Morning all
In the name of R&D i forked out £112.00 for an Albion Ultimate 98 which was purchased thorugh Sports online on sunday evening...its turned up today which was a great turnaround time.
I was intrigued to see just how light the Ultimate 98 was with the "carbon fibre" shell now being used by Albion and their claims to be the lightest helmet on the market.
I broke out the trusty salter scales as have been previously used for such weigh offs!.....Ill let the pictures do the talking as below........
Albion Ultimate 98 with Ti grille

ACIS Elite with Ti grille

ACIS Premier with Ti Grille

I would be interested what others ACIS Premier/Elite helmets weigh that have them on here in various designs etc in comparism to our stock shells.
In summary
Albion Ultimate 98 = 804g
ACIS Elite = 648g
ACIS Premier = 701g
As a side note these helemts have the 2009 Ti grille on which is 174g comparred to our 2010 with was 150g...Also the ACIS Raw will be lighter again due to the fact is hasnt got any paint on it as such....I will weigh these once we have some back in the office.

show off :)
-
Now your R&D is over
I'll buy the Albion off you ;)
-
So you mean a company just spowted some crap that's not true to sell something I don't believe it
-
You've got to be careful with the whole 'carbon fibre' claims made by some companies, not necessarily just in cricket. A rep told me some camera tripod manufacturers who produce alarmingly cheap 'carbon fibre' tripods just take a standard steel/ally frame and put a thin layer of CF on the top, so it looks the job. Totally reverse logic, as as we all know, the joy of CF is its relatively low weight.

About bloody time you cracked the whip Thomas!!
I love a good bit of R&D, especially when it runs in my favour. come on, you must have been super smug after that mate. I would have been all over Albion with this!! William my good man you have just seen the Albion isn't as good as an Ayrtek, now stop being tight and buy a RAW!! We all know you have deeper pockets than you make out pal ;) hahaha

Will you challenge their claim to be:
"Safest and lightest cricket helmet available - superior strength to weight ratio achieved using F1/ Aircraft design technology"
-
Did you write that for them Tom?? Looks familiar
-

I think they are lovely mate, just really not my cup of tea regarding style that's all! Tom will be bossing the market soon enough I'm sure.
Weighing up a Masuri ti or Albion ti...I don't know what to get and I have massive nut
-
Well people are starting to ban the masuri for not being safe enough so go for the Albion I would say
-
Yeah Albion, if you really don't want an Ayrtek...They do offer some great protection though!! :)

Are they? Where is this happening?
-
Better to ask people who know more but I have been told Derbyshire ccc have stopped their players using them

I am sure Kieron Pollard will be at the front of the Ayrtek queue...Dom Cork saw to that eh?

-
Get in line Colesy ;)

Were is the proof in this none have banned so far
-
tom, what would you say in safer, a masuri Ti or an albion Ti? the albion being their top 'plastic' one
-
Albion
-
is that because of the curve the the peak and their strengthening ridges underneath the peak?
-
It would help if he used a titanium one. But yeah, Masuri grilles are better
-
ive been working with carbon fiber for nearly 10 years now and it great to see it used for what it should be used for strength and feather light, AYRTEK are doing great things and the company they work with are top class
-
didnt know u were in the industry mate....yeh not quite sure the other brands are grasping why you use carbon fibre in a product exactly ???
who do u work for mate?
-
i work for myself manly bike parts now a days but know the guys work and have finished some of the products, good bunch of blokes
-
I don't know what to go for now. Either the Albion 98 ti or an Albion with masuri ti grill...

Reading the posts, the Ayrtek ACIS would be a better bet!
-
I was at GCCC today exchangine some gear, and I decided to try on an Ultimate 98 helmet. I use a masuri ti and to me, the albion did feel light on my head, but it was as if the helmet was square and the front and back, it didn't feel rounded at all, kinda weird to me anyway. I think I'll stick to my masuri for now and maybe get an ayrtek next year as they seem really good. What's the new website as I can't seem to find it?

I am starting to come round to the idea...I just prefer the look of the Albion and Masuri

I thought that was the name of the website but it just seemed to dissapear, now I know why.
-
Tom, any chance of doing some RnD on the forma helmets? It seems it is the preferred choice of the Indian team.
-
No idea where to buy them from mate ???
-
i have been after one for over a year
-
yeh dont seem to be the easiest product to find....never a good sales ploy!

-
that is a monster of a ratchet system on the back!!!
-
the peak is fairly wavy and insecure looking on it
-
I'm going India soon. will try to pick one up
-
yeh im sure they are much more common out there mate...would be good to see how the measure up
-
If not I could ask Bhushan to bring one?
-
whens he due over? few months yet id think? got kit due over shortly so im sure i could ask our softs supplier to chuck one in with the package if not too:)
-
Well he's sorting the paperwork now but he said around April
-
My first ultimate 98 which I bought on saturday weighed 650 grams, it was a bit dodgy with the carbon fibre really dried out in one part so I went back in on sunday got a replacement from GCCC and this one weighs in at 670 grams. This puts the albion on par with your Acis Elite and makes it lighter than your premier. Why does your's weigh so much more than mine ???
-
Our Acis elite is 643g so lighter than 650g and 670g at any rate. Fitting our 2010 grille would bring it down to 619g as well.
Perhaps there is a variation between Uk and Aus models ?

Using different scales!
-
Yeah may account for a part of it, the ones i have used were digital ones that i have used for everything else to try and keep things in perspective.
-
Yeah, your best model is still lighter, but yeah maybe different models for Aus and UK. Just out of curiosity, do you deliver to Australia?

Do you calibrate them daily? ;)

tom sends lids all over the world mate so guess aus wouldnt be an issue
-

No need, I think the universally recognised £5 Asda digital scales are being used.
-
these were £14 salter ones mate so really pushed the boat out..... :)
yeh we ship worldwide and have sent several orders to Aus already

Consistency in the manufacturing of carbon fibre needs to be done with pretty advanced technology and processes. Getting a constant weight (+/-) a few grams either side of it is obviously vital to quality control.
