Are you referring to Chris Read? He has played for England. Would it be "ludicrous" if Ramprakash were selected despite not currently being in the England set up?

Yes I am. "Has" being the key word there. If he were named cricketer of the year when at least playing international cricket then he would have a case. I'm a massive fan of Ramprakash but yes, it would be ludicrous if he were selected, firstly because he does not play international cricket any more, and secondly because he is playing in Division 2 of the county championship. So not even the highest level of domestic cricket.

I can see I have touched on a nerve here. I will not disagree with you regarding his being the "best gloveman in the country". However, as shown by the fact that he is not playing for england - there is more to being a wicket-keeper than the keeping aspect. You have to be at least a good International batsman as well.

He is a consistent performer for Notts year in year out yes but, If he were a world class cricketer he would have played a lot less for Notts and a lot more for England. He deserves credit but why should he be given credit at the expense of those who represent their countries and perform at the highest level against opponents of the highest level.

The award is for "Cricketer" of the year, Chris Read may be "gloveman of the year" but can hardly be said to be "Cricketer of the year" when he is not a rounded enough cricketer to play international cricket.

The award is Wisden cricketers of the year which has no reference to international cricket the ICC have awards for that. Wisden credit those who perform well in any level of the professional game which is fair in my opinion.  Chris Read is a genuine gentleman of the game who if you look up stats as I've mentioned has performed year in year our for Notts and carried them whilst doing a good job with the captaincy and led them to the highest honour in the English county game the Division 1 county championship therefore justifying him as ONE of the players of the year. As for international cricket he is more than capable and if given half the chances other keepers have had would have shown his true potential.

the point about the 5 cricketers of the year are that they are 5 players who have had an impact on the English summer and you can only win the award once.

I think only giving 4 this year is a nice touch.

As for Chris Read - I think he is totally diservice of the accolade - he had a brilliant year as captain, keeper and batsman of the pennent winning team and made tough decisions under pressure, not least one on the last day to go for bonus points rather than a daft "fixed" match.

Wisden is an extraordinary institution and there is typically one county player in the 5. I was more surprised at Eion Morgan's selection, as it is only for his one day rather form more than anything else. Personally I would have given it to Shane Watson who was in England for the Summer and played really well. (not sure if he has won it before though?)

As for Sachin as leading cricketer of the year. HE IS A MACHINE.

I agree, but for me, watson and trott should be in there over iqbal and laxman

I think 15 tests is definitely a decent chance, and 360 runs at 18 or so is definitely not taking that chance and proving himself as more than capable. The same can be said of 36 ODI's with 300 runs at 17ish. Given chances and failed to make the most of them.
For me he is a very good county player but not a rounded enough player to cope at the top level. It's all very well being a brilliant keeper, but you need to be able to score runs too.

I was a little surprised by Morgans inclusion but I think it highlights the general increase of focus on the limited overs game in general in recent years.

I agree his stats aren't great however how many of his tests and odis did he play in a row is what I am getting at, he was drafted in and out of the side with little or no run of games meaning pressure on his was always high. Given a decent run like the likes of Prior, Jones etc and he would have come good in my opinion. And I've explained how he has earned his inclusion as has buzz so I dont need to say that again. I think your behind very harsh on someone who deserves all the credit he is given.

Because they are not awards given to the 'best players', but the players who have had the biggest impact on English cricket. By captaining the champion team last year Read had more impact on English cricket that many others who may be called 'better'.

Read was and is still in the top 2 keepers in our country and i would put him in possibly the top 5 keepers in the world unless there some good keepers out there i have not seen or heard of.

Ah, I didn't realise It was just their "influence on the previous English Season", I thought, for some reason, that it was on cricket worldwide which it was between 2000-03 according to Wikipedia, but no longer - That is the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World Award apparently.

This brings a question to mind though - What impact has Tamim Iqbal had on the English season? Are his performances during Bangladesh's tour here enough to mean he deserves this award? Personally I am unsure, and rather than continue to waffle on I will leave you chaps to discuss for a bit
