Alright here is my understanding, from what i have seen my record to be so far I am going to be way off ;) but here goes nothing..

1: 1 classic traditional, flat edge v shaped bat, straight face
Smaller middle, less forgiving, so you miss the middle not all the energy is transferred to the ball, hence you loose hitting power, you middle one and it flies.

2: classic modern mix, slight edge, v shaped bat, slightly bowed face
Probably the same as 1 but with better pick up...no clue to be honest...

3: Big edge, concaved, high spine
I was going to say this is essentially modern look of #1 but then started thinking about less bat rotation due to bigger edges and now i am totally confused..

4: Offset edge, slight concaving
big middle is easier said but now i am confused,,,cant be that simple

I started thinking too much at bat #2 and its been downhill since :(

Surely with a severely concaved bat the middle would not be wide?

it would because there is mass behind the edges (so im led to believe). larger edges mean the wood is distributed across the blade. thinner edges mean the wood is distributed centrally.
scoop is an example of this (edge wise anyway)
