Why or what got you into cricket and iconic moments..
« on: April 13, 2011, 12:21:01 PM »

I started playing cricket after watching Chris Broad mangle the Aussie up in the Ashes as a 6 year old my grandpa loved watching cricket and took me to watch i was hooked

My iconic moment was Worcestershire side in 89
in First-Class matches for Worcestershire in 1989:
P Bent; SR Bevins; IT Botham; TS Curtis; GR Dilley; DB D'Oliveira; GA Hick; RK Illingworth; SR Lampitt; DA Leatherdale; GJ Lord; SM McEwan; PA Neale; PJ Newport; SJ O'Shaughnessy; AP Pridgeon; NV Radford; SJ Rhodes; CM Tolley; MJ Weston.

What as side i guess it was my love of DF bats which 99 per cent of them used.

Meet and played against Steve O'Shaughnessy when he was pro at Denton had a good chat..

Sorry if this topic is boring but wht did you get into cricket and what iconic moments made you love the game

I would say my general 'sportyness' got me into cricket first of all, from then on I just got in the game more and more. Really enjoyed it because I used to open the batting and bowling, my old man wasn't hugely involved in the game as he was more of a football man but I used to love watching Darren Gough sprinting in and giving it his all for England when I was growing up.

I did not start playing till 16 but always watched it with dad so got into it that way

Iconic was watching Lara score his 501 for the mighty bears after being dropped on 37 by the keeper who said " I bet he will get a ton now "

I live on the boundary of my cricket club and they placed an advert in a local newspaper about them starting an under 11s team, so I had a go and I've been playing ever since.

And I haven't got any specific cricketing iconic moment, but my cricket-related iconic moment is watching Ian Harvey in full flow at the bar after he pro'd for us. IIrc he was downing Cheeky Vs

I started playing when my grandpa use to bowl to me in the garden for hours, then started playing matches when i went to prep school at 7, and the love for the game was sealed in 1990 when India visited England, and Graham Gooch flogged them all over Lords.  My first visit to a Test match was that summer to Old Trafford (all 5 days), where Athers scored a ton, Azharuddin stroked his way to a majestic 150+, and a cherubic Tendulkar struck his first Test hundred.  From then on I was hooked.

Certainly a great first Test to go to - it was probably another 5 or 6 year before I went to a Test again - partly down to how much cricket I played from that point on, but have incredible memories from that time.

i will be the only person who cites the 2003 home test series against new zealand as the reason i fell in love with the game! On paper, an unremarkable series, but coming home from school and finding sport on the tele (channel 4 at the time) was great, i would sit and watch as mark richardson absorbed maiden after maiden, thinking 'this should be really boring, but im actually quite intrigued'. My grandad was a big lover of the game and he would play with me in the garden. I followed it through the south africa series where graeme smith made 200 and 170 and then the 2005 ashes which captivated me even more than before. Iconic moment would have to be kevin pietersen flaying warne and mcgrath 10 rows back and the umpires taking the bails off to signal the win.

probably a few in the same boat as me, as a 11/12 year old watching the 2005 ashes, got me hooked. Have loved the game ever since.

My dad. He was opening bowler and batsman for his team and we used to go along and watch. As I got older he got me playing in the garden, and three rest is history.

The result? I'm a better bowler and now I'm learning to bat.....
