not personally seen one like this before.

Looks a bit gimmicky and poorly crafted but perhaps an interesting variation on the 'middling' bat.

What’s the benifit over a middling bat, the idea that a thick edge near the middle is better than one not near the middle?

not sure there 'is' any benefit really Kulli.

However - Might be that you can 'play defensive' with the middling bit but be a bit more expansive with the extended area if it is in your attacking arc.

Do people practice powerful drives cuts etc with a middling bat?  I've always assumed they were for getting your eye in in a fairly defensive/controlled way.

Why not attach a square piece of wood to a lacrosse stick that'd make it so much more challenging.

Just use the regular bat for practice, use soft balls (Bola JR balls are great) to improve your timing. I am not a fan of practice bats.
