Count out the aussies at your peril, the Australian domestic system is the strongest domestic cricket in the world it will never fail to produce players capable of producing the goods at the top level, there's class players in the side at the moment, they will always be there or thereabouts.

They seem to churning out some good batsmen but the bowling is what is letting them down.

With Bret Lee, Shane Watson out of the WI tour. Aussies are going to have a tough time there too.

Aura, once lost very hard to regain.

Liverpool, Football.
Bath, Rugby

Both only just regaining some of that lost aura even though they have both won their European cups between being at their peak and now. I'd think Australia would be the same, will never sink as low as the West Indies but will take some time to be No 1 again and may not get it back ever.

I think to say that australia will not get back to the top of the cricket rankings ever is a very narrow point of view. We are going backwards. We are no 3 now in the world behind india. SA are currently world no1s.

Hang on. Two bad series and we are past it? Sure we've lost some legends in the past few years. We've still got ponting, hayden (even though hes in shocking from), michael clarke, stuart clark, andrew symonds, katich, hussey and johnson. Haddin is a great keeper and is a destructive batter as anyone. Shaun Marsh is a batsman for the future. Phil Jaques is still there but he's injured. Shane watson is one of the best allrounders in world cricket when he is fit. Also we have numerous bowlers that could come through at anytime and do a job. Peter Siddle is promising and a few more season around the national set up and he will be great. Ben hilfenhaus and doug bollinger are swing bowlers that can trouble any batsman and they are still in theri early to mid 20's. Ashley noffke is possibly the best player not to have played a test and although he is injured. If any middle order batsman get injured or are unavailable we have brad hodge who has a test double hundred against south africa. Also david hussey, luke ronchi and michael klinger who has been tearing up the domestic season this year.

Also India will have a rebuilding phase soon. Tendulkar is still batting well but i feel injury will start to take hold of him sooner or later. Rahul dravid is getting on. Laxman is also the wrong side of 30. Those names will be as hard to replace as some players australia is replacing at the moment.

So its not all doom and gloom.

I can see the Aussies struggling for a while but once their quality youngesters such as Johnson mature there will be no stopping them again for another 10 years!

"The average age of our first-class teams is around 27, and that's a major problem. Some players are still earning nearly �50,000 playing for state sides at 31 and will never play for Australia"

The Aussies have got some young players with a lot of talent coming through but you need more than talent to succeed. Also they need to start picking some of the youngsters.

to say we are now second fiddle is outrageous. we have good individual cricketers.
south africa work well as a unit but take away Smith, they would have lost as soon as they got into perth.

he was man of the series for a reason: that reason is he is a brilliant cricketer, an even better captain and has the respect of the players.

ponting is great but smith was just greater
