A very interesting little piece that a customer kindly wrote for us today.  Given his background, this is especially profound for me...

"The anatomy of the body and the way structures compensate for the stresses put on them is a vast topic, one that I have been studying for the last 20 years, since my dream of being a professional cricketer died, aged 18, with massive surgery on my spine. (I had multiple stress fractures) at the time I was playing a very good standard inc. 2nd XI county cricket.

This is a quick piece I am writing for It’s Just Cricket about the importance of good boots, and how key it is to get the correct boots, and how much it relates to a whole bunch of physical issues.

The pictures attached show lines of connective tissues that run through our bodies. Looking at these you can visualize how a restriction in the foot can create a compensation pain in the knee, lower back or even the shoulder. In my practice I see people EVERY day that have lower back pain, and their most severe restriction is in the foot or hamstrings, by treating these the back issue will disappear.  “Don’t blame the victim for the action of the criminal! ”  ie the pain is not usually the site of the issue!

Get support for your feet but also allow them to move!

I am still playing cricket an just bought the NB 40/40 and they are the best boots I have owned, support whilst allowing the ankle and feet movement. Slack the strap, perfect for batting too, so if you are and all rounder look no further!

REMEMBER your body is the most important bit of kit you own, look after it! Get good boots!"

Going into the industry at the same time as Paul, I personally thought it was a given that proper cricket shoes were an essential piece of kit for cricket. It seems many customers are not of the same view, and want to spend as little as possible in this area.

WHY?!?!?

Get the best boots you can! You are on your feet for 12+ hours a weekend if you play saturday and sunday. Why would you not get the very best you could for you feet? You can borrow things like pads and gloves, and even a bat if you are lucky. But there a few people who have spare shoes to lend, and i imagine a smaller group still who are willing to wear a set of stinky old hand me downs.

Bats are obviously the most varied and exciting part of this industry, and if seeing a brand new release for the first time didn't make me weak at the knees then you could say i'm in the wrong game. But honestly, after bats, shoes are the next thing that i look out for when it comes to the silly season of the following years new kit announcements.
