Getting the yips!!!
« on: April 30, 2015, 05:57:21 AM »

HELP!!!

The last two net sessions I've had I've developed the yips when bowling.  I'm not a full time bowler (although secretly I've always wanted to be) I just fill in with a few overs when needed but all of a sudden I have lost my run up, the ball gets stuck in my hand, I've been bowling double bouncers and beamers....I'm at a loss to know what to do.

I normally just bowl gentle outswingers at no real pace.

What can I do????

My advice would be to start again, try bowling from the coil position and build it back up in stages. Only going back to your full run when you feel fully comfortable.

It could be a mental block - try bowling a completely different style to get round it. Practise off-spin in the nets (even if it doesn't turn).

I bowled loopy slow Left Arm for many years, playing regularly and taking wickets for, my clubs 2nd XI and occasionally the 1sts. It all went wrong, and I started gripping the ball with the 'claw of Fu Manchu' and pitching it at my toes.

I now bowl deadly in-swinging wobblers through practicing over and over again in the nets. This has at least enabled me to keep playing on a Saturday and enjoying it.

(Disclaimer:  I am technically now an all-rounder. Think Ben Stokes, but with pies).

After your 50 the other day I'd say you're a genuine all rounder, a kind of Ian Austin for today's generation :)

Stop thinking about it for a start.

You have to remember what you could do and can still do and not worry about bowling a bad ball. Fear plays on a bowlers mind, "I must not bowl a bad ball" , when you are coming in to bowl. Instead the mindset should be "how am I going to get him out", concentrate on the batsman (and stumps) not your bowling. If you are in a game situation to just imagine your next ball as if you were bowling in the nets, relax and enjoy it.

Technically, bowlers struggle when they make a change it upsets there natural rhythm. Bowling at the correct pace for you is important, too slow or too quick and things can start to go wrong in the action. You need a biomechanical expert and some video analysis to explain it fully, but mindset and rhythm would be were I would start.

I'm a part time aspiring full timer like you and I got this after getting taken off by an umpire for our 1sts and reported to the league for bowling 3 (just above waste height) beamers. 2 of which were as slow as I could as I wanted to just finish the over and bury myself, and they just slipped out.

I just had a long break from bowling (not completely voluntarily), managed to forget about the problems and then just got my natural rhythm back.

Bowl accross seam and bang it in a bit harder, back of a length. I have no reason why this would work it's just what I think I would do in your situation. Not forever just until you have forced those yips out.

TRY to bowl beamers and double bouncers. Result should be you'll be bowling a perfect length.
Btw what's wrong with a double bouncer? Wish I could perfect it, never seen a batsman deal adequately with a DB.
It is only a no ball if it bounces three times, right?

3 times before the crease.. If it rolls at any point before the Crease it's a no ball
