Generally there are some very good bats to be found in the academy grade (which is english willow sizes 0-4, the 'alternative willow' you are on about gary is on another model, grown in eastern Europe)

What does it matter if it is 'alternate willow'? Does it ping any differently? If it pings as well as English Willow, I don't care as long as I am not paying the exorbitant English Willow prices.

Kids will outgrow their bats so quickly anyway, it seems silly to pay English Willie prices when they'll only use the bat for a season anyway... Wait...
Bats only used for a season, that sounds like most of this forum actually, buy G1+++++ low density English willow kids bats and get them started early!  ;)
