Knee problems
« on: April 06, 2011, 10:47:50 AM »

Yesterday i was playing a school football match and in the last few seconds of the game i tried to tackle someone, i turned and some how twisted my knee. i herd a popping noise as i fell. i couldn't walk for a good 5 mins. when i got home i had a bath then put ice on it for a good 3 hours on and off. ive also kept my leg on top of a few cushions so its elevated. being so close to the start of the season i dont want to miss it! Im only 15 and this is the first time ive had any problems with my knee. can anyone help me!?

Definitely seek medical help.  Sounds ligament-y to me.

Best go to the docs as knees are funny things it could be nothing but could be something better safe than sorry from my experience

sounds a lot like ruptured ligament damage to me. I have done this to both my ankle and knee. Do all the 'RICE' stuff and don't be tempted to rush back. If you have to miss the first 6 game or whatever then do it. Even if you think you'll be fine you really won't be, and could be doing long term injuries to yourself.

If it is ligament damage, do you know how long i could be out of action for?

How long is a piece of string?  Could be anywhere from a few days to months, depending on how bad it is, and which ligament you have done.  As others have said though, may just be nothing.

With my ankle I was out for 8 weeks. Couldn't walk for 2 of those. With my knee I couldn't walk for a week, and I was back playing after 4, so it really does depend. If I was you I would just go and visit either your GP, or more preferably just nip into A&E and they will sort you out straight away. To be fair if you can walk without discomfort then it won't be too bad. But then again I haven't undergone 10 years of medical education!

I'd get to A and E if you can. Chances are the GP would just refer you to the hospital for a scan which means back of the waiting list.

I would get yourself to A and E too - just pack a good book. Much better to be safe than sorry and to get it looked at ASAP.

It sounds like what I did a couple of seasons ago playing football, also involving a tackle.

I didn't think much of it straight away, but I got up and I could hardly walk as below the knee felt like jelly. It didn't hurt that much, just had no real feeling of below the knee.

I had stretched the Inner ligaments that go alongside the knee (cant remember the medical name for it) and there isnt much you can do for it. I was told to take anti inflammatories, ice and rest. Once doing that for a week and half or so I started doing exercises on it, luckily I had some latex strips which I had previously used from a previous knee injury and used those as a resistance band.

However I would visit your doctor about it, I wouldn't go to A&E as there isn't much they can do about it and your doctor would give you more time to diagnose the problem.
