Bairstow...a very difficult road back?
« on: September 23, 2019, 08:37:15 PM »

So looks like it's down to the small but powerful figure of James Taylor to meet Jonny toys out to inform him he needs to reinvent himself as a top 5 batsman to get back in the team..

Bairstow retained his test contract which may or may not be a sweetener as he misses out on New Zealand....

But clearly England have made a change of direction with Butler taking the gloves, perhaps reward for a good, not spectacular, last 18 months.Something had to give in selection I think.

As ever when a regular player loses his place someone else has a chance to take a spot, Crawley,Sibley and Pope all hoping they become regulars..Crawley looks like he was picked on potential and might be on the tour for experience.

I'm sure some will think Butler is a Smith pick so he has been shown favouritism, others might think Root's mate JB had been protected from holes in his defence until now

But what next for Bairstow? Can he get back thru weight of runs, or is the door now closed despite what will be said when JT meets him?

I don't think they'll close the door. He's 29, still plenty of cricket left in him. Depends how others go I suppose and how he goes in the CC next year, plus ODI's. Butler has had a better Ashes overall and Smith wants him in the side. A break might do him good and Yorkshire could do with his batting!

Can't be that difficult. He's still on a central contract! It's not an age ago that Bairstow was widely considered England second most dependable batsman.

Real shame that Ben Foakes hasn't had a better season.

I'm not sure he does need to re invent himself
A BBC article has quoted Ed Smith saying hes been given a break to "step back, reset and come back better" and "i don't want to restrict his options but expand them"

not sure how he can expand them unless he starts to bowl as well!!!

Sounds like Smith has said go away work on the issues and score some county runs, then you'll be back in.

Certain the selectors will not close the door on him. The facts are his return with the bat has been poor over the past 2 years and he has been dropped on that fact.
What will be telling is how butler keeps and how many runs he scores and if one of Pope or Sibley take to test cricket and score runs as that will limit the places JB can fit back into the team. Then when next years CC starts it could be a shoot out between Foakes and bairstow

Looks like forum view is a temporary break and you could well be right..

He has played well in the past I did think myself there would have to be only 1 keeper batsman to make room for a younger batsman for these winter tours.

It looks like England are moving a bit towards more specialists with leach and probably Pope in the first match this winter

Could you not argue Pope is in the squad as a frontline batsman first, and the reserve wicket keeper should the need arise?

yes....Normally there are two keepers on tour but that often means the reserve keeper does not play any warm up matches and rarely gets any cricket.

I believe Ben Foakes is on standby should any injury happen to Butler..

should Butler break a finger for example Foakes you would think would come in for him. I don't think Pope although he keeps would keep in a test...or maybe he would..hard to say

Given his temperament, I wonder if he will consider giving up on red ball cricket and look to become a T20 mercenary. I am sure there will be a lot of demand for him in the T20 leagues across the world.

I think Pope will keep for the remainder of the game the foakes to play the next

Bairstow's style is better suited for 50-over and t-20 cricket. There is also a model for him to follow: Eoin Morgan.

Bairstow's road back isn't hard.
Drop the ego.
Sort his technique, soften his hands.
Score runs and be back for SA.
Accept he will need to bat at three to replace Denly or five to replace Pope (although once Pope gets going, he will be a fixture for the next ten years in my view).

Your second point might be the difficult one  :)

There has to be a space somewhere to accommodate Pope, we don’t know how he will go but he is an outstanding young player.
I think as well the number 5 spot is perfect to help him settle in, the selectors get a lot of flak but this time It looks a good call.

Denly I really like as a player, probably was a stop gap selection but has proved he can survive against quality bowling. I think he fits in well at 3 and Root back in his favoured position-4.

I’m in a minority on here I’m sure, I think Bairstow has lost his spot for a long time and will be a one day player from now on.
If England want back up to Butler I think(hope) they go to Foakes...

Well shall see I guess but picking out some young batting talent is very pleasing, England should not be a closed shop for underperforming players.

Given that he is still centrally contracted to all formats I can't imagine they are looking to keep him out long term. If he hits a few runs in the county championship he'll be back in. I suspect that they've made a big thing about dropping him to take him down a peg and get him to work on his technique which has lost its shape recently. I suspect though that like Moeen the selectors will be keeping a pretty close eye on him to see how he reacts.

The ball is really in his court now. If he knuckles down I think he has the potential to be one of the most destructive and effective batsmen in the world. If he throws his toys out of the pram he'll get nowhere. I suspect it will be the former though, I think he's made of strong stuff and despite the occasional posturing is capable of putting a real shift in.
