I think a drawn series is a fair result. England’s batsmen improved slightly as the series went on with Burns proving a good selection and should now get a long run opening. Denly seemed to find his feet and got better and better as series went on without making a Ton but certainly has played his part in our 2 test wins this series. Stokes was superb just seems to be getting a bit injury prone in the bowling department.
Broad, Archer and Leech did superb jobs and other bowling options did there job ok.

As for Australia smith was just world class, can’t stand the bloke really but with a bat in hand he is far and away a great of the same. Wade big or nothing and labu (however you spell his name) did very well a bit like Denly without the big score he probably deserved. Rest of Aussie batters just shocking, Paine as captain well jury well and truly out on that, as a batsmen no where near good enough at this level but keeping is tidy enough.
Cummins & Hazelwood again world class and well supported. Lyon started well but did nothing really except a few handy lower end batting partnerships.

Interesting to see the squads for both sides next series. Personally as has been said a couple of small changes for me. Bairstow dropped and either stick Butler with the gloves and play a middle order batter (pope or Northeast) or drop bairstow and Butler for Foakes and another middle order batsmen (NOT ANOTHER ALLROUNDER)

Interesting that you suggest dropping Buttler. Since his return to the team last year he's the 2nd highest run scorer(just 15 runs behind Root) with the fourth highest average(Behind Stokes, Foakes and Cook).

Sibley, Burns, Denly, Root, Stokes, Pope, Buttler(WK), Archer, Leach, Broad, Anderson or
Denly, Burns, Root, Stokes, Buttler, Pope, Foakes(WK), Archer, Leach, Broad, Anderson

Would be the teams I'd like to see for the winter, obviously relying on Anderson and Stokes being fully fit to bowl. Although it does give the team quite a long tail it's the best bowling line up we have to bowl teams out and win games of cricket. I suppose Ali might be able to squeeze in ahead of Leach if he finds some red ball form.

Well summed up, interesting some of the commentators I was listening to today had butler keeping for the winter(a few of us want Foakes but that prob won't happen) and Bairstow out making a spot at number 5 or 6 for a specialist bat.

It's tricky, isn't it? There is probably only space for one of Bairstow, Buttler and Foakes in a balanced side, unless Bairstow hypothetically returns to three which won't be happening.

Foakes is the best keeper, followed by his shadow, but there seems to be a suspicion that top level quicks will work him out. If he's not a consideration, you're choosing between the specialist bat, Bairstow, who is now much the better glove man, and the specialist keeper, Buttler, who may not be the better bat per se but might add more.

Not a choice anyone can win at.

I can't see England making any substantial changes in the short term because:

1. This side isn't nearly as bad as some have made out.  Australia retained the Ashes on the back of one of the best individual series performances in the history of the game from Steve Smith and being saved by the rain at Lord's.
2. The isn't a large pool of players in the CC putting forward in inarguable case that they are better than what is currently there.

The one obvious change for me is to drop Bairstow with Butler taking the gloves at 7 and Pope coming in at 5/6.  Denly and Burns have done enough to warrant more time although both averaging high 20s will need to be improved on.  I would have root at 4 and Sibley in to open.

Bairstow should be axed. Not even up for debate. Pathetic with the bat averaging 20 suggests he's more a tailender than a batsman. Buttler as the keeper. Pope at 6 - boys averaging 60 in FC and he's a not a crybaby like Bairstow

Foakes was man of the series and highest run scorer on his last tour and was dropped. I would suggest dropping Butler for a better balanced side and no other reason. Of course that relies on someone coming in and doing better than he has but as you pointed out one of those 3 whom have a better batting average is the best wicket keeper in the country so in someways that’s answers the choice. However we all know that won’t happen in all probability as YJB must have some serious dirt on someone to have kept his place. Not just for his below par performances but also for the way he handled the whole Foakes situation and his public outburst.

Disappointing way to end the series for Aus,  the only thing they got right in that test was the selection of Marsh. 3 things that really stood out to me were the decision to bowl first, after backing themselves to bat first in far worse conditions through the tour, the selection of Peter Siddle after Starc played pretty well in the last test and gives Lyon footmarks to bowl into and just looks like he gels with hazelwood and Lyon better, and the retention or David Warner, there are some form slumps that can't be turned around, and Stuart Broad has become a specialist left hand remover, atleast Bancroft hung around a little bit, and Joe burns would be sitting at home shaking his head wondering how he was left out of the picture.

But the urn is coming home, and it has been an interesting series to watch, but I really am looking forward to a far healthier sleep routine!

How is Jofra man of the match, based on the first innings alone?!
It should have been Leach!

Marsh took more wickets than both of them, and made one less run than both of them put together!  M.O.M sometimes leaves me scratching my head..........

I think Paine was very good behind the stumps, but really had an ordinary series as captain.  His record on reviews was terrible at best.  Flipping a coin would give a better success rate!
I remember at the toss of the first test, when electing to bat he said something like "I'd rather be batting here on day one, than on day five", so its very hard to fathom why he chose to field in test#5, but perhaps it reflected his confidence in his openers!

There was a stat on the TV commentary where (I think) they said that it was the second lowest ever test average opening partnership across the summer (including AUS/ENG/IRE).  The bowling certainly was first class, and most top order batsmen were made to look second rate.

Pretty easy to be armchair experts with the beauty of hindsight. Any amount of "if's and buts" would have changed the series, but it's all in the history books now.

Autralias highest opening partnership was 18

England's was 50 odd (we also had a 27 wooo!

the partnerahips for those were harris/warner and Burns/Denly

Id say on purely individual scores englands openers far outperformed autralias and thats including roy!!!

Australias 3/4 pair were miles ahead though

Congratulation to England for winning the test and Aussies in retain The Ashes.

The tests were played between two evenly matched bowling teams with flawed batting.  There were some brilliant individual performance on both side.

Paine, needs to be better at reviews and he has come out and said he sucks at it and needs to improve.  As for batting, he might have seen the green and decided to bowl first.  I think the primary reason that Aus lost is not the bowling first but fielding and batting.  I think they had close to 6 or 7 dropped catches in the first innings and couple more in the second.  In the 5th test both Smith and Marnus (sorry cannot seem to spell Marnus's last name) had a bad innings but non of the other batsmen were able to string a partnership together.

For me the biggest disappointment was the Aussie opening pair, they barely lasted the first 10 over the whole series with both of them back in the pavilion.  At least England had one opener who got decent scores after Roy was dropped/moved to lower order.

Yes the replays of some old matches have been great. Presuming the test team plays in June or maybe July thru September how does the forum see the side developing?

I mention this because slightly surprisingly Moeen today says he is available for tests..
With Giles,Silverwood and Root all saying they want him back over the last year how,if at all, does he fit in?

Waiting to come back in also
Burns
Anderson

Burns Anderson and archer will all come back in
Burns at the top with Sibley, Crawley or denly to miss out on the 3 spot

Anderson for woakes archer and wood to rotate

For me mo needs to earn his spot, leach and bess have earnt the chance to fight for the spinner spot and deserve it moving forward
