I thought it was a no ball if the fielder had pads on the outside of his whites?

I thought only the keeper was allowed to do this.

From memory (might be wrong) , dead ball is in effect from the moment the umpire 'thinks' it, with the onus being on saying & signalling as soon as possible.  This allows the upmire to pull the game up before too much happens (should there be an injury or some such)

although i know the rule on the ball striking a fielder's helmet, it's my opinion that this rule shouldn't apply to wicket keepers. these days the helmet is absolutely part of the keeper's normal kit, with under 18s being required to wear them by law.

therefore a ball edged onto the keeper's lid and subsequently caught should really be out.

Agreed.  If its a rule that a keeper (of a certain age) must wear a helmet, then of course that's his normal attire.

If the fielder (other than wicketkeeper) wears the pads outside his trousers, then the same applies for that as well. But if it is worn inside the trousers, then you can be out caught.

shoes, shirt, pants, cap/hat will constitute part of his normal attire

Cant say Ive ever seen short leg with pads on the outside!

As far as I know only keeper is allowed to wear protective equipment outside the cloths by law.
