He was waiting on the delivery of some sweat pads that were kindly taken out by the ECB director so perhaps they only just arrived in time

It wouldn't surprise me if he had them, but he's perhaps not got them either to hand (being shown around) or set-up for his head. As there was a rush of wickets, it was quicker and easier to grab the other.

This is again, speculation and depends what he actually wore first.
