Oil before Hammer Edge - whats the consensus?
« on: March 21, 2011, 08:44:15 PM »

Hello Chaps,

Was gonna bung a hammer edge on the new SS, but can't remember if I should give it a coat of oil or not before hand?

Should it be:

Oil
Let it dry
Bung on Harry Hammers
Knock it in?

Oil, knock-in, hammer edge.

My normal routine.

no - the anti scuff will keep the moisture in. Only apply to the toe where no anti-scuff exists. Chris from Kippax told me that.

I'm assuming the hammer edge covers the whole face of the bat?

If you have time then oil, leave for 3 days. Again oil leave for 3 days. Knock it in, then light sand and then apply the scuff sheet

Technically oil keeps the bat at it's moisture content. It shouldn't' be used to add moisture as it will loosen the fibres. So therefore if putting scuff you don't need to oil.  Just oil the rest of it or at the end of season. That all said doesn't make a huge difference if you oil it and the put scuff on if it has dried

what about bat wax? Oil, then bat wax and scuff sheet or no oil at all? Is bat wax just a substitute for oil?

Think its a case of either or to be fair, ive done both and had no problems either way however a little oil first let it dry fully for a week then the scuff sheet and then some oil to the toe and the back of the bat but i only use small amounts.

Bat wax is simply linseed oil in a solid state so use one or the other rather than both.

Doesn't the oil also help soften the surface, so the fibres enmesh better during knocking?

I find the edges are less likely to crack if the blade is oiled first

pointless to create new topic, i sanded down a bat on monday night, and have got some salix bat wax and an anti scuff sheet... what im thinking of doing is applying the scuff sheet and then giving the rest of the bat a fine layer of wax, is that how the bat makers would do it? or just apply the scuff with no oil or wax?

Treat the wax as though it were oil. Then reread the thread to see what people think!

i like to be 100% sure before i do anything with my bats, so i am asking in plain terms for an answer. just a touch confused that if we are so worried about the bat drying out, why would a scuff sheet stop it doing so (only covering some of the full surface area of the bat as it does) surely the exposed areas of the bat would release the moisture content over time, just as the face would unscuffed/unoiled. cant see an obvious answer to my question in the post so far so thats why i have asked. to oil rest of bat or not to oil rest of bat?
