Xiphos 500
« on: March 21, 2011, 12:28:10 PM »

Well, heres my second review EVER! Is an ever so slightly strange mood tonight so hopefully you guys can bare with me...  ;)

Ok so Gray nicolls..
They have produced some lovely bats and some not so lovely bats. The lovely tending to be slightly older, such as a scoop owned by my cousin and my Rapier. The bad being well... My Xiphos. Now when i say bad, i dont mean its horrible. It isnt. Infact i used to think quite highly of it until i received my H4L from Matt which quite frankly, makes the Xiphos look like plank.

Anywho, the Xiphos weighs in at 2.8 with about 31mm edges which is actualy not bad! Its the 2009 model i do beleave and its got no concave but instead those 'cut outs' on the backwhich are about 8cms deep and run about  28cms along the back. The willow isnt the prittyest. There are about 6 grains that are a bit wobbly! There are a few imperfections on the blade but you can see them in the pictures! Now the moddle.. Well if you hit the middle (which isnt exacly massive) it goes realy quite well but anywere elce isnt that great.

Anyway so in summery, its not a terrible bat! It saw me through my first year and a half of cricket which i guess isnt to bad...

Pictures!

I had a 3lber (there are pics somewhere, and it was a Pro Performance). I didn't knock it in properly and caused some cracking low ont he blade, but it went like the clappers. Didn't have large edges, but passed it on to a club as it is too heavy. Mine wasa nice bat.

I have seen pictures of that! Used it in a tour (or ment to) of the carribean or something from memory? At 3Lbs you would want it to! But yeah i mean obviously not all Xiphoses are awesome. If they were all crap then the wouldnt sell it i guess... I actualy would love to use that bat! The 3lber, it did look to have a rather large spine!

And there is the problem. $250 Aus isn't a mile away from the price of a new H4L, yet the GN is nowhere near their top model. I believe GN can and do produce bats that go as well as H4L etc but the problem is you have to spend nearly twice as much. It's all down to running costs, covering sponsorship deals etc.

Toby, this one:

The best bit was that I paid £120 for it as it was priced up incorrectly in Decathlon.

I do enjoy these pictures! Wow realy? Thats a steal! And exacly jonpinson! I think the only reason that they actualy sell these products is because of the endorsment! And also because no one has realy hurd of these smaller custom made companys which frankly, make a better product!

You appear to have used the Edge more than the middle :p

I have an Xiphos at the moment and love it, although I haven't tried any small companies bats so can't compare it to them.

I don't use the edges... That's always the people who borrow the bat ;)
