were right and it is most likely too far gone. I seem to remember that they had a version which was sliced open, scooped out and refilled with foam, I've not seen this one before.
-
watching Sarah Beeney's latest house programme and they used foam to fill gaps in foundations and fix subsidence instead of underpinning. The foam expands and fills the gaps in the soil and then sets with the strength of concrete. In some cases it can lift a house back to it's original position. Would be pretty handy in a bat.

Ah, I tried to buy one of these more than ten years ago, but whoever it was that was supplying changed the order and gave me a better standard Insignia because there were issues with the honeycomb structure breaking and coming apart from the wood. Thought I'd take a chance on this one, but as you see, crack is just a bit too big!
-
Is it possible to get a laminate implementing both performance methods, the higher low density wood at the back and this top secret method also.... Im guessing that would be one serious performing blade
-
Maybe, but the amount of work required would make it a very very expensive bat, think Laver Signature prices.
-
I'm guessing the top secret method is currently being used/abused by various 1st class and test cricketers, hence why it's top secret. I know of stories regarding broken bat faces getting repaired in laminate fashion and therefore being legal at the highest level.

Ouch...... Il get saving

There comes a point in all this where I'd say 'sod it, I'm going to use my vastly inferior 1 piece grade one handmade bat'
-
if you can afford one....
-
I use a 1 piece grade one handmade bat, but those wanting to push always end up looking for these styles of bats.

At the end of the day given the standard that most of us play, it wont make enough of a difference to be worth the cost. I have seen players smash 50's with Kashmire planks - in league first team cricket - and make 0 with a sponsored GN bat (he was a surrey player at the time)
-
"S0d it, I'm going to take my pick from my vast range of single pieces of willow and still score bu99er all runs"
-
would the other method be multiple laminations:-
