Atomic or Carbo Handles
« on: December 14, 2011, 10:51:03 PM »

OK-- I have been having this discussion with a fellow forum member about the Gray Nicolls Atomic and Carbo ranges. I checked using the search function but there really aren't any discussion on this.

So my question is:

What is the difference between the Atomic and the Carbo handles? And why is Atomic priced higher than the Carbo-- what's the x-factor in the Atomic handle?

Thanks in advance folks.

Never been a  fan of the GN Atomic and Carbo versions. Think it is more to do with the willow grading than the "X-factor" in the handle.

Maybe someone who has taken the handles apart might know the difference.

They say stiffer handles give you more value for shots  ;)

I have both and apart from the Atomic and Carbo tags it is really difficult to differentiate the feel.

As long as it is less than 10% of the handle it is fine!

I believe the Fusions were made prior to the introduction of the handle materials rule, and if they were made today, they wouldn't fit any of the types.

If you mean the old GN carbo handle... then if it was made after the law changes if would be illegal

Atomic Handle

8 - 12 piece laminated cane handle that has springs made from carbon fibre rather then cork or rubber. Giving a stiffer handle so less energy is lost when striking a ball. Fitted with a large transparent handle cap on the end to rduce acoustic difference. Basically it was another twist on the original steel spring handle.

Carbo Handle

8 - 12 piece laminated cane handle with cork springs that has carbo fibre re-enforcement attached to the exterior of the handle from the top of the splice for about 5 inches, to offer protection to the handle from ball strike as the base of the handle is a natural stress point.  Fited with a black handle cap.

CARBON Handle

Only ever fitted within the fusion range, a 100% carbon fibre handle that weighed less than  1/3 of the weight of a cane handle. The theory was that you can keep the weight within the blade giving you a bigger profile.

Hope this helps

I had a rapier carbon, the pick up was horrible because of the light handle
