Shin guards

Before the purists/ or the ‘just use your hands’ police get a word in, i field quite close to the square, either in slip, in batsmans eye line or in the firing line at cover/ mid wicket.

Sometimes a ball is so well struck i just stick a leg out to get anything behind the ball.
Its happened a few times and i think its time to invest in some level of protection.

Anyone tried using football or hockey shin pads? If so, any recommendations? Ive seen some fielding pads from CA and Newbery but theyre more for fielding at silly point. I want to protect my legs but still chase the ball to the boundary if needed.

Cheap pair of football shin guards should do the trick as long as you've got a pair of socks holding the bottom of them in place. They're designed to be easy to run in after all.

For many years this was the norm. Don't remember seeing any nasty injuries.

Hockey shin pads would be better than football ones as they are designed for ball on leg impact.

Went down to stop a ball with my hand but it bobbled and smacked into my shin. That got infected and had to be drained. Wanting to avoid the same again I managed to pick up some Stretton shin pads from ebay. Not seen them anywhere else; said to have belonged to a female pro.

Quality as you'd expect, but overkill for my level of cricket. Helped me get back into wanting the ball to come in my direction again though.

Did some R&D with @Sivlar13 on these as an alternative to the Newbery/CA type pads mentioned earlier. These are designed for mountain biking but we looked at more robust options to insert into the pockets.
