Cheating
« on: July 08, 2013, 12:08:21 PM »

Hey fellas,

Had an interesting one this weekend and have only just calmed down enough to post it on here due to the swear word limitations.

This weekend we played a "derby" friendly game away. We knew the game would be interesting but it just seemed to be one of those games.

We won which softened the blow and I took two catches stood up. However, this was my predicament.

I went out to bat No.5 when we required 20 to win. I came on and faced 4 balls of spin sensible with one edged away for a single.

Start of the next over I missed the first ball of a medium swing bowler but if gave me a good idea for what it was doing.

Second ball was bowled on my legs and I tried to clip it down, missed it and then it sounded like it hit a pad and then I heard the bails crash off. I assumed the keeper had taken the bails off but looked up to see the (My team's) Umpire trigger me. The keeper and bowler went up for it.

After the game the keeper told me the ball hit his pad and went back onto the stumps  >:(

I know everyone will say you get the bad ones and its the umpires decision but why didn't the keeper just admit it?

How can you deal with this level, of what I perceive as cheating? I knew the ball didn't bowl me, but as a keeper I would never in a millions years try and cheat someone out the crease. Especially in a friendly!

Stand your ground and enquire as to why the bails went forwards from the stumps rather than back. If umpires and players still insist you were bowled then be on your way.

Not that I count it as cheating, but I haven't walked for nicks behind before. But apart from that I can honestly say I play the game very honestly, I've even called a couple of batters back before when I've been skipper.

A similar thing happened to our team once when our spin bowler bowled someone out, just nicked the top of off and one bail fell off. It was a bit of a subdued cheer as not everyone could see that only one bail had fallen off. The batter just picked it back up and put it back on the stumps and claimed the wind had took it off! Neither umpire would disagree with him as it was a windy day. A brief exchange of some colourful language resulted in the skipper (stood at first slip) taking us off the pitch and eventually the square leg umpire said he thought it had bowled him. The lad then started laughing and said he couldn't believe he nearly got away with it!!

Some people just ruin a 'gentlemen's' game, sounds like that stumper of theirs is one of them.

I would count nicks behind as cheating. As you are out.

The other situation is just woow.

If I nick, then I will walk. I will give my own players out If I believe they are out. If im unsure then benefit of the doubt goes to the batsmen, mine or theirs.

Would you walk if you thought you were run out?

You can only know if you are run out if you are a decent way from the crease. You can't know if it's close. You can certainly think it though. If you've nicked the ball you will feel it and know.

Yes I would walk, If I thought I was out.

No point cheating in a game we all play for a hobby.

Gave a chap out at work yesterday as he was clearly out, delayed my decision admittedly, only due to me looking at him and shaking my head (silly run out, should have made his ground a long time before).

I'm talking about the feathered ones that sometimes I'm not even sure about, if it flies to 1st to slip then I'll definitely walk!

I'm getting my own back for all the times I've middled it into my pads and been given out LBW.

Another situation then, earlier this season a lad played a normal defensive that trickled to me at cover, he was batting out of his crease and as I calmly walked towards the ball (it was the last ball of the over) he watched me for a minute then went off for a trot to tap down the wicket. I calmly picked the ball up and rolled it toward the stumps, as soon as it left my hand, about a yards worth of roll, the umpire called over. The ball hit the stumps without anyone touching it and I appealed. The batter had a right go at me, calling me every name under sun and the umpire just said, I've called over now, I didn't realise you were going for the run out.

Out or not?

I once played a game where our batsman was bowled, or it looked like it.

Keeper was stood up, only off bail off.

They celebrated, our batsmen stood there. Umpire asked why he was waiting, he said "did it bowl me?"

Umpires looked at each other, then said never could say it was bowled so play on.

At tea, our batsmen was asked, what happened. He said "it bowled me, I just wanted the ump to make the decision"

Amusing as it was for our team, but highly controversial, and doubt id be happy if I was the opposition.

Not out if over has been called! We had a similar thing last weekend. I threw the ball in to the keeper, the umpire prematurely called over but the keeper actually missed the ball and it went for 4 overthrows. Not given though as over had been called
