All over now changed my view slightly this test did matter but the ashes are gone for another two years.

The Aussies I think deserved to retain the urn with a better bowling attack (just about) and the phenomenal Smith who won over a lot of the crowds here.

I hope England can move forward by having slightly less allrounders and squeeze in some young batsmen.

And broad proved the doubters wrong!  :)

Scarily.......

Had we not had rain in the drawn test match, we would have gone on to win that and won 3-2........

This side will think there doing alright at test cricket and carry on regardless. Doh.

England won and tied the series, they'll be declared class again soon!

Just waiting for someone to claim they'd have won the Ashes if it hadn't rained at Lord's...

Fair result, really and both teams got what they deserved over the English summer. They'll both rue chances to have put the games at Edgbaston at 122-8 and Headingley with 1 wicket to win away.

Looking forward to a bit of an overhaul to address the balance between test and LOI sides as well as a few players here and there being moved on.

I think a drawn series is a fair result. England’s batsmen improved slightly as the series went on with Burns proving a good selection and should now get a long run opening. Denly seemed to find his feet and got better and better as series went on without making a Ton but certainly has played his part in our 2 test wins this series. Stokes was superb just seems to be getting a bit injury prone in the bowling department.
Broad, Archer and Leech did superb jobs and other bowling options did there job ok.

As for Australia smith was just world class, can’t stand the bloke really but with a bat in hand he is far and away a great of the same. Wade big or nothing and labu (however you spell his name) did very well a bit like Denly without the big score he probably deserved. Rest of Aussie batters just shocking, Paine as captain well jury well and truly out on that, as a batsmen no where near good enough at this level but keeping is tidy enough.
Cummins & Hazelwood again world class and well supported. Lyon started well but did nothing really except a few handy lower end batting partnerships.

Interesting to see the squads for both sides next series. Personally as has been said a couple of small changes for me. Bairstow dropped and either stick Butler with the gloves and play a middle order batter (pope or Northeast) or drop bairstow and Butler for Foakes and another middle order batsmen (NOT ANOTHER ALLROUNDER)

Well summed up, interesting some of the commentators I was listening to today had butler keeping for the winter(a few of us want Foakes but that prob won't happen) and Bairstow out making a spot at number 5 or 6 for a specialist bat.

The point being made was its easier to start someone in the middle order to help adjust to the higher level.

Hugely agree with this and I think Northeast is a high class player but the most talented young batsman in the country is Pope by quite a long way.

Specialist opener yes we still need but there does not need to be big changes. I think Roy probably should give way unfortunately not everyone can bat 5- we got to stick with the best young player.

Denly at 3 for me helps the side, has experience and I think Root will revert to 4 where he wants to bat.

Interesting, isn't it? I suspect those talking about Lords are semi joking, but it's not daft to say England were 90 minutes less rain from the Ashes. Yet no one could credibly dispute that Australia were the dominant side.

I'm genuinely not sure what to make of that fact. Was it as simple as that Smith was the difference? I don't think it's that simple, because there were other exceptional performances, not least from Pat Cummins, who bowled longer and better than a man with his injury history has any right to.

Ho hum.

So, England. Lots of questions for the new coach to resolve, first of which has to be, what are England trying to achieve. Bayliss was a one day specialist who did well in one day cricket. We need a test man.
