I have a slightly different view in that you can't have Buttler as a specialist batsman at 7 and averaging 30. Give him the gloves and hope he can continue then bring Bairstow back in as a specialist batsman at 5. Hopefully he will be able to regain that form from a while ago. This should raise Bairstow's average back up again to what you'd expect.

Or, Buttler has shown he has the temperament to adapt and see how he does but if this doesn't work, maybe bring Foakes back in down the line.

I'm sure Bairstow will be back, just whether he gets the gloves or not will depend on others performances between now and SA/next summer.

Could you not argue Pope is in the squad as a frontline batsman first, and the reserve wicket keeper should the need arise?

It's exactly that.
