Guys,
I have been wondering recently about how much kit people seem to buy in the search of the Holy Grail, pro bats or high spec unicorn softs...
The best bat in my club has had the same pads and gloves (mid range Hunts) for 10+ years and a knackered Hunts County Mettle 5*. Out of interest, does the best player at your club keep up with the Joneses and have new kit every season, or are they still getting life out of their SS jumbos and keeping the insulation tape people in business?

I use a SAF bat and Kookaburra softs... ;)
Actually there are a lot of Choice bats at our club which are used by the first team - the former skipper uses a Newbery (imagine that)

Ive seen loads of Choice bats about, and I like the people there, but not too sure on their bats, how do you find them?
-
Our top bat, uses a 6 year + old gm and old gm pads and gloves, his thighpad is a pillow with string stiched onto it, The only new piece of kit ive seen him own is a new spair of spikes every 2 or 3 seasons, he doesnt net, or train or anything and he is always the highest run scorer and most consistent bat every season. He must be nearly pushing 50 now also.........

decent quaity bats - mostly asian imports.
-
our two, one changes his kit a lot, the other doesnt but still uses stylish stuff sort of thing, neither are mega old school and still use the old kit!
-
We haven't got any good bats at our club haha - i joke (i think)
Ummm i think probably the two best bats at my club are a Kookaburra Biggest Kahuna and surprisingly Kookaburra ICE 250 its not exceptional but for its supposed grade it is really good
-
Starting with a new club this year so can't answer that question. Other clubs, they've tended to have a cycle time of "When things break"...

Shocked by that, I thought they did their own pressing and fitting in their shop! Ive netted a few times there, and my mate had a custom made, just I wasnt sure how I would feel about them
-
Sorry to clarify - they have two levels of bats - some are imported ones and the more expensive ones are UK made. I don't know who presses them. The guys on my team use the asian ones as they are about £70 cheaper and still really good - so why pay the extra?

Interesting to note peoples opinions on Choice. My club winter nets at Redbourn there and I know the owner (Gary) quite well. Their bats are by far the most popular brand in the Hertfordshire leagues. They do a fantastic custom service, as well as replicating favourites etc and as far as I know they are all claimed as "proudly made in Hertfordshire". In fact, they hardly do any stock or off the shelf bats as most of the bats at the store are customs waiting for pick up from the aspiring Lara's of the world.
I have just (last Saturday in fact) purchased a new one of their bats due to the Millichamp finally succumbing with their great new retro feel stickers. Had a net and its quality as per usual (I had another one a couple of years ago, and it was great too!). Curiously it was a random "stock" bat they had made for the new photo shoot for the new catalogue. Weighs in a a monstrous 2.13 with 2 grips, facing etc but picks up like a 2.8 which I ususally use.
The one thing is I cant shake the feeling that they either are supplied with clefts from Hunts, or their pod shaver was apprenticed there as they seem to share the same shoulder styling! I also wish they would sort their web-site out as it would go along way to building their reputation and image!

Bat: Readers - now dead and replaced by Slazenger SXI Elite
Gloves: GM 808 '07
Pads: GM 808 '07
Spikes: Asics 355
Lid: None

jimmy, i also net there and while browsing the sold/refurbed bats by the till, only some have the "handcrafted in hertfordshire" or whatever they say sticker on, if your bat was £120 it may be one of the asian made ones ;)
-
I net and have lessons there. Gary is clearly a top bloke.
My mates bat was 140, custom made grade 2, and it definatly isnt asian made.

No-one said he wasn't. ???
Well if its not one of the 120 ones and was custom made it obviously wasnt asian made then, although whats your mates bat got to do with it?
-
the choice bats do have the same shoulders as Hunts you are quite right.
Gary used to work for Hunts County and now runs Choice Willow.
They do sell asian imported bats as well as UK ones same as a lot of the larger names do these days.
Great bats thou,nice shape
