Purpose of Big Edges and High Spine
« on: March 08, 2011, 08:47:10 PM »

As the title says, what is the purpose of big edges and high spine? What is good about having them in a bat ?

High spine more power behind the middle, big edges more forgiving for shots not middled.

Thats my understanding in basic terms if that helps

A high spine gives stiffness and volume of willow behind the middle and maximises power. Big edges create a larger sweet spot. To have both inside your weight range is nirvana, however sometimes this is performed by creating a plank with a shark fin....

Pro's tend to have these bats as they get the cream of the willow, harder for us mortals to achieve.

Mike I have Powerbow 3 Star and this bat has no spine (I would say that) and thin edges but it is better than 41 mm edge bat I have.

Why is that ?

If we look at number if bat a has 50 mm spine and bat b has 70 mm spine will the ball with bat b go further than bat a ? (Everything else is exactly same)

No 2 pieces of willow are ever the same, no matter if the willow was twin clefts as they might have dried differently or have knots internally.

It is an impossible question that you ask, for 2 bats to be identical yet have a major difference is impossible. If they weighed the same with the 2 differing shapes then either the density is the same and the shape having a higher spine would lose willow elsewhere or if the higher spine was merely bigger and the same weight it would have low density willow and in theory be better due to that factor. I would say that a higher spine would give a better but smaller middle than a lower spine.

If you look at the GN Scoop it has broken records with no spine....

I guess the amount of concaving will come into it as well. If you scoop out the middle less weight is hitting the ball - I guess the Powerbow has little or no concaving?

Uknsaunders, Powerbow has no concaving mate.

Mike thanks mate, I know it is not possible to have two of the same bats but it was just an analogy.

I have understood that a higher spine bat means powerful strokes.

If there is small difference between edge sizes let's say 5mm does that make a difference to sweetspot length ?

I'd say the best shape is one that suits your game best, are you pin point driving the ball through the outfield or slapping every ball all over the place, yes it is simplistic but it is easy to answer... the high spine/thin edge would be better for precision as in theory you would be hitting the middle of the bat more, slapper!!! go for thicker edges which reduce the rotation and increase the value of mistimed shots...

Cheers make sense.

As a front foot player do you think thicker edge (38 mm) along high spine (68mm) going to be ideal ?

Thanks mate, appreciate it

I have no idea to be quite honest, you are by far the best person to judge what will work for you, if not then whoever is making/selling you a bat will be able to help.
