Below is a collection of pro bats which I've got kicking around in my bag and office at the moment. Excuse the poor quality photos, if there's any requests for particular bats. Let me know.
From L - R
Adam Gilchrist's Calibre Reserve - Used whilst at M'Sex
Matthew Hayden's MMi3 - Used for net practice in India
Dennis Lillee Combat - Don't know the history of this one!
Marcus Trescothick's GM Hero - Used for 100 against WI in Champions Trophy Final
Nick Compton's Puma Kinetic 2010 - Used last season whilst at Somerset, completely knackered but nice shape.
Gareth Andrew MMi3 - Used at the Oval last season for his debut 100, signed and now in a case.
Andrew Symonds GN - Restickered for use in a couple of IPL games, then given to copy whilst he was at Surrey.

whose is the heaviest?
-
what weights Gilly's bat and was it made by Mr Millichamp?

All a very similar weight (between 2lb 8-10).
Heaviest is Gareth Andrew's bat, weighing in at just over 2lb 11oz. It's the lighter of the 2 he used last season.
-
I've got thicker hair than that Combat!! Amazing looking bit of gear.
Gilly's bat looks a corker

It's around 2lb 8oz, 99% sure it's not a Millichamp. Not actually sure who's made it, but I'd guess Indian made. It's a legit Puma bat, a very good one at that.
-
Which will/have you used? or are they all to stare at only ? :D
Which is your personal fave?
(also tom pm'd you regarding something completely different)

that Gilly's one is massive for a 2.8......
just goes to show you dont need a heavy bat eh
-
The Gilchrist bat is truly something special. He's their headline player and you can tell that due to the bats he gets.
Gareth Andrew one is my personal fave though as it has something sentimental about it.
-
surprised he didnt want to keep it!!
-
Any for sale?
-
Unfortunately not.
-
Love the prfile of Nick comptons bat. Is that the standard kinetic profile?
-
Loving Gilly's Puma!!
-
Impressive stuff Tom!
Gillys bat is something special, and just wondering that if its legit Puma do you think it is made by Rob Pack?
Also interesting to see that none of these bat look like low density bats.
-
Gilly's bat is a corker!! :D Top stuff, nice collection of pro-used bats mate :)
-
Like Gilly's but also love the look of Tresco's Hero maybe just remember Tresco + Vaughan at the top. Of the order for England
-
I would chose Tres' GM over all those other bats, having had a swing with one of his Catalyst a few years ago I can safely say that the pick up to actual weight ration is amazing! And the way his check drives rocket into the boundary boards, they must be some awesome will.
Tom, does MT still have the same bottom hand set up on his Mongoose bats, I would imagine so on the cor3, but what about the MMi3?
Awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xchvjgq8IV0
-
I don't think Tres's bats pick up amazingly or that they're ever so special. I suppose the shape is almost a little dated now and I'm giving him all different types of shapes now to try them out. We obviously want to keep him as close to a stock shape as possible.
His bottom hand setup is the same on both CoR3 and MMi3
-
on his mmi3 in there just a bulge halfway down the handle then?
-
His handle setup isn't that strange, his first favourite bat he had made by Julian Millichamp which had a very thick oval handle and since them he's always gone for it.
The MMi3 he has just has a thicker more oval handle all the way down. He then fiddles with them after a little.
He does know his bats (used to work for Classic Bat co.), asks very good questions about benefits of certain aspects of willow/handles and knows what he wants.
-
Ok, Thanks Tom
-
I expect you will have a few of his bats at the Taunton open day?
-
Possibly, not sure who's attending yet.
-
Nice looking bats Tom always good to see real Pro bats and when are you going to sign Hildreth then?
-

Not suprising given Gilly's very high grip and backlift, all set up for batspeed (in addition to his great timing) rather than a punch style.
I was at Meulemans in Perth once when Gilly was collecting a batch of bats. Very casual about it. He'd pick up a bat, give it a few taps on the ground, couple of 'air shots' and pronounced it as 'good' 'balance not to his liking' 'weight not right' etc. Took him about 2 minutes to select 6 bats! He wasn't concerned with grain etc.
-
I suspect that these bats ability to score boundaries is much more closely related to their users than the Willow....

Especially the Combat. Doesn't look nice willow at all.
-
I reckon the middle on that combat will be a tinny!! :(
-
I fear will that combat would snap facing 90mph bowlers, no ?
-
It's a single block of metal, it would kill your hands but probably not snap.

Groan.

Did he take just Puma's? plus I wish I could do this, it takes me ages to pick a bat.
Tom - if Gilly's puma ever needs a new home, I'm more than willing to compensate you. :)
-
When I went to visit rob pack he said gilly was very unfussy with bats only fussy about weight
-
Puts us all to shame doesn't it?
They all look nice, but none of them are anything we as lowely consumers can't or haven't had opportunity to buy.
Basically folks, those who owned them are better than we can ever hope to be, that's why they hit balls better than we do. Nowt to do with the bats. There is no such thing as a wonder bat.

Ohhh I beg to differ!

When your Redback gets you in the test side, then we'll believe it!

I agree in principle. An amazing bat wont turn a mediocre player into a test player. I reckon it is 90% talent, 10% gear.

I think it'll be far nearer 99:1 split. I'd back a test level batsman with a kasmir plank to score more runs than anyone from here with any protastic ping plus bat.

when it get him into Uxbridge 1st i'll believe it
sorry leo
In truth if you know you have a good bat then it breeds confidence thus mentally telling you your better so it no harm in thinking you have a wonder bat

Beachcricket - yes all Pumas, special stock delivered for him. I also used to go 'out the back' of the shop and rummage through boxes labeled 'Martyn' and 'Langer' made them sell me a sensational unlabeled bat from JL's stash back in the day.
Ofcourse whether a player is fussy or not often depends on their personality, Gilly (who was/is a freak of nature) is unfussy (one would assume he already knows bats picked for him are super) guys like Ponting and Hussey are super fussy which fits in with their ultra preparation type personalities. Of course, test batsmen are freaks and could do well with anything. Similarly some golf pro's are highly 'techie' others barely know what the specs of their driver is and use what their sponsoring rep fits them into.
