hey guys,
im heading down south on friday for many reasons and not this one exactly. but the chalet, ive heard many things about it. for example the reject bin picking up cheaper bats (sort of like salix rogues) and how small it is.
so just to save some time on the friday/saturday i will be trying to go there either day. i assume it has opening times? and is it still even open? havent heard anything about it in a while so just unsure. if anyone could let me know any information about it times, whats exactly there etc that would be a great help and really appreciated.
regards
chip :)

Last time i went there (this time last year) anyone could walk in. With regards to the bargain bins, I wasn't looking at a bat so didn't look at any
-
The Chalet is their retail outlet, so it is open to anyone.
They do not make the bats there, not it is their main storage warehouse so it is subject to stocking.
However it is an excellent cricket shop that smells of linseed and English Willow.
Generally lots of bats on offer and full range of softs.
The opening hours are not too log and they open late on a Saturday when it is normally staffed by the over enthusiastic John.
He is about 75 and i am sure his heart is in the right place, but is regularly struck down with verbal diarhia and is one of these people who knows everything, or knows someone that.... and is not affraid or embarressed to say so.
This combined with a huge gulf of knowledge in the making of cricket bats i feel is quite a dangerous combination. I am 100% positive that quite a lot of kids or less knowledgable people walk out of their on a Saturday with the wrong bat for them.
He will do things like pick up a 5 grainer and say " aahhh yeah, look at that. This is perfect. This will be an absolute beauty" etc etc
Try and make it there on the Friday if you can and you might manage to avoid him.
The also sometimes have some pros bats in the back room. I cant remember if they are 265 or 300 and something, but they are about the best bats i have seen.
I live around the corner , but have never bought a bat there yet. Living in Sussex you do see some of ST's bats and huge Gayle monsters and peopl ewho know people, so i am waiting and hoping that one day i will get an invite to the workshop and get them to whittle me something special.
No doubt that Newberys produce some of the best bats about, but dont get sold into something that isnt!
Enjoy, and dont take your credit card

I also live nearby and can vouch that everything steelcouch says is absolutely true. I purchased a bat which he assessed as barely ok and it is a beauty!
-
a 5 grainer beauty wahooo, im definitely making a visit lol
id love to see some of the pro bats there and see how similar it is to my Talisman bat
-
I would also like to take a trip to the chalet, but i feel that my bank balance would be in danger.

I would also like to take a trip to the chalet, but i feel that my bank balance would be in danger.
followed by a net and a beer maybe?
-
lol - if you are going to the Chalet, you want to do the Kent/Sussex tour and visit Andrew at the Barn, the Chalet and Matt at H4L. Say goodbye to bank balance....
-
followed by a net and a beer maybe?
If its just us two, Get a bowling machine, But it sounds like a plan Mike.
Shall we just visit all the bat makers in the area? Matt @ H4L, Salix, Could be an expensive day.
-
ok mate maybe wait til payday in jan and we'l arrange it
-
The indoor nets there are pretty good and the pub sells Harveys, so....
-
I wish I had the money to go on these journeys! I've replied to your pm steelcouch btw. A reply would be appreciated...thanks for correcting me on the chalet, that was all I'd heard though, until now.. :)

OK,
I am considering your offer of some grips which i think is generous, but it is not urgent and i wont be rushed for the sake of £1
I have already got a couple set aside for me through Peplow as part of a bat purchase ,but they are with a friend.
I quite like the concept of the combi grip, but i dont need ten of them if the quality or feel is (No Swearing Please) so i need to see them in the flesh first and they are with the guy who actually bought the bat through my advice.
I wasnt going to get back to you until i had something to tell you Johan, but....
-
hey again guys,
thanks for all the information, been a great help. as youve said is it all retail prices no haggling? or is haggling allowed? and would it be worth going down just to have a look? im down there on the friday think im busy so saturday would be the option. anyway to avoid that guy? haha.
im down there anyway yes, but on google maps it says the chalet is around another hour down souther than where im staying really worth the distance? especially if i doubt im going to be buying a bat as funds at the moment are empty?
give us your opinions please all welcome :)
thanks again

Personally, I would narrow down what I and others thought was the right bat for me
before I went some like Newbery as there are shed loads of bats and it can get confusing
having said that I honestly love the chalet and all that it stands for
up to you buddy
there is ahggling but they were taken over by venture capitalists about 18 months ago and are much more about sales than they once were
more fun in the old days but probably the way of the world
